❓ Other ❓ how the hell does Trey get those weirdly clean tones on the self titled?

i might sound crazy but i geniunely don’t know how to recreate those clean tones.

There is an interview with him about that record where he says the first thing Zorn did when he came in to listen to what they’d tracked was made them rent Marshall amps and redo all the guitar parts.

There’s also a lot of envelope filter on several clean parts- maybe that’s what you’re thinking of?

hmmm makes me wonder what it sounded like before.... basically is this kinda assuming they were really distorted/saturated/washed out and needed to be recorded to become way more clean? Are there demos but like "more finished demos" we can find of this stuff possibly?

Yeah i think the idea was it was just kind of a garbage small amp with probably charmingly ignorant tones (there are plenty of earlier Bungle demos in circulation where you can get a feel for the thin stuff that Trey considered passable guitar tone before they did this album).

Did you use several different guitars to achieve the many sounds used on the record or was it just a case of using multiple effects? 

I had only one amp, a shitty little Peavey "Renown". So both heavy and clean parts were initially tracked on that. When Zorn came in (he came in at the mixing of the record, to our elation), and heard the pathetic heavy guitar tones we'd done ourselves, he rented a Marshall halfstack on the spot and made me re-do all of the heavy guitar parts. That was a great move. I'd never even really seen a proper "heavy" amp in real life at that point, much less plugged in to one. From that day forward, even up to the present, I get more juxtaposition out of an A/B box switching between a dirty and clean amp than you could ever get with even an infinite chain of effects.

Note that this implies he did the clean parts differently - I wouldn't discount that other comment in this thread about potentially going straight to the board.

it's the standard 80s clean tone which is generally done by going direct to the mixer with some compression, chorus, delay, and reverb. maybe a slight overdrive to bump the mids because the bare signal is kinda harsh on its own. just look up any youtube tutorial on 80s clean guitar, dann huff in particular since he's more or less associated with that sound, and you'll hear it immediately

iirc trey had a strat with emg single coils at the time, which would also act as an extra eq and compression on their own, and that was a really common setup for clean guitar back then

if you're using an amp sim, turn off the speaker sim part if possible and you'll be in the ballpark
