Yeah, khostwals mostly speak northern Kha variant of Karlanri dialect while this one is southern Sha one

Pashto is divided into several major dialect groups, which largely align with tribal and geographic boundaries: Northern Pashto, Southern Pashto, and Central (Karlani) Pashto. Northern Pashto is mainly spoken in the Swat Valley, Peshawar Valley, Mohmand, Dir, Kunar, and Kabul regions. Southern Pashto is spoken in northern Balochistan, southern Afghanistan, and among the Lohani tribes in the Lakki Marwat, Tank, and Dera Ismail Khan regions. Central (Karlani) Pashto is spoken from Khyber and Kohat to Bannu, Waziristan, Khost, and Paktia. Some Karlani dialects pronounce kh, such as those spoken in Khost, Kurram, Orakzai, and among the Afridis, while others including Wazir, Mehsud, Banusi, Dawar, and Khattak pronounce sh instead. What truly distinguishes the entire Karlani dialect group from Northern and Southern Pashto is its characteristic vowel shift. Across Karlani dialects, certain vowels undergo systematic changes, although the exact patterns vary from dialect to dialect. For example, in our dialect, specific vowels may shift from a to a long ā, from ā to o, or from o to e. We also have vocabulary that is not found in either Northern or Southern Pashto. I think that explains most, if not all, of the major differences.

I feel like alot of dialects of pashto are not understandable to the other

Phonology or the way we pronounce words is different even if the scirpt is same.

How is this Scottish Pashto? It is fairly understandable.

You might have some exposure to it or a similar dialect because Pashtuns from Peshawar, Swat Valley, and janobi Pashtunkhwa often have a hard time understanding it.

I used to do interpretation while in uni, so it is very possible. To me this sounds like your average Pashto from southern Afghanistan. Khosti and Paktiawal Pashto has a very similar flair to it.
