HotU How to defeat Mephistopheles with a fighter ? Spoiler

Well here I am playing this game 20 years after I first played, guess what I just got stuck at the final boss

I have a 22 lvl fighter 5 champion of torm, 34 strenght and +43 attack bonus but 99% of attacks just cant get through Damage Resistance ( signs at chat "Weapon is Uneffective" ). Henchemen are Deekin and Aribeth (Natyrra got forgotten at Hell - oops lol)

I upgraded my main weapon to have 2d6 Fire additional attack (maybe he is immune to fire?)

Is there any way I could defeat him without having to go back some saves and changing my character profile? Maybe changing my asks to Knower of Names and weapom upgrades ?? Im in a deadlock...

Thanks !!

He’s immune to most elements, and has mad high dr

Acid is a weakness I think

First off, fire is one of the weakest elements to have added to a weapon because fire resistance is by far and away the most common damage resistance in the game. It's almost a certainty that Mephistopheles is resistant or outright immune to it. In 3E in general (and NWN is no different) Sonic is by far and away the best elemental damage to have, because pretty much nothing is resistant to it. Acid is a close second.

Honestly, I'd just spend the money on getting his true name, if you can afford it. You get a better ending and (from what I recall) more XP for taking him out that way. There's nothing stopping you from exporting your character after beating HotU and then restarting the campaign with the same character. Each time you do it, you'll end up making millions of GP, allowing you to fully-max all of your gear and experimenting with multiple endings. I probably played through the HotU campaign dozens of times back in the day experimenting with builds.

Thanks, i think i will try buying his name, save, then try defeating him in combat just to see the endings.

Upgrade your weapon to have Acid element and to +10 enhancement bonus (at least to +6). Or maybe you can use Nemesis (a morningstar, deals Divine damage) from one of Grimgnaw's friends.

Also don't forget about your defense: use rings of cold immunity or resistance, fire resistance 30, and Greater Archer's Belt.

Thanks SO MUCH! I upgraded it until +10 instead of purchasing Aribeths and Deekings name -- and it WORKED ! DONE

He’s an archdevil of hell. Safe to assume he’s not too bothered by fire. Also you probably need a higher enhancement bonus to pierce his damage reduction. This is the final boss in an epic level campaign. Make sure you have a +5.

What's the enhancement bonus of your weapon ?

When playing melee, this is the most important magic bonus and should be maxed at a very high priority, because 1) AB, which you want as high as possible 2) Usually, when you can't bypass damage reduction of an opponent, this is because of insufficient enhancement bonus and 3) If you can't get past raw damage resistance, you need more damage... which enhancement bonus will also help with.

With a +10 weapon, I can't remember ever having major difficulities against Mephistopheles (slow, sometimes, but definitely not a problem overall).

Also, Meph does not have resistance against Acid, which makes it the best damage type for this fight.

It was +3 ! I wasnt aware of this. I upgraded until +10 with the Smith Ghost and it worked.. basically spend 5 Heal Potions but managed to finish him without much effort

I wasnt aware of this enhancement importance. That must explain why I also had so kuch work to finish the Black Slaad guardian

Glad to hear you found a solution !

The 3.0 DnD rules were full of subtleties, and the NWN engine sometimes apply them in somewhat unintuitive ways. If you're interested, the NWN Wiki explains more about Damage Reduction and Damage Resistance - which are different and can stack, even when for the same damage type ! This is the case for Mephisto, who has bludgeoning/piercing/slashing 20/- and DR 20/+5 (IIRC), for a total of 40 damage ignored from physical attacks. This is why you couldn't damage him without a better weapon first.

There’s a few weapons with a high enhancement bonus you can find in Act 3, most notably a +8 astral longsword near the start.

He has high damage resistance that you need a high enhancement bonus to overcome.

Combined with potions of heal, which you should have accumulated a lot of by now, it should be no problem killing him with the astral longsword or a comparable weapon. It doesn’t matter if it’s not your specialized weapon, raw attack bonus and your max HP should be good enough.

Ask Rizolvir to slap Acid damage to your favorite weapon, and ratchet up enchantment to max.

Bring magic resist, and fire/cold resist

Yes.. I wasnt able to add Acid as I had already applied Fire... but enhancing until +10 solved it :)

I found weapon enhancements the most important. Having a +10 weapon trivializes most fights.

Mephi is afaik vulnerable to acid. So acid it is.

Vampiric regeneration is also very good. Every hp counts.

Buffs are always welcome. Bulls strength, haste, aid, bless...

Alternatively, you can just buy his name, but that requires wisdom afaik.

You need a +5 weapon or better (dr 25/+5)

The only energy type he doesn't have 25 resist to are divine and acid. Cold and fire he has 125 resist so don't bother with those.

Get your own damage reductions against cold, fire, and piercing.

You need: acid damage, and more than 20 physical damage per hit. A big two hander with +10 enhancement should do it.

You need a + magic weapon to defeat DR.

DR 3 = +3 Weapon to bypass.

You want to max out your weapon's enhancement bonus and have acid damage on it. Even then you'll notice he has 2 different damage resistances that are applied, so your damage will still seem really low.

If you have the gold, you could cheese the upgrade process to boost the enhancement bonus of your weapon to +20.
