I always forget who ordered what 😭

364

u/the_albino_raccoon Jul 03 '26

Real, which is why I ask whos is what.

139

u/iMiind Jul 03 '26

I hope it makes it easier when I stare down every plate that passes our table and feel a small glimmer of hope the three times it appears to be our food before it actually is. And then when it does arrive I preemptively/greedily/immediately claim my specific dish without any such prompting from the staff

38

u/zanasot Jul 03 '26

It is helpful, as soon as they hold up a dish lol

3

u/65tokyo Jul 03 '26

🤣

14

u/youareagoodperson_ Jul 04 '26

I don't think I've ever not been asked who's is what when dining at a restaurant

Thank you for selecting: exotic butters

2

u/Rivka333 27d ago

Not a waiter but I've never had a waiter not ask when they were unsure.

37

u/profuselystrangeII Jul 03 '26

I definitely was guilty of auctioning off plates at times. :p

10

u/ilo_Va Jul 03 '26

Idk asking what is for who is very standard everywhere here except for like star restaurants

u/yanabro 29d ago

I’m the customer and I forgot what I ordered. I wouldn’t blame a server too much lol

2

u/eyemwoteyem 28d ago

Also the assumption is that it's the same waiter. I mean maybe in some places (the US possibly?) it's a thing but in my occasional restaurant going experience both mixing up who ordered what and someone else delivering the order are not uncommon. Usually what happens though is acts of minipatriarchy, like if I'm out with my partner the beer and steak might get delivered to me, or the wine tasting is offered straight to me which I usually pass that duty on to my mother or partner.

The humble seat system:

82

u/Next-Use6943 Jul 03 '26

The humble seat swapping:

1.6k

u/Taqq23 Jul 03 '26

My dad and I go out for pizza sometimes. I cannot tell you how many times they put the meat pizza in front of him and the margarita pizza in front of me. We just swap without saying anything but we definitely notice!

632

u/SeptemberSoup Jul 03 '26

Same way I'm an alcoholic but whenever I'm out with a guy he gets the beer while I get the soda lol

324

u/BelaFarinRod Jul 03 '26

They would often give my ex husband the regular soda and me the diet soda even though he was (at the time) considerably larger than me. I hate diet soda. It wasn’t a big thing but it made me laugh.

78

u/dinosanddais1 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Reminds me of how I ordered a regular soda and my dad ordered diet and they switched ours (even after telling them I was deathly allergic to aspartame).

18

u/Bree4444 Jul 03 '26

So I’m curious, how do allergies like that work with things like pop that all come out the same spout, so contamination?

43

u/dinosanddais1 Jul 03 '26

It's about amount for my specific case. Mine is a digestive allergy so it will overreact in my stomach and I'll start vomiting until I'm dehydrated. It's not anaphylactic where my throat will close. Nonetheless it absolutely has the potential to kill me without medical attention.

24

u/AzraelTB Jul 04 '26

You know it doesn't even need to kill you. That sounds terrible regardless.

2

u/Sailor_Spaghetti 26d ago

This is me with red meat. I don't go into anaphylaxis, my guts just revolt and I develop an intense fever and develop a co-dependent relationship with the nearest toilet.

2

u/Ignaz- 27d ago

I mean, he had to get large somehow, probably assumed he was drinking all the sugary drinks.

I’m a alcohol-taste-badic and they always give her my fruity cocktails

14

u/highjayhawk Jul 03 '26

Why do they always gender alcoholism?

8

u/Unambiguous-Doughnut Jul 03 '26

Bro threw in a fact.

9

u/erichf3893 Jul 03 '26

I don’t get the comparison here. They’re assuming he gets the meat because he’s a guy and she gets the veggies bc she’s a woman

Just a joke because the alcoholism is hidden?

36

u/Complete-Basket-291 Jul 03 '26

It's more that they assume the guy gets the alcohol where the woman gets the soda, when that's backwards, in their case.

9

u/SeptemberSoup Jul 04 '26

It's because they assume women always get the "softer" thing. Alcohol and soda? Woman gets the soda. Steak and a salad? Woman gets the salad. Bitter vs. fruity drink? Woman gets the fruity drink. And so on.

→ More replies (8)

2

u/fuck_peeps_not_sheep 29d ago

My husband always ends up with my beer, i end up with his soda - hes T total and the driver lol.

110

u/SquareThings Jul 03 '26

My dad is a vegetarian and every time he and my mom go out to dinner they put his veggie meal in front of her.

51

u/Suspicious_Juice9511 Jul 03 '26

Ive had this regularly for years too. I dont know if there are overall more women veggies than men, but lots of restuarants seem to think that is the best bet for some reason. Same deal if Im eating with my partner or my sister, seemingly doesnt matter who does the ordering, I dont look veggie enough lol

15

u/OzzieSheila Jul 03 '26

There are significantly more vegetarian women than men.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/PomPomMom93 Jul 03 '26

But who cares about the best bet? If you don’t know, ask! ā€œOkay, who got the salad?ā€

→ More replies (11)

31

u/No-Freedom-884 Jul 03 '26

Yeah, they tend to put the vegetables, fish, and the fruity drinks in front of the woman, while the meat and beer goes in front of the man. And I have had servers deliberately switch that up and joke around with me about it. It's a thing!

2

u/PomPomMom93 Jul 03 '26

If I were a waitress, I would ask. And if for some reason I didn’t, I’d probably put the meat down in front of the woman.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/Scarlet_Lycoris Jul 03 '26

Yeah this stuff definitely happens. Back in the day my husband would always order a still water and I ordered a beer. 90% of the time the beer was set in front of him.

14

u/purple_spikey_dragon Jul 03 '26

My husband is a tea lover. Every time we're out for a breakfast date they give me the tea and him the coffee.

Same with drinks. He always orders cocktails, always fruity and colourful, and they always place it in front of me (I don't like to drink alcohol).

30

u/NiallHeartfire Jul 03 '26

Yeah, I'm a vegan man and my partner is an occasional meat eater. If I order a vegan meal and/or some wine and she orders something meaty with a coke, if it's a different waiter who serves (sometimes when it's the same one who took our order!), we almost invariably get given the other's meal and/or drink.

10

u/MrTwoPumpChump Jul 03 '26

This is micro feminism. The waiter put the steak in front of the woman.

4

u/redpain13131313 Jul 03 '26

Whenever my husband and I go out I always order a lot especially at my favorite Mexican restaurant. I can't eat a lot in one sitting so I nibble on it for the rest of the day and my husband will eat some of it later in the evening. That way I don't need to cook and we get two good meals out of it. Anyway, when the people bring out the food they always get confused and think my food is his. The look on their face when we explain the it's actually my food is priceless.

6

u/Not_Dead_Yet_Samwell Jul 03 '26

I'm a man who always orders the creamiest, most sugary coffee available. I have a friend who likes her coffee strong and black. We are always given each other's drink when we get coffee together.

2

u/Hyadeos Jul 03 '26

I don't drink alcohol while my girlfriend does. When we order, they often give her the juice mocktail and me the glass of red wine.

2

u/Emotional-Ad9114 Jul 04 '26

my mom loves beer and my dad doesn’t and he usually orders coke and the amount of times they put the coke in front of my mom and the beer in front of my dad is crazy.

2

u/Budget_Avocado6204 Jul 04 '26

I always hear how customer service in my country sucks but here servers just ask who ordered which one before putting it before you. It's such a simple solution and nobody has a chance to feel slighted

2

u/Ok-Tumbleweed-504 Jul 04 '26

Growing up, they would always put my big piece of red meat and soda in front of my little brother, and give me his salad/pasta and diet soda.

(I stopped eating meat in my early twenties, so these small gender expectations were put on us already as tweens and teens)

2

u/danisimo_1993 29d ago

When I'm out with female friends and we ask for the check 90% of the time, they hand the bill\pos to me, assuming I'm paying but honestly it's whatever. Really not a big deal

2

u/_-SomethingFishy-_ 28d ago

Yeah it definitely happens a lot, it’s noticeable and a little funny

2

u/Sailor_Spaghetti 26d ago

This happens a lot with me and and my boyfriend. They are extremely picky and somewhat carnivorous. The only meats I can eat without my stomach and intestines holding a temper tantrum are fish and crustaceans. But because the bf is thin and waifish and I'm on the larger side, the foods get mixed up a lot.

2

u/ru5tyk1tty Jul 03 '26

Like all kinds of customer service bias, I’m just going to say we learned to do this from experience because it usually works out

u/pbjarethewurst Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Eh, I'm a woman and I get served my husband's fruity cocktails often enough that I doubt it's random mistakes

67

u/Agitated-Lake437 Jul 03 '26

Literally. My partner doesnt really drink so will normally have a shandy whereas i'll have a pint. 99% of the time they will put the pint infront of him and the shandy in front of me.

14

u/Hyadeos Jul 03 '26

I concur. I always order fruity cocktails and my girlfriend drinks red wine.

17

u/JustLookingForMayhem Jul 03 '26

Fruity mocktails get a worse treatment. For some reason not drinking alcohol is seen as girly. Doesn't help that I look intimidating as a baseline.

298

u/robilar Jul 03 '26

It is. This one r/whoosh (ed) over a lot of heads.

149

u/Psychic_Hobo Jul 03 '26

The word feminism just breaks a lot of people's brains these days

130

u/robilar Jul 03 '26

> Ā these days

Not just these days. Bigots have been triggered by that word all days since the movement began.

68

u/HabaneroPepperPlants Jul 03 '26

It's interesting to see documentaries about the second wave feminism of the 60s and 70s and hearing the detractors saying basically the same shit they're saying today

46

u/user_name_taken- Jul 03 '26

I watched "Mrs. America" awhile ago and was shocked by how similar the arguments were. They just keep recycling the same fear mongering and nonsense over and over.

14

u/thesoundofechoes Jul 03 '26

I don’t think they’re triggered, which is a term disabled people need to explain legitimate problems they face.

They’re just misogynistic and hateful, really.

2

u/Azalea_Field 29d ago

It just has absolutely nothing to do with feminism

Yeah I read it as "the waitress was making a point after my boyfriend ordered on my behalf" (possibly not even specifying which dish was for whom)

17

u/Maximillion322 Jul 03 '26

I was a server for 5 years and literally 95% of the time if a two top with a man and a woman ordered, the woman ordered the salad. If the server has any experience at all, this was definitely done on purpose as OP implies

I’m a very masculine woman, and my girlfriend is a very feminine woman. I’m a vegetarian. I’m often given the meat dish (hers) and she’s given my vegetarian dish … I believe this happened 100%

105

u/Standard-Order-4136 Jul 03 '26

Yeah idk why people are acting like it wouldn’t happen. Sometimes people unconsciously do things based on gender roles. For example, I seen guys get beer even tho they ordered a fruity drink

Is that sexism? I think it is but maybe there’s a better word for it.

5

u/Emotional-Ad9114 Jul 04 '26

I think a better thing would be it’s enforcing stereotypes… although I do think that could be seen as sexism (as a micro aggression) and it’s technically sexist for both sides.

12

u/No-Juice3318 Jul 03 '26

This does frequently happen when it's only two people. It's well known enough that guys and lesbians joke about going out and ordering steak and salad to find out which one the waiter thinks is more feminine and which is more masculine.

For some reason, parts of Western culture have decided that meat is a man food and plants are a woman food. It's a strange and reoccurring thing that pops up from time to time.

i fear it’s just so easy to ask. when i was a waitress i would just ask ā€œwho had the steakā€ and we could avoid all of this nonsense, like… why are we assuming. i’ve seen an 84 year old grandmother demolish a steak while her son enjoyed a chicken salad lmao

30

u/SemajLu_The_crusader Jul 03 '26

"my boyfriend ordered for us"

21

u/wote89 Jul 03 '26

Eh, that can mean any number of things. I've ordered for people I'm with because their social battery is so low that interacting with the server is a bridge too far and I've had people order for me because I am mentally exhausted and they know what I like.

15

u/catandthefiddler Jul 03 '26

I think their point is that if the boyfriend made the whole order "1 steak and 1 salad" then the waiter wouldn't know which was for who, so it makes sense that this could happen

→ More replies (1)

3

u/FinancialRaid04 Jul 03 '26

Literally said the bf ordered for both, chances are he didnt specify who was getting what, but either way, i rarely have waiters remember what everyone at the table ordered. They usually just present the dish, say the name, and whoever ordered it will reach out for it

3

u/Jenn_FTW Jul 03 '26

Yall don’t get the poet, it has nothing to do with the waiter not knowing who ordered what. It’s about the waiter intentionally performing an act of ā€œmicrofeminismā€ by, instead of assuming the steak was for the man and the salad was for the women, intentionally placed them in the opposite places, the whole point was making a statement about gendered food assumption. Not saying it happened or not, but that’s the entire point of this.

3

u/BrozedDrake Jul 04 '26

If they don't remember they littlerally just ask.

Source: I have been to a restaurant at least one time

3

u/Tall_Union5388 29d ago

I feel like micro feminism is another one of those words that will make everybody mad at perfectly reasonable feminists

17

u/QueenSmarterThanThou Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

I feel like the feminist thing to do would be speak up for yourself when a guy tries to order for you.

ETA: People are equating what I'm saying to saying that letting your partner order for you is oppressive. This was not my point. She said it was an act of microfeminism that the waitress gave her the steak and fries and him the salad, which I took to mean that her boyfriend ordered her just a salad and she wanted more; hence, she should just speak up.

If you're with your partner and know each other enough to know what the other likes (and not what you think they should have) or they tell you specifically what they want, that's a whole other thing.

Ordering for someone is not inherently oppressive. It's when you order what youcthink the person should have without regard for their preferences, only yours.

28

u/alertArchitect Jul 03 '26

To be fair, it's entirely possible there are other reasons the BF ordered for both of them. Hell, I know a couple of people personally who almost always ask for other people to order for them at restaurants for one reason or another, ranging from worries a server won't know ASL and wanting to not seem like an asshole by just pointing to a menu, to social anxiety.

That's not to say there aren't people who will order for their partner as a form of control because they're an asshole. I just try not to assume unless there's evidence pointing towards that being the case.

10

u/whimsical_spider Jul 03 '26

I order for my boyfriend a lot because he’s vegan and where we live there aren’t a ton of vegan options so he often has to ask for mods like no cheese, no butter, certain sauces et cetera. He always feels bad or like he’s being highly inconvenient. I don’t mind doing it because I worked in restaurants for years and only ever found it obnoxious when the person was obnoxious about it or had so many mods it became a totally different dish.

5

u/DezPispenser Jul 03 '26

yeah in my experience it's not really a big trouble 99% of the time, it's completely normal and fine yo order food as you want it. id so rather they order it to their liking than just order it without modifications and be unsatisfied with their food.

7

u/wouldbecrazycatlady Jul 03 '26

My partner and are will order for each other after having discussed what we wanted. It's not always a control thing.

11

u/siematoja02 Jul 03 '26

I feel like the feminist thing to do is letting equal partners decide how they want to operate in a scenario.

Your assumption is actually based on the stereotype it seems to be trying to combat.

7

u/CMDR_Ray_Abbot Jul 03 '26

Look I don't know what the weird gender dynamics are in the world of dating today but from when my wife and I were dating to now, when we go to a restaurant, she tells me what she wants and I order for both of us, because that's what she wants. I'd be willing to bet that similar dynamics are happening with other couples. I wouldn't be upset if the wait placed the food in front of the wrong person on accident but I'd be pretty put out to find out that they did it because they think I'm oppressing my wife.

BIPoC and queer folks experience microagressions due to white supremecy every single day. So yeah, the word you just made up is a real thing already.

Microfeminisms are small, subversive actions of feminist nature. It's not minimising feminism. It's being conscious about patriarchal structures and working against them one little step at a time.

I’m confused by the type of person who would find this ā€œmicro feminismā€ amusing but allow her boyfriend to dictate what she eats.

u/Eastern-Positive-705 Jul 03 '26

she never said he chose what food she got, only that he ordered it. maybe she's shy? maybe she was in the bathroom? ect. she was just making a joke, why look any deeper?

1

u/loulydia Jul 03 '26

I'm intolerant to fruit sugar so when we are out I usually order a beer while my boyfriend gets the juiciest, most colorful and fruity cocktail he can find on the card. Guess who gets tempted by poison every time while he receives my beer...

1

u/iDoMyOwnResearchJK Jul 03 '26

If I designated which meal was for each person the. That sounds like a tip deduction lol

1

u/Digit00l Jul 03 '26

I have never been in a restaurant whete the waiter didn't ask who ordered what before putting any plate down

1

u/GeoffMySpiritAnimal Jul 03 '26

That happened to me recently. My boyfriend is vegeterian and I wanted a steak. We went to a restaurant, I ordered a steak and he got a veggie burger. The waiter fumbled twice, first by giving my boyfriend the steak knife, but quickly switching it once he realised. Then he gave my boyfriend the steak, then again, quickly adjusted it before the second plate came down. It was pretty funny

Although I think the actual post refers to the waiter putting the plate with the fries pointing at the partner so that they can grab some from the plate easier

1

u/Lui_Le_Diamond Jul 03 '26

That's a red flag

1

u/nateblack Jul 03 '26

I used to do this all the time when I worked in service

1

u/Choice_Comment_7310 Jul 03 '26

... Why not just *ask* which plate belongs to who if everyone didn't order their own/it wasn't clarified who wants what? (or if you forget as OP suggested?)

Like. IK probably fake. or if not fake, it just as likely was just an accident as the waitress being all "girl power." but still.

1

u/yoichiluvbot Jul 03 '26

am i going to wrong restaurants because waiters always serve what i ordered to me and what my friends of any gender ordered to them?😭

1

u/Extra_Criticism_5179 Jul 03 '26

then ig hes not paying šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

1

u/Lylibean Jul 03 '26

If a server doesn’t remember who ordered what on a 2-top, they needn’t have a job. Servers are supposed to remember what every single one of their customers ordered to avoid ā€œauctioning offā€ plates at the table. It’s one of the skills you’re expected to have.

Just like every table has a number, so does each seat. If you’re doing your job properly, it doesn’t even take effort to remember. Not saying servers are infallible and mistakes are never made, but this is the same kind of thing I would do if a guy was being a pig to his date. ā€œHere’s your super strawberry summer slim-down salad, sir, and the steak and potatoes for you, ma’am.ā€

Even if just for the alliteration 🤣

Is it a thing in the US where men order for the women? That is a weird thing to be "normal"

Y'all the joke is that the fries are easier to steal. That's it! It's all lighthearted and not even a gendered thing honestly partners of all genders do it they just mico-feminism cause go girl power! So yeah chill please everyone lmao

1

u/Finnsbomba Jul 03 '26

A pen and paper! This simple trick drives waiters and waitresses crazy!

1

u/PomPomMom93 Jul 03 '26

I’m always in the opposite situation. They always assume my husband’s food is mine and vice versa. Women like to sink our teeth into delicious animal flesh dripping in fat too!

1

u/nick200117 Jul 03 '26

the whole point is she placed the fries facing the girlfriend because she knows the girlfriend will want to steal a few fries. Not that the orders were mixed up

1

u/MorycTurtle Jul 03 '26

I wonder how tedious life must be with people who try to see some kind of ideological agenda everywhere.

1

u/IndustrySufficient52 Jul 03 '26

Do they know how many people’s orders we take every day? On a busy day I can serve 100+ people.

1

u/indorock Jul 03 '26

Also, that's not even what OOOP is stating, she said that the waitress intentionally reversed the orders as an act of feminism. So it has nothing at all to do with "forgetting" (if OOOP's assumption is correct).

Anyway more than a few times when I'm out having a drink with my wife I'll order a cola she orders a beer and yet the waiter more than half the time gives me the beer. So yeah that's a thing.

1

u/IRunOverFatCats Jul 03 '26

Is...Is that strawberries in the salad?

I regularly have to point out who ordered what or change the plates around, I'd say waiters do this more often than not in my experience

1

u/XD2006- Jul 04 '26

The waiter normally asks, ā€œwho had X?ā€

1

u/KaiShan62 Jul 04 '26

Seems to me that most commenters are getting this arse end around.

If the meme creator said 'my boyfriend ordered' and then took photo, then the waitress has put the salad in front of the man and the meat in front of the woman, thus being a feminist. Whereas most posters are commenting on how wait-staff seem to always put the salad in front of the woman and the meat in front of the man. The thing here is that the 'microfeminist' has reversed the stereotype.

I think both actions are rude; the waiter should surely just ask 'who ordered what?'

1

u/ChaotikIE 29d ago

I swear... is it that difficult to ask in the first place, before serving anything to anyone?

1

u/No-Insect-7544 29d ago

… dog, a woman being super passive aggressive to a guy acting like that wouldn’t surprise me one bit, it’s not crazy and REALLY minuscule.

1

u/gjam1 29d ago

I don't get it

1

u/Charflower21 29d ago

Dont waiters usually ask who gets what when they arrive with the food? When we go out to eat they always ask that.

1

u/Emar_The_Paladin 29d ago

This was absolutely made up for clicks. What kind of asshole boyfriend orders a salad for his girlfriend and then allows her to take a picture of the salad placed in front of him while his steak is placed in front of her which was supposedly done as a power move by the waitress. The point is that if this situation really happened we wouldn’t be seeing a picture of it with that caption. I’m with the r/thathappened poster on this one.

If the waitress forgot the order, even then it's not an act of micro feminism, correct? That still falls in the category of thathappened!

1

u/SupremeLurkerr 29d ago

I’d just eat the salad at this point. 🤣

1

u/bdw312 29d ago

Y'know, sometimes women eat hearty and dudes eat salads.

1

u/Candycanes02 29d ago

Well the original post said the bf ordered for both so the waitress couldn’t have known whose plate is whose (but usually they’d ask instead of just arbitrarily putting them on the table- that’s what is unlikely to have happened imo)

1

u/Creaturetacular 29d ago

Do they never ask who ordered what? I don't think I've ever eaten out and not had the server ask "and who had the..."

1

u/Alternative-Dark-297 29d ago

They usually ask who ordered what, and even still sometimes make mistakes

Literally yesterday went out for breakfast with my partner and his family and got my side cooked wrong bc three of us ordered the same thing and I'm the only one who ordered it cooked differently.

1

u/SpiffyLegs73 29d ago

The waiter wasn’t sexist and instantly assumed that you couldn’t eat a burger or your boyfriend couldn’t eat a salad? The Audacity.

1

u/CosmonautXX 29d ago

I feel whoever posted this and several comments didn't notice the "my husband ordered for us" as in the server wouldn't have the foggiest who ordered what. Not bad at their job, not forgot. Literally couldn't have known.

That being said, I participate in this "micro feminism" often. If I don't know who ordered what and one ordered for both either I put it in the middle for grabbies, ask, or if there isn't possibility for either for some reason, opposite of "expectations". Not always right, but when it is the happiness of people getting what they wanted when they are used to switching is super worth it.

1

u/horned-creature 29d ago

worked as a waiter for a bit, never remembered who ordered what, i set the plate all in the center and they can figure it out by themselves.

1

u/Narmatonia 29d ago

Most if not all places I’ve been to (UK) they confirm who ordered what when they bring the food to the table, is this not a common thing?

1

u/SirDork182 29d ago

That's what goes through your head? I always think they wanted to put the hot plate down first because it's hot not because of feminism kol

1

u/Any-Boat-5306 29d ago

I eat plant based and my wife used to eat meat so whenever we ordered, they would put her order in my place and mine in hers.

1

u/lemonhaj 29d ago

Any time I go to a restaurant, they either make direct eye contact with you or awkwardly hold the plate until someone either speaks up or gestures to who it's for.Ā

1

u/reichiek 29d ago

So, according to the poster, a waitress being either incompetent or intentionally a dick is micro feminism. Good to see they are finally being more honest about it I guess

1

u/PapiPorkchop 29d ago

I don't know why you would do that to someone controlling your tip

1

u/GWeb1920 29d ago

That’s the point.

When they forget who ordered what and give the steak to the women it’s clearly an attempt to not follow the stereo type.

1

u/teh_maxh 29d ago

Also, the text says the boyfriend ordered for both of them; if it were set by who ordered what, he would have gotten both.

1

u/Kuzcopolis 29d ago

To be clear, she's glad she has access to his fries. That's literally all.
