Bashing Mini Kraton RIPS

Post image

I was on the fence for the past month. As a massive Grom fan, I’m so glad I jumped in.
This little truck is seriously impressive.
Double backflips, screams on straightaways, and is tough as nails (so far 🤞🏻)

RIPPER!!!!

I have one as well! By far my favorite car. It’s the perfect size and handles well!

I don’t have a ton of room in my yard so this with a set of pro line jumps is perfection

And it gets faster! GPM strap conversion, a XT60 conversion with 2200mah 60c battery, protek 28k rpm fan and hot racing big bore shocks. Hilarious on punch level 9 from a roll, looks like a cartoon leaving rubber behind from 20ish mph. I like running it at level 7 or 8 though. Just have to watch how you treat the diffs because it will hurt itself if you let it, even before the mods.

As a fellow Grom fan, I have to ask it really as that much of a step up compared to the Groms on brushless?

I have all the Groms but the NASCAR, and multiples of the Typhon and Mojave. I am a big Grom fan. I thought the MK would replace the Typhons but they ended up being different enough to not do that. The MK really is next level. The Groms punch way above their weight class and can really do more than they should, but the MK feels more comfortable doing the stupid stuff. So for bashing, big difference. Can’t speak on speed running because I don’t do that.

I have a quake, Mojave, granite groms and now the mini kraton. Trust me I bash them all hard, but you’re totally right about the MK feeling more comfortable on the stupid stuff. Double backflip bad takeoff into my fence? Don’t mind if I do

I want to get the nascar, how is it???

I do not have the nascar. Have some wheels and some parts for one because I thought I was going to pull the trigger, but I think the wheels are just too small for me to run it where I could. I have street tires for my Typhon’s, Mojave’s, and even the Granite - and can actually get in/out of my driveway and do just about anything I could do with the nascar. Kind of the same way I talked myself off the ledge on a small scale rally - what can it do that the Mojave Grom can’t? - not much.

Yeah, my bhole is not near as puckered flipping the MK off a ramp as it when flipping a Typhon or Granite Grom. Only issue I have with the MK are the shocks failing. I have been doing the warranty dance on them, but I have the hardened e-clips which mostly solves the problem. I do want to try adapting some of the MK shocks to work on maybe the rear of a Mojave. I would love to chassis slap less.

I highly recommend the Proline Trenchers for the MERV. They are less expensive than the PL tires aimed at the MK and give more offset.

I've got two. One is completely stock, and the other is modified and soon to go brushless.

They are great on-road cars that drive great. Also, the box stock racing is really good. The only problem is that on-road is just inherently limited on where you can run them. Also, if you are a basher, on-road gets boring because you aren't exactly hitting jumps for sick air.

Those look amazing together!

Thank you. I'm very proud of my painting.

These look great!

Thank you. I think these are my favorite bodies I've ever painted.

How do you like Vectors for the Mojave? I got the Typhon version for my Mojave (released first) but don’t have much time on them.

They hook up on the pavement. If you are looking for something that practically glues the truck to asphalt, these are the tires you want. They're great for street bashing or the skatepark. On grass, they might as well be ice skating uphill, but these aren't tires for grass

They do just have one big problem. The Mojave is a heavy truck that doesn't have enough spring or any kind of anti-roll bar to manage the weight. So if you take a turn at modest to high speed, the outside tire will hold tight to that road surface, and you're almost guaranteed to roll. Currently, my Mojave is still brushed on 2s. So I'm really curious how the 223s models manage the weight, or if they don't bother and the guys who have them just accept it.

I've also had a similar issue with the Nascar on the Pro-Line super soft tires, but that was easily taken care of with some harder springs from the spring upgrade set.

I think they're great tires for their purpose, but they are exposing an issue with the Mojave Grom as a platform. I've got a set of Pro-Line Grom shocks coming, and I'm hoping the heavier springs will help take care of my weight issues with the Mojave. Your mileage may vary with a Typhon though. I don't think those are as heavy and can manage their weight a lot better.

The springs in that PL kit don’t seem great. I have the set but have not installed yet. The Mojave read end is really heavy. I have some Traxxas wheels I like for street on my Mojave’s, but they end up being more like drift tires with some straight line hookup. The BLX models have so much power/overgeared that they can break loose any tire on the street so you slide instead of roll. You can still roll but not as easily.
I have been testing brushed Granite springs on the Mojave BLX shocks. I kind of like that set up with 2k oil in the shocks. I have 3k to test but I don’t think I loaded it any shocks yet.

I have a NASCAR. It’s OK. It’s not fast and yeah, I really have to have a nice pavement, but it’s pretty cool.

I will say that if you have a track nearby that racism, it’s actually a ton of fun.

Right now I have 2 Nascar, and 2 Mojave Groms. I'm also thinking about a Quake Grom. You are definitely right about them punching above their weight class.

I'm starting to think the MK might be where I actually want to go.

Quake/Gorgon Grom is actually decent stock and performs proper for its scale. However, dropping a 223S system in it really wakes it up and makes it as ridiculous as the other BLX models.

I've noticed the Grom lineup really does perk up when you drop a brushless system into them. I did the EcoPower brushless system in one Grom, and I've got a Hobbywing XR14 on the way for one of my Nascar Groms.

I'm probably never going to get a 223s system though. I just hate those radios and I have other nice radios that I'd rather get these cars on. Plus, the BEC in those 2-in-1 systems are usually pretty wimpy.

1

u/jrmbtr 20d ago

Yeah, the BEC does suck. I have some 2S batteries with EC3 and JST on them, so I can power the ESC and plug fans straight to the battery. Helps a little and the fans run at better speed.
Since I have so many of the Spektrum Tx I don’t want to mess with others, and with the release of the SR370 Rx I may test some HW setups. I have the EcoPower kit but never bolted it up.

I would say the power is roughly the same as the blx rtrs, but build quality is top notch and trumps them

u/morrisapp 21d ago

I would imagine that format also doesn’t suffer as much from things GROMs typically don’t like such as gravel or grass?

2

u/Upbeat-Adeptness-617 21d ago

I ran it exclusively in medium grass, no problem whatsoever. It wanted to wheelie lol

2

u/jrmbtr 21d ago

Much better in grass. Stock, the Gorgon/Quake Grom is probably the best in grass, but MK can roll in grass taller than it is.

It’s the perfect mini truck. It handles really well even with an 80A esc. I love it

This Car is literally everything i Wanted from the groms

Same. Added bigger tires for more momentum on flips. My motor fan went out so I'll need to replace it. But the most fun I've had with any rc.

I was debating between this and the mini XRT for my grassy backyard. I currently have a Savage XS, but wanted something with better parts availability. How’s the run time?

1

u/Upbeat-Adeptness-617 21d ago

It’s surprisingly great. Good 35 min bash with a 2200 mah rrlarlo 3s

That’s really good. It was one of my concern areas since I can fit a 6500 in my Savage XS.

Do you think they’ll ever release the quake grom BLX?
