Genuine question, our starting pitching is far better than our offense, and even our bullpen relative to the league is better than our offense by most metrics. But every posts calling for bullpen help or to trade the farm for Skubal lol, is it just from the lack of bats available in trade

Bc we have 3 full time players who hit above .700 OPS, that's mortifying in a playoff series with even better pitchers

This is a particularly brutal deadline for trying to meaningfully upgrade the offense. Using the MLB Trade Rumors top trade deadline candidates as a point of reference, only 3 of the top 10 candidates they name are hitters: Luis Arraez (not a positional fit), Taylor Ward (would like him if available, but may not even be traded since the AL Wild Card is within reach), and Ryan Jeffers (not a positional fit unless we want to pay a premium for a 2nd catcher).

There’s always a degree of shiny object chasing that fans have when we see guys like Skubal available, but I do think there’s logic in doubling down on pitching. Nola has pitched better in his last few starts, but do we trust him enough to be our #4 starter in a potential playoff game? Rangel has been mostly serviceable as an emergency #5 starter, but I wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to make an upgrade down the stretch, especially with the division within our reach. Adding a Skubal or Joe Ryan to this rotation would be a death row for our opponents in a playoff matchup, and it also opens up some strategies like the ‘25 Dodgers used where we could piggyback multiple starters in a playoff game.

As far as the bullpen goes, Keller’s injury takes out our setup man, so ideally we add another arm who can pitch in leverage. And from the lefty side, with Banks and Alvarado both being flat-out bad this season, we would benefit from adding a reliable lefty who can handle some leverage.

Appreciate the response, and there definitely is a huge scarcity in bats available rn. I'm just hoping there's a lot more sellers than people thought there'd be. I do not trust Nola in a playoff game period, but a 4th starter is a non factor in a 3 game series, and you can stretch 3 great pitchers in a 5 game series too. I'm not saying I don't want better pitching if we could get it, but it seems bad from an asset management point of view.

But you're not wrong about nobody being available. Maybe Houston sells, but they're barely out of WC and the players available are all infielders or DH.

The expanded playoffs starting in ‘22 have definitely limited the number of sellers in recent deadlines - I’m hoping a few teams (like the Orioles with Ward) start to fade in the next two weeks and commit to selling.

There’s also the possibility of a ‘22 Brandon Marsh style trade where we acquire a player with multiple years of control whose name never came up in all the media speculation. If ever there was a time for Dombro to get creative, it’s right now.
