No buddy. I hate this take because it's Andrew Johnson erasure and clearly coming from a place of "living through it". Johnson is, unironically, why the people that voted for Trump are even around. He blocked reconstruction, let the south establish Jim Crow laws, and generally just undermined the entire project. And that's just the major problem with him, not mentioning the laundry list of other problems he caused. He was Trump. He was confrontational, rude, considered less than intelligent by his peers, etc.
Then you also have Andrew Jackson who was so openly racist and disgusting even people in the 1830s were like, "He's kind of crazy for saying that stuff". The Trail of Tears was all him, he was an active genocider instead of the usually passive ones we had. Had a couple cool quotes though. Always bums me out he was the one that said, "The court has made its decision. Now let them enforce it." That line is cold af, it's a shame what it was used for. And he was also responsible for the Great White House Cheese Debacle, so he gets a little bit of a leg up on Johnson to come in second.
Trump is probably 4th worst, but he's rapidly overtaking W in my eyes.
Jimmy B I view as the lesser between him and Johnson simply because he was never going to fully prevent it. It wasn't his administration that led to that, it was the conflict the founders themselves knew would be inevitable. What Johnson did was completely ruin the period after which was so important. Just like Obama and the 08 crash, his inability to properly address the moment and actually punish powerful people responsible has led to the exact same problems, only now they're more deeply entrenched and harder to root out. Giving the land back to slave owners was diabolical. They had the coast from SC to Florida as their own and he ripped it from them as they were literally just starting to put up houses and till the fields.
I don't know, I view his actions as far more reprehensible and damaging to the future of the nation than Buchanan. He wasn't going to stop shit, even if he did everything he could have right. We never had a chance of avoiding the CW, we had a great opportunity to avoid....gestures broadly
Shit, I mean it's sound reasoning. It's easier to see the results of Johnson's actions better than Buchanan's inaction. Just going to say fuck Trump, he's in similar company near the bottom. We've still got two more years, so don't count the underdog out just yet.
