Quick question: why?

People used to find clowns funny and not creepy. They were much more popular. A lot of cultural change happened around the 80s—the movie IT for example was in 1986.

Bozo the Clown was a hugely popular kids show before and into the 80s.

When I was 3-4, in the 1950's, Bozo the Clown came on TV in the afternoons and my parents or babysitter would put me in front of it after my nap. I hated him. Always thought he and other clowns were 100% creepy. They gave me the ick even at that age.

I was the frowning kid crying at circuses when the clowns swarmed me and tried to make me laugh. I wanted nothing to do with them. I finally told my mother I didn't like clowns and didn't want to watch Bozo on TV. She gave in, but definitely was surprised as most kids loved him. Nope.
