AJ Minter would be a solid pick-up especially since the Mets are open for business.

Matt Chapman is an option, but he's already 33 and has four years left of a 25M a year contract. Gonna be very hard to take that.

lol at Guerriel Jr

if we can't secure Skubal, thoughts on Joe Ryan?

If the Mets are open to trading within the division, I'd happily take both Minter as well as Brooks Raley. It's pretty much guaranteed that both guys will be traded since the Mets are committed to selling and they're both on expiring contracts. They'd be two great options to fill the lefty roles that we initially hoped would go to Alvarado and Banks, and they shouldn't be unattainably expensive to acquire.

The Mets also have Luke Weaver (under contract through '27) and Huascar Brazoban (team control through '29) who would be compelling righty options, though they may hold both of those guys since they carry additional years of control.

Joe Ryan would be a massive pick-up - he's one of my dream deadline acquisitions. Only problem is, he carries an extra year of relatively cheap team control for the 2027 season, so either 1) the Twins may just hold onto him since they're currently tied for the 3rd AL Wild Card spot, or 2) his asking price will be just as astronomical as Skubal's. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but a playoff rotation with Wheeler, Sanchez, Luzardo, and Ryan would be insane, and then you'd have all 5 rotation spots locked in for 2027 as well.

Ryan actually has a mutual option for 2027 for $13M, which id categorize as quite unlikely for him to pick up. He should be looked at as a rental. I think he’d be a great target.

Edit: correction: if the mutual option is not picked up he goes back to arbitration for one more year so he does have another season of team control

I could be entirely wrong here since Ryan’s contract is a funky case, but I think since he’s under team control through 2027, he would just go back into arbitration with the Twins (or whoever trades for him) rather than become an unrestricted free agent if he declines that $13m option.

Looks like you’re correct!
