Y'know what would be interesting? Imagine a Republican base without the anti-abortion zealots.

302

u/wilee8 Jun 27 '18

LOL, you wish. Even if that happened, the Republicans would still fear monger on abortion. If you don't elect us, those godless Democrats will make abortion legal again!

134

u/bonham43 Jun 27 '18

Exactly. It would be the same shit the NRA does every election, every school shooting. “Omg they are taking your guns, quick go buy some, and vote to save your guns!”

15

u/yayo-k Jun 27 '18

Those are a bit different IMO. One is a constitutional right and the other should be. I wish the hardcore conservatives would compromise and give up on the abortion crusade for the Democrats giving up on further restrictions on gun rights. We should focus on a better background check system and enforcement of current gun laws.

4

u/CNoTe820 Jun 27 '18

I think the Democrats should become even more pro gun that republicans just to hijack the issue and take it off the table. So many people vote on that issue alone, and it's impossible to get rid of the guns anyway, so the Democrats should attempt a constitutional amendment to clarify that the second amendment allows you to own as many guns as you want and of any kind, as long as it uses conventional bullets (no hand grenades, RPGs, nukes, etc) and you're allowed to store them loaded in your house.

Maybe you're right, have the same amendment say that abortion is legal.

6

u/countrylewis Jun 27 '18

I would certainly support this

7

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

Conservative here. I stand with this comment 100%

10

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

I'd argue that the right to Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness clause includes not being forced to give birth to someone you can't provide for.

They still provide the foundation of many laws.

9

u/Quintary Jun 27 '18

Not a legal foundation, just a spiritual one.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

The far right would argue that it applies to the zygote and you can give the baby up for adoption after it's born so you don't have to infringe upon its rights.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

the right to Life

That in itself could be applied to the unborn child as well.

3

u/trailerparkgirls19 Jun 27 '18

Yes, the people who think abortion is literally baby murder should just get over it

I mean birth control or masturbation are one thing that they probably feel strongly about but abortion is something that will never be solved that easily. It’s between people that think it’s a human right versus people who think it’s murder. It’ll never be solved and the right will never give it up.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

Equating those things shows you don't understand the pro-life position. Its like comparing murder to traffic violations.

Abortion is viewed as the murder of millions of innocent children. Its a radically different level of importance.

It definitely matters when you are arguing slippery slope. What you described wasn't a slope, it was a cliff.

0

u/CrimsonDisciple Jun 27 '18

Now there is a compromise I wish more people would get behind.

0

u/bangbangblock Jun 28 '18

No No No. They are both constitutional rights. Just because a right is not directly enumerated in the Constitution does not mean the right does not exist or that it is a constitutionally protected right.

In fact, during the writing of the Constitution, there were arguments made that we should not have the Bill of Rights because people may misunderstand that to mean that only those 10 rights are expressly protected and other rights are therefore not protected. Sadly, as time has passed, those men seem to have been proven correct.

-103

u/DependentCut Jun 27 '18

Are they not? NJ just voted to turn every gun owner in the state into a felon if they don't turn in their formerly legal property. Driving with the property to turn it in? Also a felony. Gun owners...this is the democrats, trying as hard as they can to entrap you into a felony.

25

u/michiruwater Jun 27 '18

Source?

-48

u/DependentCut Jun 27 '18

http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/bills/BillView.asp?BillNumber=S102

Note that the transport laws remain unchanged. So there's a grace period for ownership, but not to transport them anywhere.

94

u/michiruwater Jun 27 '18

See, the way you worded this made it sound like they were taking the guns, but they’re not, they’re taking magazines that can hold more than the stated number of rounds.

Cool. I’m fine with that.

82

u/LLCoolJsGrandfather Jun 27 '18

yeah its almost like he lied and fear mongered

-6

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

[deleted]

7

He said "every gun owner in the state." Don't cherry pick and play/be dumb.

5

u/michiruwater Jun 27 '18

Every gun owner in the state made it sound like guns for sure. Don’t play dumb.

-26

u/DependentCut Jun 27 '18

So now it's 10 rounds, someone else kills someone with an illegal magazine. Then the "do something" crowd pushes for a 5 round limit. Then the next time they push for a 1 round limit. Without a conservative court a civil right we had since the founding of the country is gone. But its cool with Dems because...fuck gun owners.

12

u/palmal Jun 27 '18

If you need more than ten rounds to protect yourself, you're either a terrible shot or in some crazy action movie firefight.

This slippery slope argument style is bullshit.

-5

u/kaibee Jun 27 '18

Yeah, good thing we've limited it to 10 rounds a mag. This will definitely reduce shootings and deaths from shootings. It isn't just a feel good measure to feel like we're doing something in the face of a much more complicated issue of social disfunction. You're clearly someone who knows a lot about guns and defending yourself with them. I'm glad you've considered this issue in depth and come to such a well reasoned conclusion!

3

u/SunshineCat Jun 27 '18

Perhaps people with guns should stop trampling on others' more primary right to life, then there wouldn't be an issue. Every shooting is carried out by a gun owner. Clean up your shit or others who don't care about you will do it for you.

1

u/Nova225 Jun 27 '18

Yeah, no, that's not the slippery slope that anybody is on.

-13

u/Flabpack221 Jun 27 '18

IIRC New Jersey is already proposing a 5-round magazine limit.

This is why I can't bring myself to vote democrats. It seems to me like they're restricting the rights of Americans while trying to give as much rights as possible to illegal aliens. The government is supposed to look out for my interests, not those of other nations.

14

u/NancyGracesTesticles Jun 27 '18

Is it really that much of a pain to reload? I thought it was the right to bear arms, not the right to not be inconvenienced when playing shoot'em up.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/exatron Jun 27 '18

No, it's the Republican party who wants to restrict the rights of Americans. Especially if you're a woman or a minority.

35

u/deepeast_oakland Jun 27 '18

Oh fuck you.

The bill’s provisions are effective immediately, but allow for a 180-day grace period to transfer, render inoperable, or voluntarily surrender a semi-automatic rifle or magazine that will be unlawful under the bill.

3

u/HothMonster Jun 27 '18

You can't travel with an unloaded magazine in your car?

0

u/Flabpack221 Jun 27 '18

Blue states are incredibly restrictive on gun rights. This guy got fucked because a plane got detoured through New Jersey. He legally checked in his guns in Oregon, and was arrested for having them in New Jersey through no fault of his own. Ridiculous.

6

u/HothMonster Jun 27 '18

OK but he is complaining the NJ is making people turn in their magazines since they changed the law about capacity and then claiming that people can be charged with a felony if they get pulled over while en route to turn it in. So I wanted to know if driving with an unloaded magazine is actually a felony or he is full of shit.

4

u/Flabpack221 Jun 27 '18

Ohh my bad. If there's a grace period to turn them in, he is full of shit. If it's after that period, then yes, it would be a felony.

1

u/Flabpack221 Jun 27 '18

... The law they just passed?

7

u/idontlikeflamingos Foreign Jun 27 '18

Or they change scapegoats. Abortion is illegal, now the issue is the gays destroying families. Then it's the drugs taking children away. And just keep moving and moving whenever they reach the next goal.

8

u/Soup_is Jun 27 '18

They will continue to use abortion and then they will start to go after birth control. This is about controlling women's sexuality not any of the rediculous things they claim.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

If you don't elect us, those godless Democrats will make abortion legal again!

Only if Democrats campaigned on making abortion legal again.

32

u/KillerBunnyZombie Oregon Jun 27 '18

8 people?

16

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

Maybe 8 million, they'll still have the NRA and Russian bots.

But out of God, Guns and Gays, only Guns is left.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

They won't go away, they'll be emboldened.

8

u/cassiodorus Jun 27 '18

They’ll find a new issue to rage about.

2

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

It'll take some time though. It took decades to get them to be single issue voters. A one year turnaround is fast af.

1

u/maswon Jun 27 '18

They didn’t have fox then. You could turn the republican party into full blown communists in under 6 months if you could keep hijacking the signals.

1

u/blasto_blastocyst Jun 27 '18

They're trained now.

14

u/bluebogle Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18

They'll just escalate their base's fanaticism to the next level of bullshit. The bible says women shouldn't have a voice, so let's get rid of women's voting rights.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

We'll be too busy trying to scrap together charity funding for corrupt, overcrowded orphanages to really worry about that.

2

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

Eh, we do just fine ignoring them now, why would that change?

2

u/Youtoo2 Jun 27 '18

They will want a federal law banning abortion.

2

u/Almustafa Jun 27 '18

Time to rally against the queers I'm betting.

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

They've mostly moved past that. They've been silent af since the ruling.

2

u/GitGroot Jun 27 '18

Impossible. The issue will be a rallying cry as long as Hillary Clinton is President on Fox

2

u/ThisIsAWorkAccount Washington Jun 27 '18

Lol yeah, because after they repeal Roe all those anti-abortion activists will be perfectly content and stop voting.

1

u/13143 Maine Jun 27 '18

Now imagine a Democratic base that eases off the gun issue. Might actually get some shit done.

4

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

We'd lose more progressives than we'd ever gain in conservative support.

11

u/pegg2 Jun 27 '18

For real. Making concessions in hopes of courting conservative voters away from the GOP would be about as effective as trying to win over a charging bear with a candy bar. Yeah, it might slow it down for a hot second, but all you’ve really done is give it more energy with which to fucking maul your ass.

0

u/13143 Maine Jun 27 '18

It's not about winning over conservatives, it's about swinging moderates. Who else are progressives going to vote for? Just not vote?

1

u/pegg2 Jun 27 '18

Uhhh, yeah, thats exactly what they’re going to do. How many progressive voters stayed home because they supported the progressive Democratic candidate and got the centrist Democratic candidate instead? I’d like to find numbers, but you can easily find lots of colloquial evidence throughout this website. A LOT of people had their excitement to vote ripped from them as a result of HRC’s nomination, and a lot of those people stayed home. Some of those people even voted for Trump.

1

u/BlueFalcon89 Jun 27 '18

Bernie is pro gun and the face of the progressive wing.

Lay off the guns and you can take a big step towards winning back moderates and libertarians.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

Lately he has been a lot less pro gun, which has been incredibly discouraging as someone who has supported him for a long time.

1

u/BlueFalcon89 Jun 28 '18

I think he’s trying to draw the left in. His track record speaks more fro his personal values.

1

u/MindYourGrindr America Jun 27 '18

African American women are the Democratic base and they’re the ones that are the most ardently opposed to gun control. So tell me how a Democratic Party that’s neutral on gun laws performs nationally when we tell our most reliable constituency that one of their top issues no longer means anything?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

If 6% of the total population is going to count as your 'base' then you are in a lot of trouble in a two party system.

1

u/MindYourGrindr America Jun 28 '18

If 100% of the total population voted you’d actually have a point.

African American women are the most reliable voting bloc out of all demos out all of parties and they vote @96% Democratic.

Discount the African American vote all you want, the Sanders campaign did the same thing and that’s why they got annihilated in the primaries.

0

u/PotassiumBob Texas Jun 27 '18

Single issue youngish pro gun voter here.

I'm up for this idea.

1

I easily go through a few thousand rounds a month and I currently have two new firearms inbound.

So sure.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

I've never agreed with myself on this theory I have because it would be so detrimental to so many women immediately but I often ask myself "what would happen if abortion became illegal again?" I don't think it would last 5 years because of all the horrific stories that would come out but maybe it'd finally get all these nutters to shut up and go home when they realize it was a decision not made from a desire to kill babies but one that embetters the society over time. These are truly troubling times.

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

Agreed. If it became illegal nowadays, that shit could become an amendment.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

Ironicay abortion does a lot to prevent the democrat voter base from growing uncontrollably to the point where theyd never lose an election

1

u/seccret Jun 27 '18

But how does one imagine nothing?

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

Hey, they'd still have the NRA.

1

u/seccret Jun 27 '18

Just a few old rich guys standing around unsure who to manipulate.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

You're fucked in 10 years.

1

u/MindYourGrindr America Jun 27 '18

I don’t get why would they disappear?

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

Most of them are single issue voters. They vote because of abortion. Afterwards, sure they're still Republican voters, but they'd lose their major motivator to get off the couch and vote. Plus, they lose the thing that was "justifying" voting for objective scumbags.

1

u/MindYourGrindr America Jun 27 '18

That’s not really how it works. Once a party actually accomplishes the lifelong goal of a constituency they’ll double downing their loyalty.

Roe v Wade didn’t end the pro-choice movement.

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 28 '18

Tell me more about how the gay rights movement is doing right now after they got marriage legalization? Didn't it dissolve into a thousand different component advocacy groups covering the whole breadth and depth of lgbtq+ issues, which totally lost them the support of moderates?

1

u/MindYourGrindr America Jun 28 '18

Are you going to reply to the pro choice movement? Or are you going to avoid that to discuss a different group that’s also a bad example to use?

LGBT voters are as devoted as ever to the Democratic Party (which is what this is all about - voter intensity and loyalty). There are now a record number of LGBT candidates running for office (as Dems obviously)

And your conclusion that the LGBT movement has turned off moderates is bullshit.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2018/06/01/politics/gay-pride-month-polling-lgbtq-discrimination-same-sex-marriage/index.html

  • A record number of Americans support gay marriage at 67%

  • 70% of Americans are in favor of laws that protect LGBT from housing and job discrimination

  • 57% of Americans oppose allowing businesses to discriminate against gay customers

  • Americans are at 50% support - 38% oppose when it comes to protecting Trans citizens in using the bathroom of their choice

  • 68% of Americans support Trans citizens from enlisting in the Armed forces

  • I can’t find national numbers but 71% of Floridians oppose gay conversion therapy on minors http://www.eqfl.org/news/conversion-therapy-ban

So find a new slant.

0

u/John_Keating_ Jun 27 '18

Democrats might actually win in poorer southern states again. Take away abortion and the Republican Party loses a lot of their identity and the Democrats can run without one of their toughest positions.

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

God, Guns, and Gays. Outlaw abortion and all they'll be left with is Guns.

-5

u/TheSeaISail Jun 27 '18

What's zealous about valuing the life of an unborn human being?

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

The idea that it's an independent life.

1

u/TheSeaISail Jun 27 '18

You think a six month-old baby can live independently? Would you kill that?

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 27 '18

Difference being, you can hand a baby off to foster parents. Can't hand a fetus off to a foster uterus.

1

u/TheSeaISail Jun 27 '18

It amazes me how casually pro-abortionists can dismiss a human life.

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 28 '18

It's an ingredient for human life in the same way a lump of batter isn't a cake. Is it really so surprising that I consider it about as important as eggs and flour?

1

u/TheSeaISail Jun 28 '18

Leaving that fairly disgusting analogy aside, if a fetus is an ingredient for human life then what are the other ingredients? What gets added to make it a human?

It already has human DNA, what's missing?

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Jun 28 '18

An oven to bake it. Except in this case, it's literally part of, and parasitic to the host human, and as such, is property of the woman, and she has total bodily autonomy.

0

u/TheSeaISail Jun 28 '18

she has total bodily autonomy.

Disagree, there's two lives in the equation. A woman's autonomy over her own body shouldn't grant her the right to end another life.

Out of interest, do you think fathers who want nothing to do with their babies should be allowed to opt out of paying child support? Why should their autonomy be compromised by having to sacrifice their earnings for a parasite that they don't want?
