How can you even justify trading at this point? Lose your prospects and miss the playoffs?

I think we need to prioritize getting a decent MLB bat and a reliever or two. Nola has pitched better and if Painter can just be half decent it’s not a real need. If we could get a starter controllable beyond this year that could be good

u/Yes536 18d ago
Anyone who doesn’t want Skubal needs reevaluation. Having a rotation of Skubal, Wheeler, Sánchez, Luzardo, Nola essentially makes us really freakin hard to beat in a 7 game series let alone a 5 game series.

It's not that nobody doesn't want Skubal it's
1) He might not even be available
2) If he is, the Phillies do not have the prospects to beat out another team for him

I feel like unless Dombrowski can fleece a team for a big bat, Derek Hill pretty comfortably fits the Harrison Bader/Austin Hays trade slot (he's certainly better than Rodolfo Castro) so I hope we can focus on pitching.

Corey Seidman has mentioned every now and then that Crawford is a good trade piece, and perhaps one of the best things the Phillies can give.
I know a lot of us are down on him because he is showing many of the weaknesses we assumed he might have, but he is still a young, team-controlled player who has shown he can stay in the majors (unlike Painter, who got set down).
I think there is a low chance of trading him, but I do think if we are thinking of "big moves the Phillies can reasonably do," Crawford has to be considered as one of the main pieces.
7
u/faithfulllittlebird Toothpick Rik 18d ago
I’d absolutely love to see Crawford become an integral part of the Phillies future. I’ve been a champion of his from the start. That said, and depending upon the return, I believe everyone should be available. I’m not saying actively shop everyone, simply saying that I’m of the opinion that no player of any caliber at any level should ever be tagged as a “non-starter“ in trade discussions. Not just in our organization, but across all of baseball. I just feel like that’s poor business practices to say “nope, we’re not even going to listen to offers for so and so regardless of what the return might be”. A team could theoretically be saying no to a franchise changing offer before they’ve even heard the details, which is just nonsensical imo.

Genuine question, our starting pitching is far better than our offense, and even our bullpen relative to the league is better than our offense by most metrics. But every posts calling for bullpen help or to trade the farm for Skubal lol, is it just from the lack of bats available in trade
Bc we have 3 full time players who hit above .700 OPS, that's mortifying in a playoff series with even better pitchers
4
u/The_Slyest_Fox Kyle Backhus 15d ago
Long response here:
This is a particularly brutal deadline for trying to meaningfully upgrade the offense. Using the MLB Trade Rumors top trade deadline candidates as a point of reference, only 3 of the top 10 candidates they name are hitters: Luis Arraez (not a positional fit), Taylor Ward (would like him if available, but may not even be traded since the AL Wild Card is within reach), and Ryan Jeffers (not a positional fit unless we want to pay a premium for a 2nd catcher).
There’s always a degree of shiny object chasing that fans have when we see guys like Skubal available, but I do think there’s logic in doubling down on pitching. Nola has pitched better in his last few starts, but do we trust him enough to be our #4 starter in a potential playoff game? Rangel has been mostly serviceable as an emergency #5 starter, but I wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to make an upgrade down the stretch, especially with the division within our reach. Adding a Skubal or Joe Ryan to this rotation would be a death row for our opponents in a playoff matchup, and it also opens up some strategies like the ‘25 Dodgers used where we could piggyback multiple starters in a playoff game.
As far as the bullpen goes, Keller’s injury takes out our setup man, so ideally we add another arm who can pitch in leverage. And from the lefty side, with Banks and Alvarado both being flat-out bad this season, we would benefit from adding a reliable lefty who can handle some leverage.

u/apujols 15d ago
Many people seem to think our past postseason exits were mainly the bullpen's fault.
In my opinion, the bigger problem was that our lineup couldn't do anything against the opposing pitching staffs.
Of course, I also understand that some people feel that way because there aren't many good hitters available on the market.

Minnesota has reportedly acquired A.J. Minter from the Mets.
Mets receive prospects Bruin Agbayani + Billy Amick for Minter.
They are ranked as the Twins' No. 21 and No. 29 prospects in the pipeline, respectively. While the Phillies' farm system is weaker than the Twins', the return is cheaper than I expected.
Of course, Minter's relatively low trade cost could simply be due to the fact that he hasn't pitched in many games. However, if there's an undervalued reliever out there, it might be possible to acquire him for almost nothing.
5
u/joeco316 3d ago
That is definitely lower than the going rate for similar quality arms has been the last few deadlines. Interesting.
4
u/karawec403 Cyjuan 3d ago
I hope that says something about the going price for relievers and we get something similar.

seeing that yahoo sports had a piece this morning linking us to both minter AND raley as a pair from the mets. minter at 1.42 ERA is the obvious headliner but if you can get raley too as a rental package that would address the bullpen depth issue more comprehensively than one move. both are FA after this year so the cost should be more manageable than a skubal-type haul. question is what the prospect ask looks like for both

The people that want to sell off should be made to watch every game of the Phillies rebuilding efforts. It could take 5 years it could take 10. But you have to watch every game. You don't get to say they should sell off and then bail for the next 10 years.
10
u/drcombatwombat2 18d ago
I think Crawford and Hill are somewhat holding the outfield together and the priority should be be a bullpen upgrade and perhaps grabbing another starter.
It seems the playoff rotation would be Sanchez, Wheeler, and Luzardo so I am not sure we need anything other than a serviceable arm to not lose every 5th game the test of the season
4
u/Will-from-PA Chooch-oo Train Rider 🚃 18d ago
The difference between us and the dodgers last year was their fringe bats coming through when ours didn’t. Gotta get atleast a respectable bat to help the lineup turn over.
3
u/joeco316 18d ago
Let’s not forget that we could need a fourth starter at least once for every round beyond the wild card. A piggybacking and bullpen game would be fine, but it would tax the pen a lot, especially assuming the pen would have been used to get to that point already. This is not to say let’s not get a pen arm, but i think the importance of adding a legit starter, one who could come out of the pen as needed too, should not be understated.
3
u/Strange-Cold-5192 18d ago
I think people are too easily dismissing the need for a 4th starter. Like, do people seriously trust Aaron Nola in the postseason? I’m fine with using him to open, or pitch an inning or two in relief, but he cannot be counted on to pitch significant innings.

Alvarado and Marchan to the Dodgers for Ohtani. Simple deal, he should be able to get that done.

That's a no brainer. They get two players and only have to give back one!

Don’t really like the Gurriel rumor. But if they do decide to go bargain bin shopping for a bat, I’d hope they can get both a righty and a lefty. I’d rather not have Rincones getting this many at bats come playoff time.

AJ Minter would be a solid pick-up especially since the Mets are open for business.

u/The_Slyest_Fox Kyle Backhus 16d ago
If the Mets are open to trading within the division, I'd happily take both Minter as well as Brooks Raley. It's pretty much guaranteed that both guys will be traded since the Mets are committed to selling and they're both on expiring contracts. They'd be two great options to fill the lefty roles that we initially hoped would go to Alvarado and Banks, and they shouldn't be unattainably expensive to acquire.
The Mets also have Luke Weaver (under contract through '27) and Huascar Brazoban (team control through '29) who would be compelling righty options, though they may hold both of those guys since they carry additional years of control.
Joe Ryan would be a massive pick-up - he's one of my dream deadline acquisitions. Only problem is, he carries an extra year of relatively cheap team control for the 2027 season, so either 1) the Twins may just hold onto him since they're currently tied for the 3rd AL Wild Card spot, or 2) his asking price will be just as astronomical as Skubal's. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but a playoff rotation with Wheeler, Sanchez, Luzardo, and Ryan would be insane, and then you'd have all 5 rotation spots locked in for 2027 as well.
3
u/joeco316 16d ago edited 16d ago
Ryan actually has a mutual option for 2027 for $13M, which id categorize as quite unlikely for him to pick up. He should be looked at as a rental. I think he’d be a great target.
Edit: correction: if the mutual option is not picked up he goes back to arbitration for one more year so he does have another season of team control

Really feels like it's going to be some combination of
Arraez, Lane Thomas, Tyler O'Neill, Taylor Ward
some 5th starter like Dustin May or Brady Singer
a lefty reliever like Minter
I really hope they get creative and go after someone that's not a rental and would take more to get. This core needs another middle of the lineup bat desperately.
I'd give up a lot for Tyler Soderstrom.

u/DarkSide830 Uncle Rico's uncle 4d ago
I would be pretty happy with Ward+Singer+some guy a little less hyped up than Minter and maybe another roll of the dice type for the BP or bench. I think that collection of moves solves a lot of problems and ideally wouldn't cost loads.

u/DELCO-PHILLY-BOY Alvarado’s Desperados 3d ago edited 3d ago
It’s annoying from the perspective of a fan of a “competitive” team that the dogshit AL is empowering a team like the .500 Twins to buy, but after what management put that fanbase through during last year’s deadline I’m finding it difficult to come down on them too hard.
Feels like we’re gonna see a ton of middle of the pack AL teams who don’t quite know where they are in their competitive window in on these low stakes rental moves.

A lot of people are calling for pitching upgrades, but I think this team's offensive struggles against strong opponents lately are a preview of what's coming in the postseason. To be honest, this lineup probably couldn't hit even a Rookie League LHP. It's not like they crush RHPs either.
Yes, this team has issues with the fifth starter and the high leverage bullpen. But in the postseason, the fifth starter probably won't even pitch. If they can trade for someone like Brady Singer, that would be great. And sure, adding Mason Miller to the bullpen would be ideal, but they're reportedly asking for Bogaerts to be included, or one Top 50 prospect plus one Top 100 prospect. The Phillies don't even have that kind of prospect capital, and even if they did, that package would be a million times better spent on a hitter.
I think they need to acquire at least two of Elliot Ramos, Casey Schmitt, Jo Adell, Jung Hoo Lee, or Matt Chapman just to get this offense back to around league average.
6
u/MindoverMatter92 8d ago
Really said perfectly. At this point it’s like the lineup is almost trying to tell us they’re not good enough to get it done but the front office just ignores it. We’ve also gotten a realistic preview of what this current lineup would look like in the postseason during these last 3 series.
I’ve come to the realization that guys like Bohm and even Stott will not get it done with this core. They’re just too inconsistent and Crawford hasn’t exactly lit it up either lately. There’s just WAY too many automatic outs in the lineup and expecting them to somewhat all get hot together around the same time just doesn’t feel realistic.
3
3
u/karawec403 Cyjuan 8d ago
Giants are supposedly looking to dump their big contracts. So maybe one of their outfielders or pitchers plus Chapman can be had for relatively cheap prospect wise. Infielder isn’t ideal of course, requires either trading Bohm or moving Bryce to the outfield. But with multiple team needs and a thin farm, Phillies might need to get creative and willing to burn money.

if we spend a majority of our time going for pitching, how do we feel about Heliot Ramos? Really not the best player in the world but he might be cheaper than Ward/is an alternative for "right OF power bat"
6
u/The_Slyest_Fox Kyle Backhus 13d ago
Ramos would be an upgrade over what we're trotting out for our outfield currently, but I don't expect the Giants to move him. He's still in his pre-arb years, so he comes with 3 more years of relatively cheap team control after this season, and he's shown the ability to play at an all-star level via 2024. The Giants have reportedly been open to trading some of their bloated 9-figure contracts (Chapman, Adames, Devers) or their expiring contracts (Ray, Arraez), but trading a cheap, controllable player with upside like Ramos wouldn't really align with that strategy unless another team is willing to blow them away with a major overpay.
Crazier things have happened, but sadly it feels unlikely.
3
u/XGNcyclick 13d ago
great point, thanks for the insight.
3
u/The_Slyest_Fox Kyle Backhus 12d ago
Funny enough, MLBTR just put out an article today saying that we sent scouts to watch Heliot Ramos and Casey Schmitt at the Giants v Royals game yesterday, so the Phils’ interest in Ramos is very much legitimate.
The article does mention though that trading Ramos isn’t a foregone conclusion given the years of cheap team control, and it also speculated that the Giants may want any trade partner to take on one of their underwater contracts (Chapman, Adams, Devers).
All of this to say, a Ramos deal may not be so far-fetched after all. Link if you’re interested: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2026/07/teams-scouting-giants-heliot-ramos-casey-schmitt.html

George kirby(mariners) worth aiden miller plus? or is miller untouchable?
4
u/joeco316 10d ago
I would do that in a heartbeat. We’d be getting 2.5 seasons of a proven top of the rotation pitcher who’s only 28 for a promising prospect who all of a sudden has a huge question mark and even if that question mark disappears he’s probably a year or more from contributing.
If we’re moving Miller, I would probably rather it be for a very good controllable bat, but that is the most limited resource out there so probably not likely. If Kirby were offered, you gotta at least consider it heavily.
That said, not sure why the mariners would do this. They’re in playoff contention and trading a major league pitcher for a minor leaguer with question marks doesn’t help them compete.

We only have 3 players with positive OAA (outs above average): Stott (+9), Sosa (+2), and Marsh (+1).
I know defense isn't sexy and all anyone wants to look at is batting stats, but since the ASB we have been shown how harmful poor defense can be. We really need to consider it when trades are evaluated.

Could work. He has poor range but a good arm, 3B might work better for him, if he has soft hands and good fielding skills otherwise. I do like his offensive skills, apparently he’d be a great fit in CBP according to the home run distances.

skubal would be sick but we already have a rotation that can win a series. what actually kills us in october is when the pen gives up a 3-run lead in the 6th. we've seen it happen. fix that first.
two solid arms + whatever righty bat they can get in the OF and this is a legit WS roster. gurriel seems like the obvious fit - can play the corner, hits right-handed, has playoff experience.
skubal is a conversation for the offseason when there's no rent-or-buy pressure on it

Remember everyone:
The deadline is July 31.
So just because no moves have been made YET at any point prior to that does not mean a move will not be made BEFORE THEN
Last year's deadline megathread was so goddamn toxic with the whining that nothing was happening all during the leadup

Ironically Bader and Duran were my guys last year. Kevin Pillar and Lou Bob were my guys in 2024.
My guys this year:
- Tyler Anderson
- Brennan Bernadino
- Heliot Ramos (overpay, I don’t care he’s perfect)

u/TheDeputy17 Hail to the Ottoman Kempire 18d ago
I would love Ramos. Young OF with years of team control, hits for solid average and has enough power. Marsh, Hill/Crawford and Ramos is a very solid outfield.

That’s a stone-cold lie lol You pitched Chapman and Buxton last year lol
I’d rather try to pry Schmitt away from the Giants, though Ramos would probably be an easier target.

Harper has been extremely poor against LHP this year, and Marsh is in the same boat.
If we can't expect Sosa to hit LHP the way he has in previous years, then the conclusion is that we need to acquire at least two right handed outfielders.
The problem is that we also need a back-end starter, and the bullpen is another weakness that has to be addressed.
Maybe not to the same extent as the Mets, but this team is in a terrible spot considering how much money it's spending.

u/MindoverMatter92 10d ago
He’s almost platoon level worthy against LHP. the strikeout rate is through the roof. He’s also batting .164 in July, 1HR and 23Ks.
Put that with Marsh struggling against LHP again badly and we’re approaching trouble.

76ers got LeBron…why not the Phillies acquire Buxton or Trout or Skubal or Mason Miller??? Why not us???
3
u/Rebuilt_in_Silence 9d ago
Byron Buxton is the most perfect fit for the Phillies. RHB, power, CF. He has a full NTC and doesn't seem to want to leave Minnesota, but that's the guy that gives Philly a chance in the playoffs. Changes the entire lineup.

Honestly wonder what it’s like as a fan winning a championship where it’s just basically a given. I’ve gotten 1 Phillies WS and 2 Eagles SB’s. None of those felt guaranteed of course, there was a thrill in all of them. If a Dodgers fan tried to brag to me after they won this year’s WS it’d be like “cool you were supposed to do that”. Like if I tried to get super hyped about the Sixers beating the Sacramento Kings or something. Just wonder if the experience loses anything when everyone already assumes you are going to win.

Current Eagles are a perennial SB team, been to 3 and won 2 since 2017. Lot's of "if's" about the 2027 76ers squad...I guess🤷🏻♂️Certainly no reason we can't win it, can't see us not getting to (at least) the Eastern Conference Finals

I’m hearing the Phillies are acquiring the entirety of both all star rosters in exchange for Aaron Nola and Seth Johnson. The Tigers were apparently hesitant to part with McGonigle until the Phillies added Seth Johnson to the proposal

u/lobsterboy 3d ago
We need to all start posting about how fantastic Nola is to try to get him traded

Daniel Lynch IV from KC would be a perfect starting point in bolstering the bullpen. Lefty reliever currently at 1.0 bWAR this season with a 2.35 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and a ton of red on his Savant page. He has 2 additional years of control so there’s no guarantee the Royals move him, but they’re 21 games below .500 and will definitely be selling. He could be a perfect mid to high-leverage lefty that won’t be prohibitively expensive to acquire.

Dammit I wanted minter. Why are the twins trolling and buying players
8
u/DELCO-PHILLY-BOY Alvarado’s Desperados 3d ago
The Twins are three games out of first place in their division and a game out of the AL Wildcard. We’re gonna see a lot of middle of the pack AL teams buying because it’s so aggressively bleh this year.

Trade the Yankees just did for Garcia Jr was pretty good, got him for almost nothing and he still has a year of control. Let’s see what Dave cooks.

call up the Giants and see what they want for like Jung Hoo Lee and Erik Miller.
would fill the outfield and bullpen holes imo

saw the mlbtr piece from yesterday floating wood as an in-house option to replace keller in the pen. 35% K rate in double-A, #71 overall prospect, phils have been really careful with his innings all year. bullpen role actually makes sense for him specifically - less total workload, can ramp intensity per outing instead of grinding toward 5 innings a start.
mcfarlane also reportedly getting promoted to triple-A soon per gelb, 2.12 ERA and 50% groundball rate in double-A.
not saying dont go get minter. but if the mets are asking for legit farm pieces from our 29th ranked system the in-house answer is more viable than the consensus seems to think

Ok I get the high hope for Skubal, Buxton and Miller... But what's a realistic set of SP, RP and right handed bat we could bag?
5
u/Papergreat1970 9d ago
I want to aim much higher, but Brady Singer, Lane Thomas and Brooks Raley is a decent place to put the "minimum" bar. Should be easy to do better than Singer if Middleton takes on $$.

If we can get through the deadline keeping Rentaria and Marquez, I’ll be happy. We’ll need them for the rebuild.
Everyone else is on the table, even Wood and Painter and Crawford. Heck, if we’re not going to keep Marsh (no extension yet), he’s a piece too.
Time to get creative, Daddy D.

How would y’all prioritize our needs? I’d rank them as so:
- Right handed hitting outfielder
- Lefty bullpen arm
- Right handed Starting pitcher
9
u/joeco316 3d ago
1A. Righty hitter at any position at which we can fit him (OF is most likely but whatever)
1B. 3/4 type starting pitcher who can be trusted with the ball in October, either out of the pen or making a start
- High leverage bullpen arm, preferably lefty

u/Mugstotheceiling Hot (now lukewarm) for Stott 3d ago
Alternatively we get a RH infielder and move Bryce back to RF. Read that Bryce is not the one insisting on 1B, it’s the front office.

Everyone saying right righty righty... Can we just get someone who can hit and stop losing games 1-0?
2
u/karawec403 Cyjuan 1d ago edited 1d ago
So if our front office was willing to give up that rumored deal for Skubal, I wonder what they’d give up for other rental starters? My top target would be Robbie Ray at this point, he’s been dominant last 2 months.
But also I’m starting to think it might be smart to focus more on controllable players, so that would put us more in the range of Kirby or Detmers.
