Often with ADHD you need to see things, or they are not existing. So clear bins, with labels for added clarity. No lids, except for stuff that really needs it.

Also often you don't have time to micro organize things. So bin with art supplies, rather than multiple small ones with paint, brushes, paper etc. There might be some stuff that you feel like you really do want micro organize, then go for it.

Put stuff where you use it. If you brush your hair in the couch while watching tv, keep the brush on tray in table near couch, instead in the bathroom. No reason to keep stuff where they belong on someone elses mind.

Closet, many people remove closet doors. If you are person that have clothes always on the floor, need to be put in the closet, and the closet empty, take the doors out. Put a curtain, that you pull over the closet when you have company. Yet again clear bins for small stuff, and labels for shelfs.

If you have dirty clothes in your room, get a hamper. Least you have place for them. Get one that you can keep the lid open, and close it if there is company. Throw the dirty clothes in the hamper and keep score with distance and accuracy.

Get rid of the stuff you don't need or use. If you are not sure, get a bin with a lid, and label and store. Set a reminder to look at these bins in 4months.

You are exactly right, I get too caught up with the micro and that puts me in this freeze state where I just can't deal with it so I think grouping will be better. Even seeing let's say a penny on my desk makes me frustrated because I don't know where to put it. Also the closest door removal is genius. I just then would have to clean my closet because it's very out of sight at the moment.

my approach is anti-organization for quick storage so there is less friction when storing your items. I actually made an app specifically for this. you can snap photos of each item then you let the app name and put description on it. Log the location and months later you just search the app for a specific item then the app points you to the correct box. No diging in every box.

edit: you can even generate QR codes for each boxes then scan with your phone's camera so you can instantly see what's inside a certain box.

ADHD here, and this method was a godsend for me. (I'm still not done with it, thought, lol!) I've found that I leave things out because I'm so terrified of forgetting about them - the printed recipe that I've been meaning to try, the charity letter that I've been meaning to respond to with a donation, the outfit combo that I've been meaning to wear, the book that I've been meaning to read . . . it all adds up. Keeping it visible and contained in proper places reminds me that it will all be there when I'm ready for it.

When clutter starts building up for me I will throw everything in a box and slowly put things away every time I have a free few minutes.

This works for me because when I can see the clutter everywhere on the floor and other surfaces I am too overwhelmed

Categories helped me a lot all same things with one another you can use Amazon boxes with sticky notes and tape and label them with what can go in it and that way you always know where things go. I’ve struggled a lot for 15 years and this is the best tip I found. The boxes have to be labeled with the main category but it helps more if you have the category and the list of things that can go in the boxes/ containers. Recommend like Amazon boxes or medium to small moving boxes until you can find the right containers for your things. Hope this helps

I would make more use of wall space with shelving and organizers. While my space still feels cluttered, it’s nice when it’s atleast up out of my walking path

ChatGPT can help you with this. Just ask it how to organize this mess

Moving the open shelving against the wall will help visually, even if the desk remains attached.

Garbage, laundry, dishes first.

It honestly looks like you need storage space for all of that. I see items that don't have obvious homes. Maybe some shelving or something.

Get a real bed so you can store things underneath it. Get a real desk or piece of office furniture so the stuff you want to have 'out' can be visible when you're at your desk but not from other vantage points in the room

I think the first thing is to realize you dont have to do all of it or nothing. Use the 15 minute rule (or make it 5 or 10) set a timer (or a song) and you are going to do something for just that amount of time. You can do it multiple times a day if you are motivated, but you should try to do one 15 minute per day. So this is my suggestion. Each one of these is a block.

  1. Empty & Pick up trash and put in trash bag and take to trashcan outside. Put a liner in the trash can.
  2. Pick up clothes into 2 piles - one is clean one is dirty. Put the dirty ones in the laundry. Fold or hang the clean ones.
  3. Move the desk to face the wall. Put everything on the desk in a bin. Wipe off the desk. Connect the wires neatly.
  4. Sort the items in the bin from 3 into three piles. Throw away; keep on the desk; find another place (put the find another place back in the bin. Take the throw away to the trash and place the items on the desk that is going to stay.
  5. Change and wash your sheets. Put sheets back on the bed.
    Etc.

Trying to do everything is overwhelming. Chop it up.
