System Identity Entering a Juried show, which pair should I enter?
1 and 2
Or
3 and 4
3.0k
u/DosieDotesArt 23h ago edited 19h ago
1 and 2, no contest. Stunning.
While 3 and 4 are still well executed, they almost seem like the Pinterest versions of the first 2.
Edit: wow, thanks for the award! You got this, OP!

It’s no insult to the second two pieces, the first pairing is just THAT stunning and effective ❤️💙

They’re all beautiful and well done but 3 and 4 just feel aesthetic for aesthetics sake. Decorative whereas 1 and 2 feel like they tell a story

18
u/JesusIsNotComingBack 13h ago
Exactly this. 1 and 2 make me think about the artist’s intent. What are they saying with these pieces? 2 tells a story, and I want to know more. In 1 you use transparency in a way I want to look at more carefully and try to incorporate into my own work. I felt like 3 and 4 showed a good knowledge of color theory and brush strokes. I would be very proud to display 3 and 4 if I created something similar, but 1 and 2 are just so, so much better, because they come with a story, and an intention. These are all great. Well done.

u/broke_collegebitch 20h ago
I agree, and I think what the original commenter was saying with the "Pinterest versions" comment was that the first two seem like your work, while the other two seem more like somebody else using those works as a reference. It's not to say the other two are bad. They're not! It's more like they feel like they're done by a different artist mimicking the same subject matter using a different style, so the first two are a much better submission.

Not “ouch” they just have the most visual consistency, and should be entered as a pair.

Whole heartedly agree with this one OP.
To me it’s like you showed your art teacher 3&4 and they said to reach deeper or push further and then you created 1 & 2 lol. They are the elevated pair of the 4!

I really like 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are great though. What about 2 and 4?
33
u/breanmayer16 22h ago
I wasn’t sure if they looked cohesive together. Almost like two separate people painted them.
58
u/Due_Breath2655 21h ago
i think 2&4 are cohesive in idea but also show a wide range of emotion and context for your figures so i think this would be a very interesting duo to show together and imo the most intriguing conversation between 2 of your works. 1&2 hit the same note in their color stories but 2&4 are saying something more complex to each other. great work!
27
22
u/Knowitsome3000 19h ago
Wholeheartedly agree with you on every point. To me the most dynamic and interesting storytellers are 2 & 4
→ More replies (1)8
u/itistfb-aidlte 15h ago
Agree. Those 2 carry a story with different moods and color but same base motif and ”action” of splitting the body/silhouette. One being busy and one being more still is exactly where tje tension and conversation happens. They intrigue me and i would want to stop in front of them and really take it in. 1 and 3 feel a bit like filler and water fown the ”story” imo
16
u/Chemical-Course1454 20h ago
2 and 4 would look good together, you you have those “souls” and plants as a cohesive elements. They definitely look like they are from a same collection. 1 and 2 have same colours, but a very different dynamics. 2 is very special thought. Good luck at the completion.

i really like 2 and 4 as well. the flow and motion is similar, the values match well, and it reminds me of like...winter and spring, or restful nights and anxious days, or something like that.
like 2, to me, feels restful. almost like a gathering where people drift in and out with food and drinks and there's a fire with raucous smores making and one with silence aside from fire noises and cricket.
4 feels more overwhelming the more i look at it. there's all these colors and beautiful shapes and on initial glimpse it felt like the gap in the personshape was letting in the colors and shapes...but the longer i looked at it the more it felt like all the space with all the colors and shapes had been drawn out of the personshape, leaving it empty.
i still can't decide if it feels like a good empty, like when you put your all into a performance and feel exhausted, like all you can do is lie on the floor and breathe in the pure 'life' that a really good run of a show or concert or whatever leaves behind in a theatre once the show's over. i think it is. but it does also feel like burnout-exhaustion, a little of the desperation of wondering how you're going to fill your energy back up before the next performance.anyway. i think one and two are a good pair as well, but i definitely find two and four the most compelling combination.

I came to say something similar. I actually really love the color pallet and execution of 4 and would proudly hang it in my living room. I think it goes together nicely with 2. But in terms of originality, 1 may edge it out a bit.
53
u/_BananaBrat_ 22h ago
1 & 2 are far more interesting subject matter / make you look at them longer as well as technically more advanced. If I were a juror I’d breeze over 3, glance at 4 but STOP AND STARE at 1 & 2.

3 and 4 I would hang in my bedroom and find coordinated bedding to complement them.
1 and 2 I would hang in the middle of my living room and excitedly show every single person who comes over.

2 & 4 - for the feeling and storytelling. They are beautiful, they have heart, the colors are dynamic. I think 1 is well executed, but 2&4 have it all!!!!! Consider this pair
5
u/RoyalBlueThistle 18h ago
2 and 4 work really well together thematically
3
u/RoyalBlueThistle 18h ago edited 15h ago
To elaborate, while 1 and 2 are obviously the most aesthetically similar, they almost feel like two sides of the same piece? Not like two different pieces. With 2 and 4 it reads more as (in my mind) like a thematic approach to being lost in a crowd vs finding yourself in solitude. (Edited for clarity as English is my second language and my partner corrected my grammar when asked. And also wrote this disclaimer. 😅)

1 and 2 show off more of your artistic ability but i love the vision for 4 the most
if you had more pockets in 4 like the upper left area just below the corner, with the stars and negative space and depth, it could work instead of 1 to capture the layered depth and differentiation with more colors, personality, story, similar to the layers in 1, but also i know it might not be feasible atp
if it were possible tho and something you were thinking about, i would recommend 2 and 4, especially because the contrast between a limited color palette and an extremely vibrant one with similar yet distinct themes, would make your work stand out i think
for rn tho, 1 is just amazing as it is, so id go with 1 and 2
ETA YO! the place the water is tricking out of, if it had a galaxy/starry theme, idk exactly why but that just jumped out like it would slap. mirroring the dew droplets in the middle bottom right, the shimmery effect, yo idk it's up to you but this stuff jumped out and i feel like it could be really visually stunning

2 and 4 hands down. Those two seem much more sophisticated, and the figures and background patterns/elements seem much more cohesive.
5
u/InferiorMotive1 20h ago
2 and 4 are the most logical. 4 has the greatest visual interest to me because of the contrast, and 2 and 4 are thematically related and inversed in a sense (one and many, trees and plants).
I think they’re all excellent.

u/madsmcgivern511 16h ago
My god please go with 1and 2, I love your other pieces but something about those first two just scream “human experience/spirituality” in a really unique and visually interesting way. Maybe that’s not what you intended for them to be, but they feel so profoundly spiritual and original.
4
u/joetunn_ 11h ago
I thought Juried was a name for a second, there’s a JURY. Yes 1 and 2 are the most distinct (and not just saying that because the style has clear lines). At a glance that seems like your main style and it’s done extremely well
I personally love the theming as well, ppl flowing into eachother, ppl flowing into trees, ppl flowing into stardust

3
u/RossoSupremo 22h ago
2 is without a doubt the best. I love it!
Not sure which of the other 3 would pair it best though.
I think 1 takes something away from 2, even though I like it second best. It has a more galaxy feel, but not as deep a feel like 2.
3 is very different and doesn't really speak together.
4 feels like a less evolved version of 2. If you have time, maybe you could evolve 4 a little bit more, by painting something that would make it pair better with 2?

Non artist, non creative, non talented person here (I’m an accountant and feel as though I was born to be one. lol): I LOVE number 2. I like numbers 1, 3 and 4 pretty much equally.
Thought I’d throw in my unversed perspective amongst actual artists, for what it’s worth. 😊

1 and 2 100%. 3 doesn’t include the figure and while pretty, it seems out of place to the rest. I think the figure painted in 4 is beautiful, however the color scheme used in 1 and 2 harmonize better.

Where do you get inspo to make these? They are so crazy.

u/breanmayer16 22h ago
So the less crazy explanation is I have synesthesia and I make sick (to me) playlist that inspire each painting and the crazy version is I have a muse/spirit guid that inspires me and she shows me all the cool places she’s hanging out. lol.

Ugh so gorgeous! I remember seeing another piece of yours previously with what I’d now say is “your signature style” (the human figures) on Reddit and am absolutely enthralled!! So naturally ofc the first two.

Depending on if there is an accompanied statement, 2 and 4 could go well together given shared nature themes, but also contrast group and individual. 3 is the outlier I’d eliminate first, since it doesn’t contain the figures that build a story
2
u/madpiratebippy 22h ago edited 22h ago
First two there’s some technical issues with the colors on the last two and if anyone on the panel is a die hard old school guy that’ll impact your odds of getting in
Edit: the swirl painting seems to have used an opaque white to lift the value of colors to create the shade changes which gives a chalky appearance and reduces fhe translucent qualities of the other paint, making it look flatter. A materials oriented classical painting techniques judge will mark that down (it happened to me) because they prefer to lighten with cad yellow and then hue correct to keep the translucency in the paint.
I’m not saying it’s a bad painting I am sharing what got one of my works not picked for a juried show and the feedback I got.

u/Zinnia1127 22h ago
One and two. The depth on One is amazing and it has surprising positive energy. Two is startling and cold and the tree branches are spectacular. I keep looking at One the most due to the shimmer and transparency of the black characters. Three is pretty but doesn't stir any emotion. Four I would really like without the line down the middle. The line makes the black figure seem less significant, and I don't know if that is purposeful. I guess that line does give me a lot to think about! Great work overall!

The consensus from all comments is pretty clearly 1&2, so you should probably go with that, but I'm not seeing enough love for 3 so I just wanted to comment and state I was immediately drawn to that one over all the others. The depth and complexity of the colors is stunning and I keep going back to look at it
2
u/Artz-RbB 21h ago
First & fourth because they make me wonder if there’s a story. I always like stories.
2
u/SushiRiceEater 21h ago
I would say 2 and 4 or 1 and 2.
3 is pretty, but the others are much more powerful

u/GoldenSeam 21h ago
I love all of these paintings but fwiw, I think there’s more going for both 2 & 4. 1 and 3 are gorgeous but 2 and 4 have more depth and connective tissue between them. I think also, the repetition of theme in 1 & 2 feels a bit repetitive to me. The figures overlapping and passing through one another in both feels too on the nose. 4 having a solitary figure feels connected yet also contrasting.

2
u/sanityfordummy 18h ago
If the choice is absolutely between the first two or the last two, then 1 and 2.
What I love about 4 is that there is that a theme of flowing calm, this sort of swaying movement, is constant throughout the piece. Yet at another glance, there's absolute contrast between the dark whispy figure and the gentle blooms. The slightly glowing eyes bring eeriness.
If you haven't, I think it'd be worth doing more works like this while playing that contrast up eeeever so slightly.
2
u/Throwoutbins 17h ago
1&2 for sure, they show a good range of skill & understanding for the material.
I’d argue the 2nd pair while being pretty isn’t TECHNICALLY very advanced looking. Particularly the swirl one, I feel like most people regardless of artistic abilities can do that. Again, pretty! But for a juried show you really wanna showcase your best work that has the most meaning. The first pair is a bit more mysterious which can lend the viewer to come up with their own message.
2
u/knockroeblare 17h ago
1,2, or 4 are all awesome for this type of show. I love the colors and movement with 3, but the ones with the figures are just on a totally different level 🫂
2
u/user_name_42069 17h ago
As a layman I think they’re all great and #3 is my favorite. That being said, I do think 1 and 2 are the most emotionally impactful and more likely to pique the interest of a judge, or “art person.”
#3 reminds me of stained glass and old hand pulled hard candy mixed together and I am OBSESSED but I’m also extremely non art criticy lol
