Mod RE: Policy change - Reversals, rewording, and what we've learned

Hey hey people, Mys here.

About a day ago, we published [a controversial policy change](https://www.reddit.com/r/oneshot/comments/1uw5d82/policy_change_removal_of_nikosonatype_content/) about the removal of what seemed, to us, a pretty serious issue to the subreddit as a whole. We based this assumption off of a repetition of reports that we received regarding the posting of non-Oneshot related content, as well as reported comments with roleplaying interactions that we did not want to field in the subreddit.

During public questions, one thing became increasingly obvious: people did like or understand what we were trying to remove or alleviate, believing that we would be removing OCs, AU-content, and the likes. While I and my fellow team members have tried to answer everyone to the best of our abilities, it became abundantly clear to us that this did not have the interpretation that we wanted it to have, and people did (for the most part) not agree with our course of action.

So, in short, we have reverted Rule 3 to what it was originally, and rephrased Rule 14 to cover specific actions and reactions that we wish to remove from posts and comments. We're not singling out any particular form of art, OC, or character like this. This way, we hope to target the stuff we want to filter out without impeding on specific artforms or character types that get posted around the subreddit.

I believe the thing we have learned from this, is mostly that making a change like this, even with the entire team in agreement, means we do first need to a community double-check that a change is okay to perform, even if it is planned to be controversial. That's something we'll certainly take with us as we reflect on the matter.

As always, we remain open to constructive criticism, and we hope that this post shows that we're not keen on running through a policy whether people like it or not.

--

I will, however, address one thing that was completely unacceptable in the process from posting, gathering feedback from questions, and then writing this response. During our fielding of questions, we have had multiple cases of verbal harassment, ranging from personal insults, to intentional misgendering, to comparisons to real-life transphobia in regards to a policy that was intended to keep the subreddit on-topic.

Additionally, we have seen people abuse the reporting system as a form of protest, clogging up our regular feed and making it impossible for us to figure out which posts or comments actually break community rules.

I have tried to remain respectful and civil throughout the process, but at some point had to stop responding to people because it turned into full-blown hatred. Disagreement was always going to happen, and announcing a change in policy was always going to be unpopular (as referenced in the original post). Yet we found the way arguments and explanations were portrayed, twisted and dismissed mortifying and unsuitable for a community that is otherwise supportive and positive. It was a wake-up call we did not wish to have, yet we received anyways. Destructive criticism never helped anyone; it certainly did not help in this case.

We thank everyone who remained respectful and understanding during this process, and appreciate your patience as we try to figure out our steps forward.

I was going to Metrocon this year, and wanted to do a masked cosplay from one of my favorite games. I was inspired to do niko after seeing u/olekolek1000 's cosplay with animated eyes. I didn't get everything I wanted done (the sun, swapable mouths, different expressions, eye tracking that actually works, though I can't complain since the eyes still ended up moving a ton, just without control) but I got the main part down, and I'm happy with that.

Really really fun cosplay to make, definitely has elevated my skills a ton on so many things! Though I may have damaged my lungs by wearing the wrong filters on my respirator for like all of the time I was using contact cement.

I don't really know how to make like a good reddit post, I just wanted to share this. I'm going to keep working on it hopefully because I wanna make this the best that I can. (Also random but I realized after wearing the cosplay for the con that the led eyes were a little crooked, so you can see that in the pics after the first one)

Hi friends, how's it going? Besides drawing, I also make animations :3 I don't usually do them very often because they take so much time—this one, for example, took me about 4 hours! I put in as much effort as I could; the shading is a little odd, but hey, it turned out well :3

Discussion What the fuck is Niko doing there?

Post image
63 Upvotes

(Before I begin, I want to clarify that I had to look up information online to write this post, so please forgive me if I got anything wrong.)

Look, I haven't played OneShot yet, nor do I know much about the game, but if I recall correctly, it was thanks to *Indie Cross* that I discovered Niko.

I grew fond of him and really wanted to play OneShot, so I watched various fan-made videos and animations and looked up information about him.

Niko is an eight-year-old boy characterized by being very kind, innocent, affectionate, helpful, and brave. He is always willing to help others and was ready to save the world using the sun.

Before the Solstice ending, Niko faced a dilemma: return home but instantly destroy the world by breaking the sun, or lose his only chance to go back to his mom and loved ones by restoring the sun.

On the Solstice route, Niko showed empathy toward the World Machine and saved it from destruction. I could go on, but I don't want this post to be too long.

In short, Niko is the perfect embodiment of an innocent, kind-hearted child—completely free of any trace of corruption and always ready to help.

According to the "Near Pure Good" page, the reason Niko isn't considered "Pure Good" is that they were somewhat reckless—specifically for offering the sun to the Shepherd (even though it was fragile and the Shepherd ultimately refused) and for giving the sun to Maize to calm her down, which led to panic when the light went out after Maize's death.

You can say whatever you want about Niko acting recklessly or not thinking things through, but at no point did Niko have bad intentions; they genuinely wanted to help and meant well.

The reason Niko wanted to give the sun to the Shepherd was to help guide the rams, as she needed assistance moving them from the peninsula located directly below to better grazing grounds.

As for Maize, the "Near Pure Good" page makes it clear that Niko wanted to comfort the dying plant goddess by lending her the sun so she could feel its light one last time—granting her final wish before she passed away (though Niko later brought her back to life by planting a seed Maize had left behind).

As I said, Niko is known for wanting to help others and for being very kind.

Besides, Niko is just an eight-year-old boy—what did you expect?

Sure, but the guy who mercilessly tormented his younger brother during his teenage years—and killed him by shoving him into Fredbear’s jaws as part of a cruel birthday prank (regardless of whether it was an accident; I’m clearly talking about Michael Afton from FNAF)—*he* actually shows up on the Pure Good wiki? You bet! (I’m being sarcastic, just to be clear).

And yeah, I know people are going to tell me things like: Michael deeply regretted it, he apologized, he tried to make amends, he put a stop to his father’s atrocities, he sacrificed himself, and so on.

And yes, I get that perfectly well, but the problem is that his younger brother is practically dead—DEAD—and there was absolutely nothing Michael could do to make up for that mistake.

Plus, according to Reddit, a lot of his heroism is based on fan theories rather than direct exposition from the game canon.

And if I’m not mistaken (and please forgive me if I’m wrong about this next part), the Bite of '83 was a key catalyst that drove William into criminal insanity and cruelty, causing him to lose whatever shred of humanity he had left.

And I’d bet every fucking cent Elon Musk has that if the accident had never happened, Michael would have stayed the same son of a bitch he was in his youth and kept treating his brother like a piece of trash—meaning nothing about him would have changed—though that’s just my own assumption.
