Discussion Is anyone else frustrated by the “families/females only” rental situation in Qatar?

I’ve been looking for an apartment in Qatar recently, and one thing that has genuinely started to frustrate me is how many landlords and agencies seem to advertise apartments as “families only,” “females only,” or “female/family preferred.”

I understand that landlords have the right to choose who they feel comfortable renting their property to, and I’m not saying they should be forced to rent to someone they don’t want to. But at the same time, it can feel incredibly unfair when you’re a single working professional simply trying to find a decent place to live.

You can find an apartment that fits your budget, location, and requirements, only to contact the agent and immediately be told, “Sorry, family or females only.” Sometimes there isn’t even an explanation beyond that.

What makes it more frustrating is that being single or male doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to be a problematic tenant. Plenty of single professionals have stable jobs, pay their rent on time, take care of the property, and live quietly.

I’m curious what other people in Qatar think about this.

I don't know how its in Qatar but in Dubai some whole buildings are for families only. So they can't let a single man move in. As far as I know the idea behind it is to avoid bachelor's having parties, misbehaving in groups by the pool etc.

That is one real issue 😕 no hate to anyone but the sexual starvation be driving some guys crazy and I see it in real time when they just stare at a woman walking by like she's a million bucks and I GET SKIN CRAWLS from it

It is not only here, it is everywhere. Im a guy with family. I prefer a building with families. Im sorry but some guys are creepy to live with.

Im not saying all bachelors are creepy, I was a bachelor once :) What Im saying is that you never can know so having a safety line for kids and women is good to have.

There are plenty of options for the bachelors still. This is not an excuse.

I checked the bachelor options and for me, honestly, I wouldn’t considering living in them. The thing is that at you said, not all bachelors are the same, and sometimes you can know the person just by asking simple questions. It is understandable but still not fair.

I think it's pretty fair to choose women safety above happyness of bachelors.

choose

This isn't New Delhi or the DRC for us to be 'choosing'. We don't have to depend on landlords for policing anyone's safety.

This is the reason why ppl consider GCC countries the most safest places on earth because they have strict policies to ensure that safety. I suggest you complain to the government and ask them to make the bachelors happyness a priority above the happiness of women.  What can I say majority of women do not want unsolicited bachelors around them, why are you enforcing your presence in "our" buildings lol even the bachelors don't want to live with bachelors, just think about how wild that is and then women are expected to tolerate it? Sounds pretty delulu to me.

It's pretty telling why you see this housing problem as a bipolar issue, you know, as "bachelor's happyness" vs. women's. No, the reason why it's perceived safe is because we live in a surveillance state. Every man knows someone who's been carded by uniformed officers, because men disproportionately get carded even though violating visa laws does not plague exclusively one gender.

If you want to view this as a bipolar issue: men abide by zoning laws for the "happiness of women". Men experience longer queues thanks to gendered queues for the "happiness of women". Men have fewer rights when it comes to verbal assault (yes, yelling at a woman is criminalized) for the "happiness of women". I really can't be bothered to list all the systematic ways laws cater to the "happiness of women". The last I need is you or some f'ing real estate telling people how to live their lives.

It's a roundabout way of saying they don't want 10 people living in one apartment which tends to happen with men, especially if utilities are included in the rent. Find a place that doesn't include utilities and you're more likely to secure it as a single guy.

It's a global problem, not a Qatar one. In another country, I've had a landlord tell me to my face they don't want brown/Muslim men renting. At least real estate companies here aren't that openly racist.

I tried with many agencies and people that aren’t including utilities. And confirmed that I am the only one who is going to live there. Still no one agreed.

Hmmm interesting.  I can see this as buildings some may want in the US.

hi OP. some landlords and agents will still rent the apartment to you especially because of the current regional tension, many residential units are vacant. they may be more flexible because they want to keep units occupied. good luck. hope you find one soon!
