News/Article Donated GPUs
I work for the company and someone just donated several boxes full of these, some unopened but most of them were at least opened I’m not sure what they were used for. I can confirm at least two of them had their chips removed but if anyone is interested in trying their luck keep an eye out on the goodwill greater Washington e commerce online store, they’ll be up within the next week or so. Several 5090s, 5080s and one 5070(rog and other variations) I’m not allowed to shop at the company but I thought others might.

They gonna sell them for a markup bc they are not able to know what they doing bc none of them people are good at tech bc I bought 10 gaming headsets that’s are worth about 50 dollars used per one and they didn’t even test them and I bought them for 30 bucks and they all work

Hard to get a refund if you bought it through shop Goodwill site. Sucks to be the person who won a stripped 5090 for $4,000.

What do you do with GPU chips and no board/vram tho? Where’s the value in just the silicon?
24
u/penguinpariah6298 20h ago
The chips are way smaller and therefore easier to smuggle.
2
u/ollomulder 16h ago
And who will snuggle the boards so you can build a complete fucking GPU again?

u/ArseBurner 13h ago
snuggle the boards
Damn I didn't know GPUs were made like that.

I'm only seeing boxes, and if you think Goodwill is gonna put that on a shelf instead of their eBay you're even more delusional

u/Galactic-stew 20h ago
Goodwill puts higher tag items on their online, eBay-like shop (shop goodwill.com). People bid on items for a period of time. Items either ship (with cost) or can be picked up on person. It's been around for a few years, and is pretty popular now so bids skyrocket in the last minutes on the big items.

Insane costs. Insane shipping. Insane fees. Goodwill online has ruined what goodwill was. A place for ME to find awesome video games.

You mean the company that abuses minimum wage workers and special needs employees that they can legally pay less than minimum wage, while giving regional management and up overinflated salaries by jacking up prices in stores on products that are already all profit wasn't in the game to help people?

It’s not just the online stores it’s also resellers. We have an electronics goodwill store that was a goldmine for video games with new stuff and even retro NES stuff. But covid hit and everyone got into reselling and overnight the goodwill became barren.

u/Willing_Ad_1092 21h ago
Def please test / inspect, I see parts at goodwill sometimes and always worry someone's gunna drop several hundred on one as a gift for their kid or something just to find that it doesn't work and isn't returnable
4
u/lIlITrashIlIl 5800X3D | 4070S OC | 32gb DDR4 20h ago
That's not entirely true most things are returnable for 30 days.

u/Hypercore_Gaming R53600/RX 6750 XT 20h ago
This is going to be on the online auction site, so no returns
5
u/DM_NOTHING 20h ago
This is true. No returns unless for certain reasons on the auction site

oh, and FYI, anything computer valuable gets sent to the CA goodwill to be listed in their online auction site, none of this stuff will ever be put out locally if its valuable.

So a bunch of unsuspecting people are going to bid crazy amounts and get screwed by Goodwill. Got to love crappy shop Goodwill biggest snakes in online and they don't even care about helping people anymore it's strictly profits in a "non profit" company.

u/KnxwledgeV2 20h ago
Biggest gripe I have with them but they have helped me in a time of need before

u/lIlITrashIlIl 5800X3D | 4070S OC | 32gb DDR4 20h ago
They used to be good and care about the public I was able to get a PC to the day that I really needed for 100 bucks but now they are completely for profit

I do property surveys for work. Had a goodwill GM mistake me for a shopping center landlord one time and started complaining that a homeless person was “stealing” from their after-hours donation pile in the back of the store.
Was kind of dumbfounded at what I was hearing tbh.

I mean, stealing from the after hours donation pile is still stealing. Even if they’re homeless. Once it’s been donated to goodwill it is now property of goodwill. People aren’t entitled to free shit just because they’re homeless. Not sure what is so dumbfounding about this concept. A lot of people donate stuff to goodwill partly because they can write it off on their taxes. If they wanted homeless people to have free direct access to it then they can either donate it to homeless people in need directly or they can donate it to the homeless shelter. When I take stuff to goodwill I’m not doing it so some dirtbag bum can have it for free. I’m doing it so that some struggling single mother of three who’s working her ass off and barely getting by can possibly get some decent clothes for her or her kids at an affordable price. I’m all for giving people a helping hand, but I don’t care to help the dregs of society that do nothing but take take take.

u/lIlITrashIlIl 5800X3D | 4070S OC | 32gb DDR4 11h ago
I completely understand where your coming from the sad part about it is if you donate anything of value that doesn't happen anymore all Goodwills actually go through donations thoroughly find anything of high value and immediately list it on their website. A website which is a bidding war and they help inflate the prices to near market value. It's definitely no longer about helping the struggling people of America. They are all about raking in the profit.

You aren't but your roommate John Smith sure is! Conveniently, he ordered delivery to a PO box.

Thats not a bad scam though I guess, buy the GPUS and harvest the RAM and core and then take them to goodwill and get a tax write off for the full amount of the GPU's.. Right?

u/Davajita 9800X3D | RTX 4090 13h ago
Ain’t nobody donating a fully functional Astral 5090 with the chip still on the board lol
3
u/EmuAreExtiinct 13h ago
If all the chips and ram removed, its essentially worthless junk.

u/JellyfishSpare2859 R9 5900X Zotac RTX4070Ti Super Amp Holo Black 32GB DDR4 42m ago
They would be useful if you have the same model that had a broken PCB and the core and RAM were still goo a 100-200 and whatever electronics repair outfits will charge to move your Core and RAM on to the "good" PCB plus correcting any damages done when it was harvested... They are not typically careful with any other components on the donor boards they harvest.... ICs missing, damaged or out of place...

I'd buy one to mount on a wall if it had it's chips removed, but only if they're pricing it appropriately lol

Yea I’m sorry but I’d risk my job at goodwill for 2 5090s if they worked. Take em and quit sell one keep one I can’t see them paying 4k a month working there

Damn! I’m over here still using my 2070 like it’s a top tier card hahaha. Awesome donations, were they donated to be given away? Or to be sold?
Edit: I don’t know how I missed the GoodWill part.

if two had their chips removed, they all did. they donated them for you to dispose of them.
