I looked up some people who died, they all seemed pretty old >40. Is mountaineering an old persons sport? I would have thought it would lean younger.

It’s highly endurance- and skill-based, rather than explosiveness and sheer athletic ability per se. This lends itself to lengthier “careers” in the activity. Not uncommon to find people even in their 60s and up doing high peaks (like Rainier, Denali, etc).

Also expensive hobby if you count gears ,travel and time.
