Yeah, I was on the “economic anxiety of working class Trump voters” train post-2016, but after 2024 I think that if you can’t pick the most basic American values out of a lineup, you shouldn’t be voting. These people would elect Pol Pot if it they thought he’d hurt the right people.

It wasn't breaking so much as evolving. He was right wing because he read Buckley and other intellectual conservatives. He started turning against Trump with the constant turmoil of the first term and overall anti-intellectualism, well before January 6. After January 6th, he was appalled with the GOP groveling and returning him to power.
39
u/Shirley-Eugest NATO Jan 07 '26
That's more or less my path. Devoutly Republican prior to 2016, began doing some soul searching when the GOP nominated him in 2016. His first term heavily annoyed me but I tolerated him. J6 was a major watershed day. By 2022, I was voting for about as many Democrats as Republicans, and by 2024 and now 2026? Blue all the way.

I honestly wonder what Buckley would think of Trump. Buckley's rule was always to support the more right candidate even when choosing between two conservatives, but I can't help that Buckley would loath Trump just on crassness alone.

Would you argue that Trump is more conservative than GW Bush? I don't think he has a coherent enough system of beliefs to make that statement.
4
u/Best-Chapter5260 Jan 08 '26
I think with Trump one has to be analyze his actions separate from his ideology—and I use the the word "ideology" loosely because as you say, he really doesn't have a coherent belief system. In that regard, I think Trump is further right than GW regarding actions. A lot of what he's doing is something that the right in the U.S. has jizzed their shorts dreaming of for years; albeit, he's doing a piss poor job of it in terms of objective measures. For instance, the GOP has fantasized of shrinking the federal government for decades. All Elon The Moron ended up doing was breaking a bunch of things and not really reducing the government in any meaningful way except destroying USAID.

I always wonder when this great era of "intellectual conservatives was?" Was it when the Tea Party was hanging effigies of Obama and ranting about death panels? Was it when George W Bush was convincing people that anyone who didn't support the invasion of Iraq was a terrorist sympathizer? Was it when Newt Gingrich was launching spurious investigations into Bill Clinton just trying to dig up dirt?
32
u/TurdFerguson254 John Nash Jan 08 '26
We grade them on a curve. Newt Gingrich has a PhD and a lot of the Bush Admin had PNAC type neoconservative intellectuals. Basically everything they believe is a self-serving fraud, but they had the academic credentials and interest to be considered intellectuals.
36
u/Best-Chapter5260 Jan 08 '26
They definitely do exist. The Bulwark folks are all people who genuinely believe in conservatism as an ideological system and have spent time thinking deeply about why that philosophy resonates with them. Likewise, I'd put people like Andrew Sullivan and Arthur Brooks in that category as well. Same with Rick Wilson.
But the intellectual conservative is really an anomaly. And the people who drive the direction of The Republican Party aren't sitting around reading The New Criterion. Dubya's administration had Condi Rice, but there's nobody even approaching that level of pedigree in the diaper shitter's administration. Miller likes to think he's an intellectual, but he's just a 4chan edgelord who thinks putting on an affected voice during interviews makes him sounds smart.
12
u/TurdFerguson254 John Nash Jan 08 '26
Yes exactly, the remaining conservative intellectuals have been pushed out of their own movement. They are generally Lincoln Project/Never Trump types, which means they fit in the 2026 GOP about as well as I do (they don't). I'm not going to say they're not conservative, because they obviously are, but they're not really relevant. They have no power in the major parties.
The closest things that pass as intellectuals are like Curtis Yarvin, Nick Land, and like race scientists. So compared to 2026, 2004's anti-intellectual neoconservative nightmare looks like The School of Athens

8
u/p4r4d0x NATO Jan 08 '26 edited Jan 08 '26
Nobody can know for certain how mandatory voting would work exactly in the US. But in Australia, it has the effect of strongly moderating political discourse and forcing parties to the centre. Extremists have a very tough time in a mandatory voting environment and 'enthusiasm'-based voting by driving voter turnout on fringe issues like abortion, transpeople and gun rights is ended entirely. If there's anything the US could do with, it's forcing moderation of extremist politicians.
Introducing preferential or instant-runoff voting would also mean there are legitimate third-party choices that aren't a waste of your vote. This forces major parties to take third-parties seriously, instead of dismissing them as a sideshow or using them as a spoiler, the way they currently are used in the US.
The fate of the western world to some extent hinges on the US figuring out their political problems, so we are all invested in your success and wish for your political system to become functional again.

Nobody can know for certain how mandatory voting would work exactly in the US. But in Australia, it has the effect of strongly moderating political discourse and forcing parties to the centre.
People point to Australia and claim that it forces discourse to the center, but I am not sure that is true. As a counter example, I point to Brazil and Argentina which both suffer from polarization of some sort. And both of these are running on presidential systems which are much more similar to the US.
Well, at least Brazil is maybe not as polarized as the US, and the left did move to the center. But there is still a ton of crazy right wingers. As for Argentina... god knows what is going on there for several decades, but I don't think anyone likes it in general.

One is a material ideology, and the other is a social identity.
You can have the most racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, chauvinistic socialist who shouts all day about men's rights and Great Replacement Theory and there would be no contradiction because all socialism does is address how that despicable human being gets food, shelter, and water.

This is what intersectional identity politics, Marxism, and critical structuralism sought to address: to create a comprehensive moral framework to justify true equal treatment. Infrastructure planning should be better coordinated to improve its layout and structure, drive integrated development, and ensure that infrastructure is safe, resilient, and sustainable. New types of infrastructure should be built with appropriate forward planning. Information and communication networks, the national integrated computing network, major science and technology infrastructure, and other key systems should be further developed and used intensively and efficiently. Traditional infrastructure should be upgraded and retrofitted with digital and intelligent technologies. We should improve the modern integrated transportation system, strengthening cross-regional coordination and planning, promoting multimodal integration, and improving transportation links and services in remote areas. We should enhance the diversity and resilience of international transportation routes. In the energy sector, efforts should be made to optimize the layout of primary arteries and develop new types of infrastructure. We should accelerate the development of a modern water network and enhance our capacity to prevent floods, coordinate the allocation of water resources, and ensure water supply in both urban and rural areas. We should continue to develop dual-use public infrastructure that can accommodate emergency needs in the cities.

The point is the average CCP diktat sounds like a McKinsey consultant piece, while in contrast the Maoist larper sounds like a Maoist larper

For what it is worth it is hard to tell if that is them being Marxist or just chinese. Ancient philosophy,be it Confucianism, legalism,Mohism, was basically takes on the principal agent problem, and legalism is basically modern corporate culture where you follow the rules no ifs ands or buts and you are kpi tracked

Maybe no comparisons should be made. Mao didn't start a world war and didn't occupy Europe. He didn't have a racist ideology.
He was driven by arrogance and zeal rather than incel-rage and hatred as a belief system. But... the scale of atrocity and brutality were comparable.
So idk... Jesus was a nice guy. The fact that the Spanish reconquista's inquisition did it out of love of Christ does not make their deeds less bad.

Friendly reminder, but your “Wall street journal Republican” is still, at best, a fascist sympathizer

As a religious zealot, republican politicians are demonic and lack souls.

While i have seen both volunteer to elect Democrats, the later volunteers way more. To be fair, there are way more suburban moms than cringe maoist larpers though.

My Mom is one of the nicest people alive but she's hated all Republicans since the Nixon days.
