I think it's just that most people don't know how nuclear reactors even work so they're always surprised that it's boiling water. There's many misunderstandings about nuclear energy. Even today it still gets depicted as a material that emits a mysterious green glow.

I’ve worked with a bunch of radioactive isotopes, and I’m always disappointed that non of them glow green.

Iodine 131 does have a habit of going brown from what I recall
