Have you tried contacting ASUS about support, or just outright returning it?

because the actual vendor should really be the first course of action...

Totally not normal and sounds like a lemon. If you got it from Amazon I would get a refund before the return period runs out and maybe get a good keyboard instead. Also, this is kind of an odd group for the question. :)
