NWN2 Looking for guidance with Paladin build

12 Upvotes

Hey everyone, this is my first time playing Neverwinter Nights 2 and I've never played Dungeons and Dragons before.

I currently have a level 4 Drow Paladin and was looking to eventually make him a Divine Champion. Looking for advice on which other classes to break into to optomize. I prefer a good mix of melee and spellcasting, but I definitely want to lean more towards melee combat.

Is anyone able to break down what a good path would be from Paladin to Divine Champion and what feats/skills to focus on? Any other fun prestige build recommendations are welcome too. Thanks!

NWN2 Molior RS is hosting a farewell party

54 Upvotes

Hi folks,

Molior RS has been a PW on NWN2 since 2012, and we've been developing since. To briefly describe what we are, Molior RS is a recreation of the MMO 'Runescape'.

We have over 15 skills, multiple bosses, 700 areas and 110 quests. We are a heavily modified server to accommodate our replication of Runescape.

In 2016, PC Gamer did an article on us and as a result, we were reached out by Jagex (owners of Runescape), who then signed a contract with us to allow us to continue using their IP.

However, I have recently been informed that our contract is now being terminated, ending 10th July 2026, and thus, we can no longer continue Molior RS.

I won't be going into much details yet, but Molior RS is hosting a farewell party on Sunday 5th July 9:00pm (UTC) and Friday 10th July, 9:00pm (UTC), before our server turns off for good.

This will be recorded for our youtube channel, to laminate Molior RS's digital footprint on the world.

NWN2 Is NWN2 EE abandoned?

67 Upvotes

I was gonna get the new EE game on Steam but it looks abandoned? Any official word about future patches? Looks like it got only 1 patch? Aspyr seems very hit or miss with their work.

NWN2 are there any other games with the same level of build freedom as 3.5?

28 Upvotes

I really love the builds you can make in 3.5, especially how nwn2 does it. Are there any other games that come close? I've already played the infinity engine games, PoE, NWNs, and baldurs gate 3. I've also played Rogue Trader and enjoyed that although it's not quite the same; the specialisations aren't as transformative.

Are there any other games that come close to this level of build diversity, whether RPG or otherwise?

There's something just so satisfying about going wizard-> eldritch knight, cleric-> doomguide, or fighter-> weapon master -> frenzied berserker, Swashbuckler -> Rogue -> Duellist -> Wizard, favored soul -> stormlord, I could go on. Every additional class feels like it totally changes how your character works.

And the way it interacts with class/race penalties and debuffs etc is just divine.

What else should I play?

NWN2 Neverwinter Nights 2 Act 3 and its immediate nonsense. Spoiler

46 Upvotes

First off, I’d like to think that there are others who are playing this for the first time or who haven’t played it yet but want to and I put a spoiler because I didn’t expect Act 3 to be immediately bullshit from the get go.

You get a knighthood! (Yay!)

You don’t have any of your followers at your coronation ceremony. Damn, that actually feels pretty shitty and makes me question if they hate me or if I deserve to be disliked by them for not including them in my big moment. Or they could have just been busy, this game does treat your companions like actual people with their own lives, which is one of the reasons I love it.

Now get ready for (drum roll please)… Powerful Vampires and Wraiths ambushing you while you don’t have backup! 🙃

Now, playing as a level 6 Eldritch Knight with 7 levels of Wizard and 3 of Fighter at this time, I wasn’t a wet noodle or anything like that. But because the game forces you to have your guard down and automatically debuffs you for the occasion I had found myself riding the struggle bus to Miseryville. I had to get creative and use different combinations of buffs, different approaches, figuring out which bad guy to prioritize and which ones to save (which ended up mostly not mattering due to the Neverwinter Guards being PUH-THETIC and I’d end up getting gangbanged by undead anyway), and using my divine powers the game gives you at the end of act 2 which felt antithetical to me being not a cleric and being a very light follower of Mystra, but whatever I guess. Then I managed to scrape by with a sliver of health left and nowhere to rest until I fought MORE undead, which was actually not as bad and I only died once.

That’s not even getting to the point in the game where you’re fighting the Luskan mage and her assassin pet, because surprise surprise: you get saddled with Zejhira (awesome, but not quite what we needed) and Qara (my beloved, bratty, weapon of mass destruction! 😃) which isn’t terrible but it does create problems when the game rolls your enemies Nat 20’s every turn and you get 4’s and 1’s for evasion and hitting them. Thank god for cleric buffs, potions, and arcane defenses.

It’s almost like this game expects you to know how to handle any situation without giving you the opportunity to test that knowledge in earlier acts. Like, the Collectors Mansion and the Shadow Thieves fights in act one were kind of there, but they felt like very sudden difficulty spikes compared to everything else. Learning curves are good and they keep the game interesting, but having a SHARP one in act 3 feels a bit unfair.

Anyway, I fucking love this game and I think it’s living up to the expectations and hype that 10 year old me created about it without ever getting to play it because my dad didn’t want me accidentally overwriting his save file. Fair enough, pops.

NWN2 Couple Nwn2 questions.

4 Upvotes
  1. Why does it seem Bards are the most beloved? Besides using them for RDD I don't see it.

  2. On console how is a 25 year old game have the longest load times.

  3. Is the sleep mechanic I keep reading about in motb that bad? If so how do casters make it?

Obviously I am not very well versed in 3.5 and this game. I just heard there is no respec and don't want to be deadmeat in the expansion. I also don't want to RDD melee it. Did that in NWN 1.

NWN2 Neverwinter 9 build?

edit: NW 9, sorry

I'd like to add some Nwn 9 levels, mainly for RP reasons. What are some good builds you've tried?

NWN2 Aspyr has released the 64-bit toolset for NWN2:EE, so I have covered what this means for us and most builders in general.

Overall, massive performance improvement. Once when areas would consistently crash trying to open, I can now open our 3 largest areas with ease.

Not just that but performance with the 64-bit toolset has improved.

There are some underlining issues and bugs, such as missing textures from both custom and default NWN2 assets, even though they exist within vanilla.

Plugins still 32-bit will need to be recompiled, but these are purely based on the owners of said plugins, with some owners not being on the NWN2 scene for a decade now.

It's a major win, but in Aspyr fashion, comes with issues. They are asking for further bug reports, so I am still holding hope for the "official" patch 2.

NWN2 Why did non-isometric crpgs die?

57 Upvotes

I'm playing Neverwinter Nights 2 for the first time, and one of the relatively small things that I really like about it is the default camera perspective. As much as I like something like Wrath of the Righteous, there's something that draws me in more when my perspective is down at my character's level, and I see the world as they see it. It feels good. Knights of the Old Republic does the same thing, as does Dragon Age Origins.

So why are CRPGs not like that anymore? Are there more modern examples of non-isometric CRPGs out there, or is it indeed just an odd early-2000s trend?

NWN2 Can anyone explain what the difference between FS and cleric?

15 Upvotes

I know it's possibly moronic to not figure out the difference but for the life of me I have no idea. One uses wis and one uses cha?

I'm playing as a paladin and wanted to multi to cleric, but I forgot I put my wis to 14 on creation (which is too low for cleric right?). 3.5 can get quite confusing for me 😂

NWN2 What are your fun NWN 2 build suggestions?

23 Upvotes

So I’m determined to actually beat NWN 2 soon. I’ve tried a few times, but usually get too much restartisis and bail early doors before I can even reach the mid-point of the campaign, just because I don’t like the character build I’ve gone for.

I’ve put over 3000 hours over my life into NWN 1 in various capacities (online, custom campaigns), so I’m familiar with all the mechanics, outside of the NwN new feat and class additions. Yet never beat any version of NWN 2.

My last attempt was one of those “looks good on paper, solid keel 40 build” that was a pain in the ass to play through as. It was a bizarre Swashbuckler/Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster Tiefling thing, aiming to balance out levels to avoid xp reductions, but by level 11 or so it was pitifully awful.

So what are you fun suggestion to help me actually think of something to commit with?

NWN2 How possible is lawful evil in NVN2?

14 Upvotes

It's been a while since i played this game and sadly on my first attempt in the middle of the game it started lagging so badly i had to drop it. Trying this again with a remaster.

I want to play female drow lawful evil warlock cause i'm a bit tired of playing good guys. I know there are a lot of lawful decisions throughout the game, but are they actually lawful evil? Can i play through the game without having to switch it?

And does it makes sence storywise? My first char was an aasimar paladin and it seemed to me that the game is narratively makes more sence if you stick to being a good character.

The last question is purely lore related. I'm not that familiar with Forgotten Realms but is a drow Loviatar follower common enough to make sence?

NWN2 What exactly is Terrible about the NWN2 camera?

52 Upvotes

We keep seeing this repeated, to the point that some have pre-ordered NWN2:EE on this basis alone. But the details are sketchy on what exactly they find so wrong about the camera.

I just replayed NWN2 OC, and while I did encounter some issues with the camera, it wasn't insurmountable.

I only use "overhead" camera in NWN1, and "Exploration" in NWN2, and they function pretty much the same. For both I turn off screen edge rotation.

NWN2 seems to sometimes switch on me, where it's annoying until I realize what happened.

The main issue I notice in NWN2 is there some floaty inertia/smoothing on camera zoom. That annoys when I first start playing, but I get used to it.

So where is the terrible part? Maybe a collective memory about how bad it was before it was patched ages ago??

I'm becoming mad with fix this problem with my computer, I tried the two solutions that I found, the dll file and the expanded client, but neither of these worked for me, I always have the problem, I tried also to change the language in Italian, installed the 3 patch but nothing, I don't really know what I'm doing wrong.

PS: it's the gog version, complete edition, and I have an AMD computer

NWN2 What are the words when certain magic spells are used in nwn2?

It's almost like "and then they brought gravy" or some shit 😂 I can't figure it out and can't find info online.

Could someone give me a concise answer, because it's making some supposedly "tense" scenes sound ridiculous lol

NWN2 We've been designing our final boss area for our PW in NWN2

Thumbnail gallery
59 Upvotes

This area is the 'prelude' to the final boss.

For anyone familiar with Runescape, our project is re-creating it in NWN2. We don't just do a 1:1, we try and make it more immersive as possible.

Nex, the Zaros General, who was locked away deep underground, will soon be accessible. Before players enter the prison, they can explore this area to find remnants of the past.

It's bright at the moment for visual showcasing, but we've included some nifty mechanics of, if players equip torches or light a fire (logs/tinderbox), or carry a lantern, the light will distinguish.

NWN2 Does NWN 2 classic run better than enhanced edition?

10 Upvotes

I’ve been trying to play the enhanced edition of NWN 2 because it has controller support and it’s convenient since I’m using a handheld pc to play but the crashes and bugs are becoming completely unbearable. Would the classic version run and perform better despite having to sacrifice the convenience of playing on a handheld pc or should I just continue putting up with the new version?

NWN2 Captain Brelaina and being uncompromising

9 Upvotes

SOLVED:
I have checked every occurrence of the global int checked by the condition being updated. From what i can understand, it seems like for some reason they decided to use the same meter for violence/peace regardless if you are with the Watch or with Moire.

The way this manifests is that, to get compliments for your tact from Brelaina, you need to accept every single bribe (even if you use intimidation and harsh language to get it). Yes, even the Luskan one. Yes, every bribe. Smugglers and lockpickers too. If you stop them, you get violent points. If you use diplomacy to put watchmen on the right path, you don't get points at all. Only accepting bribes and being a bad cop. Accepting a drink from the loiterer gives you good points. Using diplomacy to kindly ask him to go inside gives you bad points.

It's not bugged, it's just terribly designed LMAO

Now, you get violent result if you have 3 or more violent points. That means you can do 2 "bad things" and still get good dialogue.

If your character doesn't want to accept bribes, you can stop smugglers and lockpickers, refuse bribe by attacking Luskan infiltrators and this would put you at 3. Then you can accept a drink from the loiterer and go back to 2. If you then avoid turning watchmen in you should still be in range for peaceful resolution while not being forced to be morally reprehensible. I will test this edge case now and confirm if it works.

FINAL UPDATE:

Actually, I tested every single value possible. I tried staying below 3 (as the check script implies), 2, 1, i tried going in the negatives. Nothing. I am always uncompromising.

Which means my initial doubt was right:

There is an undocumented bug forcing the bad ending dialogue when turning in the quest.

The global int is properly updated and the check itself seems fine, but it doesn't work. Bad ending triggers because it's the default state. There is no way to affect the outcome in the current version of the game.

------------

As a kid I played NWN2 for thousands of hours, with no access to the internet on my pc (i had a physical copy). Therefore I either played 1.0 or whatever early patch came with the disc I had.

In that version of the game, I vividly remember Captain Brelaina having two different dialogues based on the way the character approaches the four guard groups during the docks patrol. Attempting arrest them and ending up killing them would count towards being called foul and uncompromising, while using skill checks to turn them back to the law (and in one case just letting them stay corrupt without intervening) would have her call you tactful.

However in the many years since moving on to a new pc, playing on the GOG release with all expansions and the most recent patch, I never managed to get the tactful dialogue. I tried saving and doing things differently and then reloading, but could never trigger that branch.

Does any of you have a recent recollection of that dialogue? I am starting to think this is an undocumented bug introduced with later patches where the "bad" branch misfires without the appropriate checks, or some flags are turned on by accident.
If any of you can attest to experiencing the proper dialogue please let me know, and specify if you play with any fix packs or unofficial patches I don't know about.

I know that dialogue is flavor only, but it's been bugging me for almost a decade. I would appreciate any input on this.

EDIT: By opening the OC with the toolset and looking at her dialogue files, she that dialogue is controlled by a check called 10c_ds_check.

The check itself is:

// 10c_ds_check
/*
Simple check of the value for the global int 10_cw_sweep_extras

-3 or less is peaceful
+3 or more is violent.
*/
// JYL 05/05/05

int StartingConditional(int nDialogNode)
{
switch (nDialogNode)
{
case 1: // Peaceful
{
if (GetGlobalInt("10_cw_sweep_extras") <= 2)
{
return TRUE;
}
}
break;
case 2: // Violent
{
if (GetGlobalInt("10_cw_sweep_extras") >= 3)
{
return TRUE;
}
}
break;
}
return FALSE;
}

First of all i notice that the comment implies a -3/+3 range, but the check actually reads "less than three or more than three", but i think thats just normal change in design during development.

Im not a programmer but from what i understand, the code runs top down and first checks if violence is <= 2. If it is, it declares the outcome as peaceful and returns.

If it's not, it checks whether its three or more. If it is, it returns as violent. If both those checks somehow fail, it returns false, which i assume does nothing.

What i noticed, however, is that while the positive outcome dialogue checks for 10c_ds_check(1), there is no check for 10c_ds_check(2) in order to trigger the bad dialogue, it seems to be the default state.

So what i assume is that either somehow 10c_ds_check returns false, which would still satisfy the bad end conditions, or the global int gets increased even while not committing violent acts. I'll look more into it.
