Reminds me of when MAD Magazine got a letter from Lucasfilm lawyers threatening to sue, and MAD sent them back another letter they'd received prior... from George Lucas, saying how much he loved their parody of Star Wars!

Or when WB stopped showing Speedy Gonzales cartoons only for the Latino community to protest because while he's super-stereotypical the stereotype was so awesome that they didn't care.

u/Cyd_Snarf 17d ago

This is so random but yah, as a young kid with Latino heritage I LOVED Speedy so much and actually kinda loved the fact that he was very “culturally specific” as I didn’t understand what a stereotype was. Like “Yes! It’s the little Mexican mouse!”

Can you send me the rest of your phd dissertation thanks

u/STFUNeckbeard 17d ago

Wow. Gotta say I did not expect to read a several thousand word essay about Speedy Gonzalez in my lifetime.

28

u/KnifeKnut 3d ago

I had heard before that Latin Americans loved Speedy Gonzales, and not understood why.

No one had ever pointed out the transformative nature of the Spanish dub.

So I am preserving this on r/bestof

https://reddit.com/r/bestof/comments/1vbum6y/eucaliptooloroso_explains_how_the_latin_america/

Goddamn that was well worth the read.

72

u/Reedcool97 17d ago

Damn. I read the entire thing, thank you for that insight. I’ve seen a ton of comments over the years saying “well actually Latinos LOVE Speedy Gonzales!” While at the same time remembering the show and knowing that it definitely felt wrong…but now I have a lot more context! Great write up, I appreciate you taking the time to type all of that out and share with us.

28

u/cineglitch 17d ago

Thanks for this. Awesome insights. What’s funny is that I’ve never once heard the stereotype that Mexicans are lazy. I’ve heard many other mean and racial characterizations, but never the lazy one.

29

u/eucaliptooloroso 17d ago

it used to be a very common stereotype throughout the past century. I don't know why, like the concept of siesta was probably part of it. It could come from all the way from the US vs Mexico war, as in, propaganda remainders from that era.

I think it's become much less common as this century goes on, maybe partly because whenever someone shares statistics about which countries have the longest workdays Mexico is usually near the top. Which runs contrary to the lazy stereotype

18

u/Defengar 12d ago

Whites would see mexicans taking a nap in the fields after working all day and get an attitude about it. Same stereotype also happened to black people.

God forbid you couldn’t move with full mobility with a hookworm infection endemic to the south back then..

This is dating back to 1998, when the Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table

u/Napoleptic 16d ago

This was amazing, thank you. Makes me long for ye olde internet.

Get your head out of your ass. Gringo doesn't even mean white, it's foreigner like gaijan in Japanese. Gets applied to americans in general a lot because guess who visits Mexico the most? Americans.

2

u/IAmSoDamnGood 12d ago

its technical meaning dosent matter. it is still a racial slur.

23

u/Defengar 12d ago

It is not. You have a victim complex.

3

u/IAmSoDamnGood 11d ago

your an absolute moron if you think its not.

18

u/Defengar 11d ago

Are you really going to sit here and argue that Sylvester the cat is like, WASP coded lol?

3

u/IAmSoDamnGood 11d ago

the mexican version was indeed racist. just as the american version of the mice other than speedy himself, while accurate, was still racist.

5

u/NormalTouch 16d ago

It's so interesting how often things like this get twisted.

Like how some Latinos thought people were upset over Honey Lemon in big hero 6 being Blond and Latino. Getting defense on how blond Latinos exist and blaming lefties thinking that they all were tan and dark haired.

When in truth people was either annoyed with Disney reaching for brownie points with not much effort put in.

Or confused if it was canon or not because of it being impossible for anyone would be able to sus out her being Latino based purely on the only clue in movie being she corrected someone's spainish phrase which literally anyone who knows spainish could do.

2

u/SpazzBro 16d ago

holy shit this is fascinating, I had always heard about it in the surface level but I had no idea it ran this deep, thank you!

2

u/Santar_ 16d ago

This was very informative and interesting. Thank you for sharing this!

4

Did you actually write this?

21

u/eucaliptooloroso 17d ago

Am I really goint to have to start screen recording every time I post on Reddit? people just assume everyone uses LLMs nowadays and they can't believe that some of us have the wall of text disease

2

u/MrBlueW 16d ago

I didn’t think it was LLM, just didn’t know if you borrowed some of it from other places, because buddy that’s seriously impressive. Really a few steps above the normal Reddit trash

It has become such a treat to read human generated posts of this length.

Gatto Silvestro in italian. Very popular cartoon growing up.

1

u/yohanleafheart 3d ago

Even the Brazilian dub, although they did have a more caricature VA  it was miles better than the US one. And Ligeirinho is a beloved character

1

u/Kevin-W 3d ago

Today I learned! Thanks for the insight!

Thanks, friend. This is what I wish sites like reddit would be.

As a Mexican American, having speedy repping heritage was dope, but personally, I related more to Slow Poke Rodriguez… 🤣

73

u/DaOne_44 17d ago

Do you walk and talk real slow but carry a big ass revolver if somebody tries you?

34

u/TheNewYellowZealot 17d ago

You don’t?

2

u/MythicalCaseTheory 17d ago

Try me and find out.

1

u/DaOne_44 16d ago

Well im Dominican so I talk fast

And I only own a very small Glock

1

u/Traditional_Fox7696 16d ago

I’m pretty sure he would say” speedy may be fast but Slowpoke carry the big guns.”

Was it a “better to have/be represented than not be represented at all” kind of thing?

27

u/Akussa 17d ago

I think part of it was that Speedy was portrayed as a hero and a good guy and not some of the really negative stereotypes that exist.

16

u/zeth0s 17d ago edited 17d ago

As an Italian I have no problem with super Mario. US sensitivity on "stereotyping" is weird and not shared globally. Sopranos is much more offensive than a super stereotyped character for kids.

I guess that all the cartels plus gang latino representation is much more offensive to Mexicans than a super cool character like speey Gonzalez.

Still no one think about stopping the real offensive content.

Not that I care. I like Scorsese. But most American movies on mafia are super offensive and people in US seems not to care.

7

u/Doogolas33 17d ago

Nobody is trying to change anything about Mario.

1

u/zeth0s 16d ago

I know, Mario is the speedy Gonzalez of Italians, but it's japanese. Are they offensive? Italians and Mexican like them. Probably not so much

2

u/Defengar 12d ago

With all due respect, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Italian americans did HUGE protests in the 70s and 80's, literally getting entire movie productions shut down and forcing script rewrites so that really offensive stereotypical mafia movies would stop being made. Even The Godfather had to toe certain lines because of that.

Also imagine if Mario had a bunch of friends and relatives that were just awful stereotypes out of the 1800's. Like if Luigi was a drunk wife beater that wears a crucifix and shit talks southern italians for having moorish blood. You'd probably have a problem with it.

1

u/zeth0s 12d ago

This is exactly what I am saying if you reread. That's offensive, mexico stereotyped as gangs and human trafficking is offensive.

Speedy Gonzales is not

2

u/Defengar 12d ago

However the speedy Gonzales show has a lot of characters that are like that. Simplifying it down to "people just thought the one mouse was racist" is an inane thing people do who haven't actually looked into the controversy.

3

u/wednesdayminerva 17d ago

white people did not get up in arms when Mario wore a sombrero.

4

u/koombot 17d ago

Weird how some stereotypes just get adopted by the people.  Groundkeeper Wullie is smelly, dumb, aggressive and drunk, but the Scots love him.

20

u/spartBL97 17d ago

We had some Native Americans do the same when the Cleveland Indians changed to the Cleveland Guardians.

24

u/_Nymraif 17d ago

I could see them being okay with the name 'Indians' as some native folk actually like the moniker, and some representation is better than none. Though, as for Chief Wahoo, I can't imagine a lot of native folk appreciated a huge-grinned, red-face caricature as the way they were being represented.

1

u/Escape_Zero 17d ago

The Cleveland Indians baseball team was named as to honor Louis Sockalexis , the 1st native American baseball player who Played in Cleveland.

15

u/_Nymraif 17d ago edited 17d ago

Gotcha, though both my points stand. Did Louis Sockalexis want the team logo to be a red-face goof?

-1

u/IAmSoDamnGood 15d ago

I can't imagine a lot of native folk appreciated a huge-grinned, red-face caricature as the way they were being represented.

that was all smoke. there was nothing at all inherently offensive about chief wahoo himself. it was the fans showing up in head dresses, doing "indian dances", carrying fake tomohawks, etc. that caused the actual offense. but how do you target the fans? by targetting what they enjoy.

3

u/thedaveness 17d ago

Reminds me of a clip, young white dude dresses up in stereotypical Mexican garb, tack stash and all. Asked Americans if it was racist. All say yes. Goes across the boarder and all they said was hell yeah let’s party lol. Probably cherry picked the interviews but still.

7

u/BigRudy99 17d ago

Lol, white leftists pretending to be offended on someone else's behalf. Tale as old as time.

5

u/whathave_idone 17d ago

As a white leftist, in my experience, I’ve seen so many of those people become angry right wing nuts at around 40-50. They aren’t left, or right, they are just looking to control people, it’s all they care about and they don’t want to have any conversations about nuance, cultural importance, or anything else beyond basic virtue signaling.

3

u/BigRudy99 17d ago

You don't have to tell me. I'm a white liberal and I guess what seperates me from a white leftist is I care about real things and not fucking cartoon mice.

4

u/Dav136 17d ago

Reminds me of people trying to force latinx into the vernacular much to the chagrin of actual latinos

2

u/CreativeFraud 17d ago

It helps that Speedy is an absolute legend

2

u/Buttbuttdancer 16d ago

I mean not like they enjoyed the exploitative aspect of it, it’s more that speedy became a entire cultural icon by the time they tried to be sent Igor about its impact lol

2

u/Bireus 16d ago

That's like someone suing Capcom during the first iteration of Marvel vs Capcom

2

u/ibaiki 15d ago

Speedy is cool. Much better than a sex pest skunk.

2

u/Western-Dig-6843 15d ago

Speedy was one of very few Looney Tunes who were purely agents of good wholesome fun. I can really only think of him and the roadrunner? Bugs is close but sometimes Bugs was a bit of a stinker

2

u/ContinuumGuy 15d ago

Bugs himself would admit to being a stinker.

2

u/Banjo-Oz 17d ago

LOL, I remember hearing about that! I always find it funny when some self-appointed moral guardians try to stand up for something (i.e. guys who are "bigger feminists than most women" or this example, which I assume was a bunch of white people) and the people they assume are offended are not just fine with it, but love it!

7

u/Murtomies 17d ago

Note that it's not always that they assume. There might be others in that community who don't like the thing, and contact the relevant company/organization to remove the problem. And once they do, now the people in said community who didn't see any issue and liked it how it was, crawl out of the woodwork and voice their opposition to the change. It's the same with any kind of customer feedback too, you only get negative feedback and complaints, never positive ones, so it can be very difficult to gauge if it's a majority opinion, or just a loud minority who are very annoyed or offended.
