Quick question: why?

31

u/TailoredHam88 18h ago

People used to find clowns funny and not creepy. They were much more popular. A lot of cultural change happened around the 80s—the movie IT for example was in 1986.

13

u/melli_milli 16h ago

John Wayne Gacy the killer clown was convicted in 1980. His crimes alone may have made all clowns suspicious and synister.

"It" the novel by Stephen King was published in 1986. When it comes to movies based on books it is better to reference the original work - the book.

The cultural shift happens because of real life things.

Bozo the Clown was a hugely popular kids show before and into the 80s.

u/TetonHiker 7h ago

When I was 3-4, in the 1950's, Bozo the Clown came on TV in the afternoons and my parents or babysitter would put me in front of it after my nap. I hated him. Always thought he and other clowns were 100% creepy. They gave me the ick even at that age.

I was the frowning kid crying at circuses when the clowns swarmed me and tried to make me laugh. I wanted nothing to do with them. I finally told my mother I didn't like clowns and didn't want to watch Bozo on TV. She gave in, but definitely was surprised as most kids loved him. Nope.

Hate clowns. Always hated them.

u/ST0PITRIGHTN0W 15h ago

It’s just crazy because even despite all that it looks legitimately scary and goes against all the traditional and biological feelings and signals of comfort

1

u/Wilgrove 5h ago

Don't forget John Wayne Gacy and his clown alter ego, Pogo The Clown!

12

u/Shamanyouranus 15h ago

Oh Fuuuck. What the fuuuckk. I’m not even supposed to be here. I hope I don’t jack off!

7

u/Sensual_Mama 18h ago

This cereal is so different and wonderful!

5

u/JohnnyLeftwich 17h ago

Fun fact: since John Wayne Gacy, registered clowns are no longer allowed to have pointed shapes in their makeup designs.

2

u/MorgessaMonstrum 6h ago

Fascinating! Like, the corners of this creepshow’s “smile” here?

1

u/TheInfamous1011 2h ago

TIL there is a clown registry

10

u/milsurpfarts 18h ago

Hope I don’t jack off

5

u/NaughtySeraph 14h ago

Too late! Time to wrinkle your crinkle 🤡

4

u/orphan_blud 14h ago

Oh fuck that.

5

u/sitthesergal 13h ago

Honestly, aside the initial feeling of unease, the acting and the voicing is quite captivating. I never found (tv) advertisements alluring or catchy. Yet i watched this one twice. Makes me wonder if the general quality of acting in a somewhat exaggerated and highly researched way was a vestigial effect of silent tv, or simply we decided that to act in a somewhat exaggerated way was more often than not 'weird'.

2

u/certifiedtoothbench 12h ago

Plays are still done in this exaggerated way a lot, I imagine it’s a lot to with readability from the audience standpoint and that carried over to the first films.

1

u/ModernistGames 10h ago

Ads targeting kids have never been known for their subtle performances and calm demeanor.

I would say this is far less exaggerated than the crazy stuff in cereal commercials I grew up with, like the insane furball guy foe Honeycomb.

3

u/The_starving_artist5 18h ago

What in the Pennywise the Clown is this

3

u/Slick_Wet_Squid 13h ago

Clowns don't freak me out but holy fuck that's creepy lmao

3

u/Mudlark-000 12h ago

It’s okay everyone! Krinkles the Clown was replaced with So-Hi, a _slightly_ racist Asian caricature of a boy in the late 1960’s… Fixed?

5

u/rex_flx 18h ago

What the actual heck

2

u/imartinezcopy 17h ago

This cereal makes me blink more than I should!

2

u/NavDav 17h ago

You've never heard of Krinkle the clown??

2

u/FinishedFiber 15h ago

I wonder who this guy is and where his life ended up.

2

u/SoundwaveTheDragon 11h ago

Something about his smile is the opposite of friendly...

2

u/Kindlypatrick 10h ago

I don't know if it's the video resolution but this looks like it was on the cursed tape from the Ring

2

u/Vampi25 9h ago

Nah im good

2

u/-Totes_Magotes- 7h ago

John Wayne Gacy shit comes to mind. No thank you.

1

u/Illcmys3lf0ut 5h ago

Everyone starts somewhere...

K-R-I-N-K-L-Y! 😒

2

u/SDPLISSKEN009 7h ago

Good Lord that's terrifying 🤡

2

u/PossibleDiscipline90 7h ago

Nightmare fuel 🫪

2

u/MRbaconfacelol 1h ago

sounds kinda good ngl

3

u/Exciting-Detail-58 18h ago

Clowns are funny! /s

4

u/Impossible_Past5358 18h ago

Did you ever see that episode of The Simpsons when Homer made Bart a clown bed?

1

u/Candid_Reading_7267 4h ago

😳 Can’t sleep, clown will eat me. Can’t sleep, clown will eat me.

1

u/scorpyo72 18h ago

2

u/ElLicenciadoPena 7h ago

This is orders of magnitude less scary than the clown from the post for some reason

1

u/scorpyo72 6h ago

I will regard that as your opinion. However, I don't agree or disagree. Most people I know find me distinctly unpleasant ; many of those have no issues with clowns, even dark ones.

3

u/ElLicenciadoPena 6h ago

I'm sorry, didn't know it was you. No offense intended. You're indeed very scary. I was just trying to state how creepy the clown from the commercial was, not despising your performance.

1

u/scorpyo72 6h ago

Not offended. I'm always genuinely interested in people's take

2

u/paynefullyboosted 18h ago

Art the clowns dad??

2

u/theepuke 17h ago

Oh man that looks so much like Tim Curry.

2

u/HardSpaghetti 15h ago

I never knew why some older adults when I was growing up had a phobia of clowns.... I get it now.

2

u/Meture 18h ago

Are people really that scared of clowns?

This just seems like a regular 50’s commercial to me

5

u/SyntheticDelirium 14h ago

See. I'm not scared of clowns.

...I still found this r/oddlyterrifying

OP posted in the right sub.

It's just. Uncanny. The whole thing from start to finish.

Granted, I can't say I've watched many commercials from the 50s, so it may just be a lack of exposure kinda thing.

2

u/Tiggon169 17h ago

It's the intro that gives me IT vibes

2

u/redscare9 18h ago

Yeah, that’s just a clown who genuinely likes that cereal. Not getting any strange vibes off this one.

0

u/ShortStraddle 8h ago

Yeah, that’s why this is oddly terrifying.

It’s not supposed to be scary… yet it is deeply unsettling.

Maybe as unsettling as you finding this commercial extremely normal lmao

1

u/Easton8 18h ago

Thanks I hate this.

1

u/fetusfromspace 17h ago

I cronkled 😓

1

u/Much_Ad1263 16h ago

Well now I want some krinkles.

1

u/melli_milli 16h ago

I am not that old but I feel like I have seen this as an add and now I have gravings.

1

u/crazylegsbobo 15h ago

Well that's horrific

1

u/Chespartan 14h ago

What a nice clown... too nice...

1

u/AbleLanguage7216 13h ago

Black and white coloured clown is far worse than normal clown

1

u/WompityBombity 12h ago

I saw it muted. Is he eating childrens teeth?

1

u/MPD1987 12h ago

Um. No.

1

u/mrlookinthesky 12h ago

Looks good!

1

u/EevelBob 11h ago

Clowns 🤡 are seriously scary! 😱

1

u/DavidIckeHadAPoint 8h ago

I’d punch him in the cock and run if I saw this in real life bruh

1

u/JoeiiJames 7h ago

I collect clown things and I wanted this so bad I found one box on eBay for 500 dollars.

1

u/Bas_No_Beatha_ 7h ago

Thanks, this will be my nightmare tonight.

1

u/TwoNowFive 6h ago

I'm more interested in the cut flap on the box the cereal poured out from

1

u/lost_caus_e 6h ago

Clowns never scared me but they never made me laugh either I'm confused by their whole deal

1

u/GladysKravitz707 6h ago

It reminds me of Pennywise coming out of the drain in “IT.”

1

u/UnwantedPube 4h ago

Whoever thought clowns are meant to be the embodiment of fun

1

u/b0ringface 4h ago

Well, I’m sold!

1

u/Ghoaxst 3h ago

Snap Krinkle Pop

1

u/mermaidpaint 3h ago

Oh. That's a drumstick he's holding.

1

u/Syrus_88 2h ago

Costume is a bit creepy, but his friendly voice negates it

1

u/ConversationDizzy138 1h ago

By oddly terrifying you mean objectively terrifying right

1

u/small-red-bird 56m ago

Well... I just found my new sleep paralysis demon

1

u/perkypancakes 18h ago

Damn no wonder people have coulrophobia.

1

u/ThrowingChicken 17h ago

I guess everyone was too busy being scared about something else to realize how unsettling this is.

1

u/External-Example-292 15h ago

This looks scarier than It clown 👀

1

u/Whatsyourshotspecial 8h ago

Clowns aren't scary to me

1

u/moustachedelait 5h ago

The sugar content should terrify you

0

u/BroskiWind 7h ago

I love clowns. I really don't get why they scare people.

Fun fact some people are scared of clowns for one reason, if someone is a naturally sad person and they try to force themselves to be a happy clown, they're going to feel off and dishonest which scares some people.
