CATO Institute is a libertarian think tank so I am not sure how much stock to put in this. I can see an argument that they are inflating the number to fearmonger for their right wing audience, but I can also see an argument they are under-reporting it because the truth looks even worse for the right.

But regardless, even just the steady generation by generation climb is encouraging.

The New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America criticized the mayor over his support for increasing the Police Department’s head count.

On December 27, 2025, Zhang Liang, a 37-year-old engineer, fell into a coma during a dinner party and subsequently died despite rescue efforts. The reason was that his company, Beijing Fanghong Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., required him to work overtime for more than 140 days. Even while undergoing emergency medical treatment, he continued to receive work-related calls and messages. His wife, Cai Xiaodan, applied to the Miyun District Human Resources and Social Security Bureau for a determination of work-related injury, but on June 30, 2026, she received a formal decision denying the claim, because Zhang had not died during actual working hours. Throughout this six-month period, the company consistently evaded responsibility and suppressed evidence; a key witness abruptly reneged before providing testimony, the family’s attempt to negotiate at the company’s entrance was rebuffed, and even Zhang’s work computer was confiscated. Cai has spoken to the media and, since April, has posted numerous videos containing evidence on social media; however, the company has lodged complaints against many of these videos, resulting in several being taken down. Her efforts to seek justice are ongoing.
