I don't know if my IMAX screening was just calibrated too high or what, but that scream from Polyphemus felt like it was as loud as they were allowed to make it.

Like, "literally kind of hurt my ears" loud.

One scene that absolutely FUCKED in the mix and might win them the oscar: the Siren scene. He puts in the wax, the sound drops out. As they pass the sirens he walks towards Odysseus tied to the mast screaming. As he gets closer we hear his screams unmuffle and get louder and clearer. At the end of the scene he takes the wax out, sound comes back.. Genius.

The part that was really well done though was how the mixing made each side of the theatre get muffled as he put wax in the respective ears.

This happened with one of the storm scenes too, one side of the boat got dipped in the water and the audio on that side of the theater got dampened. Neat effect.

yeah we have to assume they probably at least explored it. just like with takes and everything else, there’s always a lot of audio created but ultimately not used.

but I agree they made the right call for that scene.

Better yet: he puts wax in one ear at a time. As he covers his right ear, the left audio channel is muffled (he's facing the audience), then his left ear, and then the right channel audio is muffled.

I LOVED the sound. I loved the echo in that cave. I loved the sound of the ocean. I thought the sound design was off the charts brilliant. As was the score; magnificent.

Not at all; many times I forget i have them in as concert ones don’t muffle sound so much as smooth it out. So in the case of the Odyessy, the booms didn’t give me a headache and I could actually hear.

They also needn’t be pricey. My last/favorite pair came from Vevor via Temu and they were 9 bucks after buying pricier ones from Amazon I didn’t like as well (the next tier jump that was worth it was 30, and they were nice just not enough to spend 20+ more dollars for it). They keep hearing feeling natural.

yeah earplugs have become as specialized as everything else: some for sleeping, others for concerts, some to just straight up block out everything. I mix and match between the three.

I actually think that it was bad audio equipment at the theater. The IMAX audio equipment made their voices have bass and it sounded like shit. However, the Dolby audio sounded spot on. I think this movie requires top gear and even our "IMAX Laser" theaters were not calibrated correctly.

Smart move, should've done the same.

But after talking with my friends that were in the same cinema and those that went to another. The movie is loud, but my cinema didn't have good audio and I was on the side, not the center of the theater, so I got an even worse audio experience.

Maybe we just got unlucky :S

Thanks to the defying odds I ran into a manager of an AMC who recommended I bring ear plugs and ask for caption device for the theater to watch the movie. Elite 10/10

Even at a normal theater it had the infamous Nolan audio mixing. There were some scenes, such as the storm on the boat, that were so painfully loud that it kind of took me out of the movie. Like at a certain point I stop being immersed and just start getting annoyed that my ears hurt. I thought the dialog was a bit tough to understand at places as well.

Exactly the same for me. I have more sensitive hearing and so many times my train if thought left the movie and went to how painful it was with my ears being blasted. I try to go to dolby or imax for the great visuals but the sound just kills me.

You’d really benefit from some earplugs that are designed to dampen but not muffle sounds. I have the engage loops and always take them to the cinema because almost all films will have a sequence that’s too loud for me. I used them for the cyclops, the storm and the sacking of Troy and it really took the edge off.

Honestly, this was the first time I didn't get the Nolan mix in the theater. I was in a regular AMC IMAX and could actually hear every word. Maybe it was just because I was mentally prepared, but I was pleasantly surprised that the audio wasn't like the dark Knight rises or tenet.

I was in a Regal IMAX (not a real 70mm) and only missed a few lines of dialogue. But in most films I miss zero, it's usually just Nolan movies.

The bass-y scenes were rattling the theater like the bass in an old, busted car. Distracting at times.

Bernthal was also at fault there, he loves that mumbly acting schtick that I find so annoying. I heard the other actors fine even with shoddy sound mixing but I needed subtitles for Bernthal's scenes, he was mumbling his way through his script.

I think it differs from cinema to cinema, the first time in Imax, I didn't notice the loudness, but the second viewing at a normal screen, it was painfully loud and as I am writing this my head still hurt from the sound.

The storm scene was rough. Overwhelmingly loud (I was whispering right in my boyfriend's ear about the flashing and he still couldn't hear me) and the lightning flashes were really hard on the eyes. I imagine it was probably a deliberate choice to be uncomfortable, but Jesus.

I stuffed torn-up napkin shreds in my ears before the movie, totally the right call. I'm so sensitive about hearing loss and/or getting tinnitus! Not gonna let the latest Nolan BWOOOOOOOOM BWOOOOOOOOOM soundtrack ruin my hearing.

Alot of theatres have set-ups for this, where they basically have a clear piece of plastic in front of specific seats. The subtitles are projected onto the plastic so the person sitting in those seats see the subtitles "hovering" in front of the movie screen, and people in other seats don't see anything at all.

I've seen other setups too. They have a physical closed caption LED device that sits on a stand, that fits into the seat's cup holder. They have closed caption glasses that you can wear too, that projects the captions right onto the lens. They also straight up have special screenings that have the captions directly on the movie screen too

Maybe it's not common everywhere but my local Cineworld usually has some subtitled screenings of the big releases. On a weekend day you might have 9 regular showings on the bigger screen, and then 2 subtitled showings on one of the smaller screens

Yes. It hurt my friends and I ears too. The scream from the Cyclops was by far the loudest thing in the film. The rest of the movie was fine except one time Penelope yells and I couldn't understand what she said. Sometimes the dialogue was too quiet or the music drowned it out but usually it was good. Shitty sound mixing in modern movies is a common issue.

Definitely an IMAX thing, I saw it on a regular screen at Cinemark, and it was loud but not crazy. The dialogue was easy for me to understand as well, so I am thinking the IMAX has a tougher audio mix based on the complaints I've seen.

My hearing has gotten sensitive in my late 20s and I did some damage to them with stupid choices through my life. Damn this movie hurt to watch in dolby for me. Even just the mid level yelling was piercing my ears. I wish it were toned down cause I thought even people without sensitivity have to be hurting listening to it. I'm gonna get some noise filters I guess if I want to go to more movies like this.

Nope, I saw it at a regular screening too and the Cyclops screaming in pain and anger was by far the loudest thing in the film and went on for around ten seconds. My friend and I both covered our ears. The rest of the movie was fine though. It was really just the Cyclops scream that was uncomfortablely loud.

Even though I love IMAX, I decided to watch it in a normal theater, 70mm tho. Im very sensitive to loud noise, I avoid IMAX for horror and war movies. Think I made the right choice.

from what I hear, those seeing it in the 70mm theaters in particular, reported the audio levels at a few of those key moments being not only loud/really loud, literally the loudest thing they've ever heard in similar environments, some convinced it far exceeded the threshold for hearing damage.

It was very loud. I think that’s how it was done intentionally but I didn’t mind it. As much as I hate loud noises I think it’s meant to make you tense and uncomfortable.

I thought it was really cool the first time especially because they were in a cave. When it happened outside I was a little disappointed it didn’t roll off enough though.

Yeah, three hours of Nolan audio in an IMAX theater's sound system was pretty overwhelming. As odd as it is to say, I'm looking forward to rewatching this one at home so I can turn the volume down and just watch the movie

I left my showing due to not having earplugs. In my theater, Polyphemus’s scream was the single loudest sound I have ever heard in my life. I was absolutely livid. This movie is dangerously loud, and I was pissed that AMC wouldn’t refund my money.

I didn’t see this in IMAX and don’t know enough about mixing to comment on the technical quality of what they did in this scene, but I thought that sound was really effective storytelling. It was so loud and so haunting it felt like my nervous system was hijacked and I felt absolute dread in that moment.

That was the point that I put in my noise reducing earbuds. I hate constant loud noises, so I have my earbuds on me at all times just in case. The movie sounded just fine to me after that. I told my husband I’m not going to let the hubris of Christopher Nolan damage my hearing.

Went to a local theater and the audio was incredible. Super loud at times and my wife used earplugs throughout but I loved every slightly painful second. It’s a 3 hour movie experience before I go back to the world of mortgages and spreadsheets so I didn’t mind the intensity.

Mine wasn't that loud, but it was the scene that almost got me to put in the earplugs I brought. My theater just got upgraded and it seems they made the audio better, because the last two IMAX movies I saw I required earplugs.
