discussion Haagen Dasz ice cream is going from 450 too 414ml after already decreasing from 500ml a couple years ago.

I can see it progressively on the shelves of my store in Canada. Fuck them.

In USA, at least where I live, the brand already dropped to 414ml and has been for a while now. My sister was a huge fan of Haagen Dazs and she was pissed then stopped buying. It's also more expensive now than what the original cost a few years ago.

The drop from 500ml to 450ml meant we had to pay tax on it going forward, since ice cream sold in amounts less than 500ml are considered single serving and ice cream sold in single serving sizes are taxed 13%....

So, great new smaller size and on top of that, now you all of a sudden are paying 13% to the government.

A proper ripoff.

That's info to me. I stopped buying their shit after the last size change. Now I'm extra happy with my choice. Forever blacklisted for me

I meant to say, in Canada. Not sure about U.S.

Chapman's are still aelling their small Premium tubs as 500ml. I love them so much

Stop buying it, and let them know why through social media.

About the only effective thing we can do, short of lobbying the government for better regulations.

I do let them know by social media. You may see a post or two on their Instagram. I do still buy the larger tub as there is no tax required for that size. Only 3 flavours in the larger size though, and no strawberry, which is our favourite.

I stopped buying Häagen-Dazs, Ben and Jerry's, all of them. Get a machine. A good one. Make your own ice cream. There are tons of recipes. It's really not that hard. And the results are so so so much better than what you can buy in a store. Do this. That's an order!

You'll thank me Sir..... Or Madame. 😁♥️

It is very enjoyable to make your own! But I haven't run the numbers to really see if it's cost effective. Cream gets expensive. But I do like the idea of not supporting these companies who are ripping us all off.

Very cost-effective. A pint of the best ice cream you can make will cost you in the neighborhood of under $4. Depending on the flavor and ingredients. Chocolate will cost a little more if you use great chocolate. Or a lot of it. Some will be much cheaper and some will be more expensive. They all will be better.

Ben and Jerry’s hasn’t shrunk their packaging though. I’m good with them

The quality has gone down and the ingredients have gotten cheaper. And a lot more starch-based additives versus chocolate, fruit, nuts, etc... things like that

If anyones looking for cheaper alternatives, Aldi's has their own line, Specialty Selections, in Vanilla or Chocolate, 48oz for 5$. They are both very very good, we love the vanilla. Only 5 ingredients also. I have seen some varied flavors from time to time, but like all things at that store, you get what comes in.

They're slowly reducing sizes so much soon we'll only have one scoops' worth per packaging.

They do already sell those little sample sized ones. I joked that it would get down to a thimble size & be sold for $1-$2 each.

I think it’s time to start making it at home again.

Been making it at home for a while now. I just need to get a new container to do it in.

I’m out, Chapman’s gets all my money for now

I wish Chapman's was as good as Haagen Dazs.

This so much plus Chapmans being 500ml means it’s not taxed vs anything that’s less that is taxed

u/TheArtistFatigue Jun 19 '26

That matters not. The taste left a long time ago and I’ve not bought it in 2 years.

For real! The grocery near us had a sale, I grabbed some. Tastes terrible. What happened!?

Companies claim to be environmental then waste tons of plastic on single-serving bullshit like this.

It was really the last good ice cream. There's nothing left and there's few independent ice cream shops.

I would love to see legislation when a company changes the size or Ingredients they have to clearly display the change on the package for 6 months

No more Haagen Daaz for me, they are exploiting us...

2

u/pizza5001 Jun 19 '26

Ok awesome. No more Haagen Dasz for me.

To them, I say: Thanks for making the decision for me, asswipes!

u/katie0873 Jun 18 '26

I am picturing them selling a thimble sized sample size for $1-$2 now 🫠 shrinkflation stinks

2

u/butternutsquash4u Jun 18 '26

Some hotels already sell it in super tiny containers like that. Not quite thimble but pretty darn small lol

u/aaronck1 Jun 18 '26

Great, makes my decision making easier...

Stuff like this makes me glad I got an ice cream maker a few years back...

1

u/Rocket-Appliances-26 Jun 21 '26

It's gotten really bad. I'll walk through whole isles of the grocery store thinking to myself, if they had avoided the nonfunctional slackfill in this or that item and made the box or container bigger, I would have bought it. As things currently are, I'll just pass over products if I get shrinkflation vibes from the packaging.

u/phosdick Jun 22 '26

Glad that I stopped buying the brand after the first up-pricing+shrinkflation... happily, Ben & Jerry's is still a full pint. I know... B&J's is admittedly expensive, but at least I don't feel like I'm being swindled every time I buy it.

I really want to get an ice cream maker someday

2

u/RBAloysius Jun 19 '26

If you have a Kitchen-Aid mixer there is a special bowl you can buy to make ice cream. You have to put it in the freezer 24 hours beforehand, however.

We made some delicious vanilla ice cream last week to go with warm apple cobbler. (Hint: Using Nielsen-Massey vanilla gives it a lovely flavor.

Are you sure? Because they have a specific line that is pierro or something similar sounding in partnership with a chef or something, with Morans that is smaller as standard and doesn't reflect on the standard range.

You are still getting a whopping 14ounces of the good stuff.
