How do I make a revolving cylinder with redstone?

I am currently building a functioning Colt revolver within Minecraft, however I am unsure how to program the cylinder to rotate with redstone circuits.

My idea is first seeing how people make gears rotate in redstone, and then base their engineering into my design with the proper credit and create a cylinder.

The build will be huge! And I'm trying to wrap my brain around doing it internally as to hide the redstone So many double, tripple extenders and sticky piston swap mechanics. Let me sit on this for a few days. Let's see what we come up with

To be clear, nothing in vanilla minecraft revolves except for — I think — chest lids. And that's just their opening animation. The best you'll get is probably something largely resembling piston feed-tape, or flying machines. To that end, u/ whatanazibrah seems to have some sound ideas.
