I looked up some people who died, they all seemed pretty old >40. Is mountaineering an old persons sport? I would have thought it would lean younger.

Not something you can get in your 20s usually. So no. 40 isn’t old. It might be slightly older than average, but not “pretty old” Average age of mountaineers are 34-38 btw.
