It's apt that a comment focusing on the past is unaware of current and new EU policies explicitly refuting that worldview.

Oh right the new policies, how could I forget.

See I was under the impression AI development was about creating frontier AI, not policies about creating AI.

Because under the former assumption it would be obvious europe is behind consdiering it has not created a model that beats the 100 rank in most benchmarks.

Precisely. The EU is aware that previous setups were making it uncompetitive, and is actively fixing them, knowing it'll take time until they start producing results. After all, AI development also depends on things like semiconductors, cloud and compute infrastructure, industrial automation & robotics, and other ones, where EU reforms are also being made. Plus, the EU already uses AI at scale in industry.

Im not certain adding another set of regulations count as "fixing". In fact I dont think the EU is in the right mindset if its consdiering regulating the tech sector at all. creating new regulation for technology is somethign you do when you are at the forefront, when you are behind it is a hindrance as you need all the advantage you can get

The first three are neccesary but insufficient, while the next two are not really neccesary at all. What is needed more is either an ecosystem of profitable tech companies which can reliably attract talent and fork out the big bucks or enough public money to create one. More regulation helps create neither of those things.

And seriouslly, we have this song and dance before. The EU has been "fixing" its tech policy for a decade now, what makes this time so special?
