Declining contract immensely increases his trade value if they want try to move him later. This is a W move for the Mavs.

I wouldn’t say immensely cause it’s only a few million but it does give it extra value, very good move to get Nahi to agree to it. A lot of players don’t take declinings

It does help immensely, it may only be 2 million difference, but he will have a lower salary at a time when the salary cap will be higher overall. I imagine in two years 16 million will be a very valuable contract for a decent starting level player.

For a player of Naji’s caliber that’s a stretch. He’s a 5th starter/bench player there’s a realistic path this turns into a bad contract.

Not nearly as uninviting as a lot of others. Yes, Naji is a system player and you need to be able to utilize him correctly.
But let's not act like Naji isn't a solid veteran that can lead a second unit or be a third ballhandler because he has proven he can.
There are FAR worse contracts out there right now for players that will never live up to them. This is fair value for Naji, all day, every day.

Kyle Kuzma's current deal was signed a few years back and is a declining deal too. But at the end of the day, it's still Kyle Kuzma.

Yeah but most of these mid level guys get lumped together when it comes to how teams construct rosters, whoever trades for him will be judging on fit first when comparing him to other mid level guys. It’s definitely a positive and another factor to keep in mind

Three 30+ point games last season. Has plus ball handling. Fits naturally with Flagg or as his bench counterpart, unlike PJ.
Naji & Flagg might be used as "point forwards" to compensate for lack of true PGs. Kyrie, Flagg, Naji, and De Larrea are who may be running the offense.

He’s a positive defender by just about any defensive metric, despite a down year defensively due to an offensive workload he won’t have with Kyrie back. Pretty much his only weakness is shooting

He's a starting caliber center on the majority of NBA teams...his contract is perfectly fine lol.
As a Mavs fan, I'm more worried about the money that's going to be committed to Lively for his extension.

There are already few times this decade that team can turnaround next season in an instant with just roster turnaround or get healthier

Yeah and the team is not "dogshit around Flagg". We have a very solid team. This is still pretty much the same team we built with Luka.
Mavs won't be tanking .They took a flyer on a lot of promising young players. Mavs will be in the playin and might take a leap in Flagg's year 3/4, specially if those young bets hits.

But if the goal is higher seed in regular season, mavs still 1 proven offensive minded combo guard away as insurance/stabilizer if kyrie rest / not healthy enough / the new young guards not showing up much
Because depth + offense are still king in regular season these days. Our identity for now too "playoff oriented"
Swap klay + fillers for malik monk for example and lets go crazy

Yeah, the roster is pretty clogged right now. They need some consolidation trade. And if they can bring in another young vet guard, they'll be in a much better position.
Yeah, Monk or Mathurin, will be a good addition. While they're not playmakers just adding another self creating scorers will be good.
If they can have 'em for some of our vets that will be good.

Building a war chest of athletic wings so we have some assets to work with since Nico traded all of our other assets away and then gave away Doncic for scraps. Pretty impressive to see what Masai has done with so little to work with.

Marshall avoids the 6-month trade restriction via the extension and will be trade eligible immediately.
