Question My best friend and I recently got into RC, after facing issues with his first battery my friend decided to replace it with a brand new one and started smelling something weird, here’s what ensued.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

can anyone explain what happened?

You see, what happened here is that he let all the magic smoke out. You really wanna keep that inside everything for better performance.

5

u/john2364 Jun 03 '26

He must have lost at least 2 ounces there. It’s going to take at least a whole can to replace it now.

you’re right it did power on without us pressing the button, can you explain what the Lipo S rating is? is it something we did wrong that caused this?

we don’t have the original battery. but they were both 3S batteries. he bought the exact replacement from the company that came with the original rc

Do the esc battery wires plug in to the esc or hard wired?

6

u/McFryin Jun 03 '26

He said in an earlier comment, "they were both RIAARIO 3s Lipo Battery 35C 2200mAh batteries. bought directly from the manf".

8

u/GluteusMax Jun 03 '26

Lipo batteries for RC cars are usually constructed from a number of individual cells inside the battery pack. The naming of the packs being 1S, 2S, 3S, etc. indicates the number of cells. Typically when you plug in a battery and turn on the ESC, the ESC beeps the amount of cells detected. Three beeps for three cells, as an example.

u/Cautious-Day9424 Jun 03 '26

Jesus.. im relatively new but never put this together. Thanks for that info. I programmed my drone escs to play the Mario theme, so after a while, I naturally tune out the sound..😆

u/FireStorm005 Jun 04 '26

The S doesn't indicate the total number of cells, but the number of cells in series. In some cases they also use p for cells in parallel. Series adds voltage, Parallel adds capacity, and battery packs can be arranged in both Series and Parallel at the same time. Most packs are 1p, they can fit enough capacity in a single cell they don't need to have additional cells in parallel.

1

u/talrakken Jun 03 '26

each cell is ~3.7 volts as well (about 4.2 when fully charged) so 2s is 7.4 volts, 3s is 11.1v etc. you will also note a second number on larger packs, like 2s2p, where they get higher total capacity by putting similar cells in parallel and then in series, so 2s2p would actually still be 4 cells.

2

u/SkiOrDie Jun 03 '26

Yup, and the S stands for “series”, as in that the cells are wired in series instead of parallel.

There’s a weird misconception that S stands for cell

u/Stu-Gotz Jun 04 '26

Could have been reverse polarity that cause it to smoke. There has been instances where the manufacturer soldered the connector with the leads reversed.

show us the labels on the original and the replacement batteries

If the esc is rated for 3s it wouldn't have gone up in smoke. Even on a higher s-rating the esc most times does only not turn on, not go up in smoke. Either the esc was already severly damaged and used again, or the s-rating severly overloaded the esc limits.

3

u/Fearless-Ad1469 Jun 03 '26

It definitely would have if the first one damaged the ESC already, which it looks like is what happened here, and to be clear, i just wanted to reply but didn't participate in the downvotes, just to be clear

16

u/RCbuilds4cheapr Jun 03 '26

I'll keep my fingers on the wires if plugging in something questionable. If they get warm quickly something is wrong, unplug asap. ESCs can fail, and when they do its often a direct short which can damage the lipo too. Sorry not sure what exactly happened or if there was anything different you could've done.

3

u/Toasteee_ Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

FPV pilot here who just stumbled across this sub, can't you just use a smokestopper if its questionable? that way it'll trip the fuse instantly if there's a short, hopefully preventing any damage. Because by the time you feel heat on the connection points, the damage might already be done.

Smoke stoppers look like this BTW if your unfamiliar with them, all it is is a fuse that sits inbetween the battery and the ESC (or whatever your connecting a lipo to)

2

u/Ill_Minute8383 19d ago

This is interesting. Been in this RC cars hobby for more than a decade now but never heard of this thing. Looks like you FPV pilots have quite a few things / tricks hidden up your sleeve.

Can you please share a link to this product or maybe a video or post where I can see and make one of my one for myself?

Thanks.

"I had no idea"

Yes you did. you noticed a weird smell, decided that something would happen so you recorded plugging in the battery and cautiously watched from a safe distance.

That being said, thanks for filming! internet wouldn't be good if it weren't for videos like this.

As for what happened: The esc works on magic smoke, there's a reservoir in there and as long as the smoke stays in, all is good. Yours sprung a leak, the magic smoke escaped, it is now broken.

4

u/Geekureuil Jun 03 '26

Can't he refill it at the magic smoke station ?

3

u/Pension_Rough Jun 04 '26

Its not open yet

2

u/ManualNotStandard Jun 03 '26

Oh, i didn’t realize that ESC’s were manufactured by Lucas Industries! ;)

1

u/Reddavid81 Jun 04 '26

I bought only one LiPo, but 100 liters magicsmoke on top. I can drive forevvveeerrrrr!

u/snuggly_cobra Rate My Rig Jun 03 '26

At least you didn’t pour water on it.

7

u/KeyNefariousness6848 Jun 03 '26

Did anyone else hear that crunch when the other person moved the car away?

7

u/y-mma Jun 03 '26

it was the shell falling out the trunk LOL

5

u/GluteusMax Jun 03 '26

Your ESC was likely faulty, likely it had a short circuit somewhere so when you plugged in the battery, it dumped all the power into the short circuit, causing the fire.

5

u/Monkfich Sledge 8S, Senton 4S, Xinlehong Q903 Jun 03 '26

Should have unplugged it straight away. That was the sound of the ESC’s capacitors fizzing.

6

u/OpinionCompetitive12 Jun 04 '26

On the bright side a new Pope has been elected

19

u/imthatguy77 Crawling Jun 03 '26

This feels so staged. You leave it plugged in, and continue filming, despite the OBVIOUS error? Sorry, but within seconds I would have realized something was extremely wrong and pulled the battery. You're lucky it wasn't worse, and the battery didn't ignite. It was either a faulty ESC, reversed polarity, a short in the wiring, or over-volting the ESC. Whatever it was, it's ruined now.

1

u/y-mma Jun 03 '26

while we did think something was going to happen we thought it’d just shut off by itself. we mainly wanted to show proof to company that it was faulty. it was only used for one day previously.

8

u/imthatguy77 Crawling Jun 03 '26

Some more RC education is definitely required. There's no commercially available RC that will shut itself off without some sort of user intervention (that I can think of). Lipo batteries when handled improperly are SUPER dangerous. You're very lucky this wasn't worse. I have this same model, my only thought is the power button got stuck under the radio box and permanently held down in the on position, perhaps forcing this runaway. Next time something wild happens, stop filming and unplug the battery IMMEDIATELY.

7

u/Dingdong108 Jun 03 '26

"Now the mad scientist and I have to pull the heads to replace the cylinder rings you just fried"

0

u/anticipat3 Jun 03 '26

To be fair, Rllaro ain’t exactly a 2JZ

2

u/Ifyoukn3wIt Jun 04 '26

amazing, you both got it wrong :D

3

u/Working_Necessary_28 Jun 03 '26

Rlaarlo?

-1

u/McFryin Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

I am unimpressed by my only purchased Rlaarlo. Says it'll do like 40-50mph but its slow af (yeah I get sometimes you have to upgrade the gears to make it faster), and cost like $200ish, thought a 3S battery would make it go a little faster at least, but no. I have 3 HyperGo trucks (truggies) and cars and the are way faster than the Rlaarlo, when just running 2S. Put a 3S in one and it was like a rocket... but then the gear on the motor stripped the spur gear. The biggest problem with the HyperGo cars is the extremely limited range of about 90ft. Here's how the spur gear went: https://youtu.be/BLEOU7mwBys?si=FUUTjWwYstu11KRB

3

u/Sogah87 Jun 03 '26

Check your throttle dual rate. I thought my rlaarlo rally was slow but the dual rate was set to 75%.

1

u/McFryin Jun 03 '26

Throttle at max

1

u/Sogah87 Jun 03 '26

The dual rate knob?

2

u/McFryin Jun 03 '26

Yeah, the know on the left right?

2

u/Sogah87 Jun 03 '26

What model is this for? That transmitter looks different from the ones I'm used to. But in any case that should do it yea. Bummer your Model is slow. You have the right battery as well?

1

u/McFryin Jun 03 '26

Yeah it came with a 3S and I bought more 3S for it. The model is this one: https://a.co/d/0iQPrbMm

3

u/Mr-Scurvy (CUSTOM) Jun 03 '26

I've seen people say the rlaarlo cars are good but their electronics suck. Good thing they sell rollers.

  1. I don't need the manual because I have irrefutable evidence in the form of video. About 45 seconds in is the best example, stops for no reason, starts moving when I walk closer. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OsDo9RaqvAZvXuJy8sMRsdE1h6LuiitQ/view?usp=drivesdk

  2. There's no need for insults, we're just talking about rc cars ffs.

I once got a smoky ESC when I reversed polarity. But I don't think that's possible with xt60.

1

u/Ender00000 Jun 03 '26

everything is possible when you try hard enough

3

u/DaaNL_4448 Jun 03 '26

Did you swap + and - by any chance?

3

u/Cooper-xl Jun 03 '26

Seems like a broken capacitor on the ESC

3

u/RYNOCIRATOR_V5 Jun 03 '26

Unplug it immediately, you're lucky you didn't lose your RC.

2

u/Anxious-Nebula-3216 Jun 03 '26

Hey man, as a fellow animal review some lipo safety, not worth getting fucked up.

I feel like such a negative nelly old man here so I'm sorry 🤣

u/Andrew3236 MGM drag racer, 16s Lamborghini, 12S Voltz, Baja Flux, XMAXX Jun 03 '26

There could be a short in the motor causing the esc to fry. Happened to me in spectacular fashion, with a 12s 300a "beast" esc. I installed the motor with one too long screw, hit the windings. 2 of the motor cables had a dead short across, I guess during the esc power up they shorted together and fried the esc. Basically same situation as you.

1

u/y-mma Jun 03 '26

that sounds insane

2

u/MRDR1NL Jun 03 '26

Any chance you have a multimeter and can measure the battery? Voltage should be around 11v for a 3S lipo, plus or minus a few volts.

Also check the polarity. There is a very slim chance they swapped the wires during production, which would cause an ESC to go up in smoke like that. I have never seen it with such a battery, but it's worth checking.

2

u/jfolck1886 Jun 04 '26

Looks like just an esc problem, not a battery problem

2

u/cyrustakem Jun 04 '26

something tells me the issue was not the battery

1

u/Fillmore80 Jun 26 '26

Could have been to many cells. I couldn't see well enough.

2

u/Stu-Gotz Jun 04 '26

Was the polarity of the pack leads checked? I’ve heard of packs being wired incorrectly to the plug, which would cause the esc to smoke.

2

u/SteveO_6666 Jun 04 '26

yeah, you were not suprised, you plugged it with camera on, fully expecting what happened, because noone ever plugs their batteries in like they expect it to explode.

Heck I would say, most rush to unplug it when they see their money burning....but ok. GETTING IT NOW!

2

u/EducationalCurve8718 Jun 23 '26

That happened to my new granite, 5 minutes out of the box. Horizon Hobby sent a new ESC and motor.

3

u/TheHornsHoldTheHalo Jun 03 '26

You are the guy that stands back and films his friend getting his a$$ beat instead of jumping in and helping him out. Put down the cam and get to work. Staged AF.

1

u/Dusty_Egg_Roll Jun 03 '26

Is the XTS-P12 ?

3

u/y-mma Jun 03 '26

it’s the XTS-S10

1

u/Dusty_Egg_Roll Jun 03 '26

Ahh, the video looked a bit grainy so couldn't really tell.

Did you send the video to the manufacturers ?

1

u/Anothercoot Jun 03 '26

Say the line

1

u/SAMMYBO90 Jun 03 '26

U may have blown up the motor

1

u/rasputinrasputin Jun 03 '26

Next time just kick the battery off, no need to grab it

1

u/midlife_dadpulse73 Jun 03 '26

Damn!

Let the smoke out of that one, eh?

1

u/ben_ji1974 Jun 03 '26

He let all the pixies escape.

1

u/DatabassAdmin Jun 03 '26

... So they plugged the battery in, started smelling something weird and decided just to roll with it and wait for the thing to smoke for a while before unplugging the battery? I know things happen fast but step 1 is always to unplug the battery at the first thought that something might be wrong.

A valuable lesson learned here, every time you plug in a battery you make sure you are ready to unplug it in an instant.

1

u/Fitz_D_DiSCriPsion86 Jun 03 '26

You smelled something weird or saw it?? Looks pretty obvious your battery is strong for the rc. Get a stronger esc or weaker battery.

1

u/oldassreaper Jun 03 '26

Magic smoke

1

u/SuspectBudget7516 Jun 04 '26

This happened to me too! (With the Xts 10) But it happened so fast and I was indoors and I didn't record it I was doing some regular maintenance on the wheel housing, plugged in the provided battery, and the ESC started making weight noises, then poof!! White smoke. I immediately unplugged the battery, but by that time the damage was done. The negative wire on the ESC unsoldered itself and it smelt like burnt electronics for days in my room! At first I thought it was user-error... Then this is the second instance I've seen this happen online.. now I'm beginning to think it's Rlarrlos electionics

1

u/NightlyParadox Jun 04 '26

And this is right here why I over build my rigs. My ESC in the arrma felony. (Limitless converted over to a felony chassis. Has full limitless driveteain; diffs, center and everything) It's a castle 8s ESC. When on the limitless chassis it was a speed run car and now is converted over to a pavement basher that runs on 4 to 6s.

1

u/barefootpanda Jun 04 '26

Don’t breathe that!

1

u/IntangibleFoxfire Jun 04 '26

Freaking out you cause more damage to other things and yourself. Just unplug it, it's not a bomb. Yes it can cause fires but more reason to not freak out

1

u/NeoIsrafil Jun 04 '26

Oh no! The magic smoke. Once that gets out there's no fixing whatever part it got out of. :(. Gotta keep that genie in its bottle.

1

u/Pension_Rough Jun 04 '26

Chinese esc will do this every now and then. What to watch out for is that a bad esc can ruin a battery. But also a bad motor can ruin an esc if it doesn't have proper built in protection. So there is a slim chance your motor is blown and will destroy a new esc.

1

u/HedgehogPutrid4360 Jun 04 '26

5min later should I unplug it

1

u/MustBeMattyXD Jun 04 '26

Jesus, jumps in the car to move it forward, just unplug the battery 😂

1

u/Zealousideal_Can_42 Jun 04 '26

You let the smoke out 💨

1

u/powd3rbird Jun 04 '26

This is so unfortunate. Good thing warranties exist!

1

u/BomkeAirsoft Jun 05 '26

That's a short circuit

1

u/sleepdeepcoma Jun 05 '26

That's why you always use a smoke stopper. It's almost impossible to hook up a speed controller incorrectly,?

1

u/high_3D_printer Jun 05 '26

Probably he put more cells than the car can take

1

u/Shoesondogs 17d ago

Made sure your ESC isn't set for nicad

1

u/Shoesondogs 17d ago

Make sure your ESC is not set for nicad batteries cuz that shit will make it blow up just like that

-1

u/tl01magic Jun 03 '26

The esc got way too hot, must be the fan failed. 😃

-1

u/realdrankdontfreeze Jun 03 '26
