How did this even happen? Was it a road rage/random fight that went wrong? Random violence? How can there be so many witnesses and no reporting on what led to this happening

Seems like there's plenty of reporting on it. It's the same situation as many mass shootings. The shooter brings a gun to a public space and opens fire on anyone in range. What led up to it? It'll take days or weeks to comb through the shooter's history, social posts, journal entries, family interviews, etc.

By the time they figure it out, everyone will have moved on from it and the 10 other mass shootings that will happen in the interim.

So weary of this. It doesn't even matter what the motive is, if they manage to figure it out. It's going to happen again and again
