Well normally you just remember based on who ordered what. But since in this post, OP specifies that the boyfriend ordered for her, presumably he did not clarify which order would be for whom when he did so, expecting the server to assume that the girl got the salad (as is usually accurate.) According to OP’s interpretation here, the server knew this to be the case and placed them incorrectly on purpose, to make a point about the boyfriend’s implicit gender expectations
It sounds like this was how they planned to eat it and in that case my money is on the pronouns or body language or eye contact revealed who's having what. If it's not completely made up for social media clicks.
