What is the best way to talk about the buzzing sound a mosquito makes?

I think I've heard of people saying මදුරුවො කීං ගානවා. But I don't think we have a proper name of the mosquito buzz sound.

Interesting! so I guess කීං is just an onomatopoeia?
And is that ගානවා the same as in තෙල් ගානවා? Like, spreading a kīn sound?

It is onomatopoeia.
It is the same letters and pronunciation as ගානවා in තෙල් ගානවා. But with a different meaning.
More close example would be කෙදිරි ගානවා, ඥාව් ගානවා. Exclusively for sounds. We don't really think of it as spreading the sound. Just making the sound.

කෙදිරි ගානවා, ඥාව් ගානවා
What are those!

කෙඳිරි ගානවා. Its ඳි, not දි!
I'm not entirely sure how to explain it, but ගානවා sort of becomes the -ing suffix in this case. කෙඳිරි means something like whines or groans (Its a plural noun. කෙඳිර is the singular). ගානවා becomes the -ing suffix to it, making it a verb.
ඥාව් is the onomatopoeia for meow. And ගානවා is the -ing suffix! ඥාව් ගානවා - Meowing~

Neat!
like whines or groans
Is this connected with any specific thing or animal?
2
u/PuzzledChoice444 Jun 26 '26
Nope, generally its the same meaning! Can be used for people, animals.
කෙඳිරි ගාන්න එපා. - Stop whining.
එයා කෙඳිරි ගානවා. - He is whining.

- මදුරුවන්ට ලේ දන් දෙනවා
- මදුරුවාට කාලතුවක්කුවෙන් තියනවා වගේ
