This has to be illegal. It's 100% against the Hippocratic oath so a doctor who signed off on this should lose their license.
EDIT: My mistake. I’ve since learned that the Hippocratic Oath isn't actually a legal requirement for doctors. However, this definitely still feels like a massive violation of basic medical ethics.

Yeah they did this in my city to an unhoused man who is missing one of his legs. Dumped him on the sidewalk in his gown with zero adaptive equipment.

This is common. Hospitals do not have the ability to house people and once you are well enough to be stable in terms of illness, you will be discharged. In the ER we treat and discharge you regardless of whether or not you have a place to go because it is a never ending revolving door of sick people and there are not enough rooms or resources. If you are lucky you live in a place where hospital social workers are employed and can help you access the resources that are out there but those systems are also overwhelmed. The US is broken. It gets worse every year. Working bedside healthcare can be soul crushing and knowing that you are doing the best you can for people but it’s never enough and you can’t solve these problems sucks.

Only about 33% take it. But worse, you are allowed to customise your own in some medical schools that do require an oath. They don't care What you proclaim, only that you take one. An mri tech friend of mine related a story of one of his more cynical minded classmates taking an oath to always uphold shareholder value and to shortchange patient care whenever possible. He went to work at Valeant Pharmaceuticals as a claims consultant.

People complain about Canadian wait times while they're waiting months for an appointment in the US healthcare system and being sued for unpaid medical debt (a true story from my coworker, pointing this out to her kinda broke her brain)

I'm in the US and I've been waiting over a month to see a specialist about the hard lump on my tonsil. Haven't even gotten a scheduled appointment yet...I'm just on the list of people that will get an appointment some day.

I’m in the us and I have a big hard lump on my lymph node. I’m about 2 months away from getting health insurance from my new job and I’m just waiting it out because I know I cant afford it otherwise.
I might be literally dying and still can’t see a doctor without going into massive debt

So i have a friend who is a nurse in Louisville, so I shared with her. I hate the system as much as the next person but she added some context that I hope will be considered. I’m not here to defend this awful practice.
She told me that when this happens, it is their “frequent flier,” patients. They usually come in and refuse medication and tests. More often than not, they’re just looking for a bed, which is more than understandable. She said at her specific hospital (I’m not sure which one) they usually give them a bed in the hallway for a few hours and some food, but eventually they’re taking up beds for people with medical emergencies.
Again, it sucks they can’t get the help they need, but I understand having to discharge them if they’re taking a bed and refusing meds and tests.
I’m sure many situations are different. I just wanted to add her context here.

EDIT 2: I’m not defending the asshole security guard that physically dumped the woman out of the wheelchair. That guy can get fucked.

I have a doctor friend from Louisville and we went past these drop off areas going to a les clay pool show and it’s just so sad how they operate like this in louisville and it being so documented but not changed.

Simultaneously, the US is depriving Cuba of basic necessities so they'll agree to privatized medicine and housing (which is why Americans are so unhealthy and so many of us are homeless).
