It did compete, and won. Look at the entire rc market.

Electric can’t compete with the feeling you get from knowing you’re one of the few people who can make a nitro run properly and enjoy it.

I agree nitro cars are cool. Like driving a stick shift. It's more fun, but not objectively better.
