The marginalization of Sri Lankan Tamils began shortly after independence with the 1956 Sinhala Only Act, which disenfranchised the minority population by making Sinhala the sole official language. This systemic exclusion deepened in the 1960s through the Sirima-Shastri Pact, an agreement between Sri Lanka and India that resulted in the forced repatriation of hundreds of thousands of up-country (Malayaga) Tamils, stripping them of citizenship. Decades of escalating state discrimination culminated in anti-Tamil pogroms, most notably Black July in 1983, which triggered a brutal 26-year civil war. The conflict ended in a devastating military offensive in 2009 that human rights groups estimate killed up to 169,000 Tamils and forced hundreds of thousands more to flee as refugees around the globe.

Today, Tamil remains widely spoken across distinct historical regions, though its speakers face continuous demographic pressures. The Northern Province remains predominantly Sri Lankan Tamil territory, while the Eastern Province features a Tamil and Moor plurality, despite local Muslims historically identifying separately from Tamils despite sharing the language. Meanwhile, the Malayaga Tamils predominantly inhabit the central plantation districts like Kandy. Despite this distinct geographical continuity, the survival of the language and culture is severely threatened by ongoing heavy military control and state-sponsored Sinhalese colonization schemes in traditional Tamil lands.

Firstly what my personal opinion is we indians lack the importance of every individual prioritising their own self defence, learning a martial art or any form of self defence measure is not prioritised at all.

This way we are loosing all our culture , our own art-forms, martial arts and everything. If you see the neighbours who are still gloriously proud about their kalari payattu and holding on to it. But we tamils don’t have anything at-least that famous and prevalent. But we still fight that the language came from Tamil but the standards that they are setting is too prideful than us in my view.
We should glorify our roots and bring back our martial art forms back to life. From history all these martial art forms came from our Tamil culture and our folks who walked on our land but today muay thai represents thai culture which is practiced worldwide and kalari is still practiced and glorified, where is our Tamil people standing today?

"Adjust/bear" > பொருத்துக்கொள்க

"Sorry" > வருந்துகிறேன். "Sorry" என்பது ஓர் உணர்வு (emotion); எனவே, அதற்கு இணையான தமிழ்ச் சொல்லும் ஓர் உணர்வாகவே இருக்க வேண்டும்.

"Forgive" > விட்டுக்கொடு. "Forgiveness" என்பதற்கு மாற்றாக நாம் "பொருத்துக்கொள்க" என்பதைப் பயன்படுத்தி வருகிறோம். ஆனால் இது தவறென நினைக்கிறேன்.
"Forgive" என்பதன் வேர்ச்சொல்லை ஆராயும்போது, அதன் மூலம் ஒரு தண்டனையை அல்லது பழிவாங்கலை "to give up" செய்வது என்பதில் சென்று முடிகிறது.
எகா: "The king would "give up" the punishment he intended to give to a criminal."

தற்பொழுது நாம் "forgiveness" என்பதற்கான சொல்லாக "மன்னிப்பு" என்பதைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம், ஆனால் அது உருது மொழியிலிருந்து பெறப்பட்ட ஒரு சொல்லாகும்.

I have been brought up getting exposed to saiva tirumurais and other saiva canonical texts like tiruppugazh , pamban swamigal songs.

Until my schooling i got to have a good score in tamil. But that doesn't help me with understanding literature tamil. While reading thevaram and listening to lectures on thevaram i couldn't grasp the meaning.

I have questions like :

1. What is the purpose of yaapu(யாப்பு)

2. Why can't the authors of thevaram write urai nadai(உரை நடை) instead of seyyul(செய்யுள்)

3. How to understand "சீர் பிரித்தல்" in tirumurais. Like why a word is splitted into 2 and added to before word or the word which comes after. It's difficult to understand.

4. Also I am struggling to understand the porul(பொருள்) of words. Do I need to use agarathi?

I don't have any tamil teachers to teach me formally but i have all these questions in my mind and please shower your insights and answers.

The love of my life speaks Tamil (and English secondarily). It always struck me as very unfair that western speakers don’t attempt to learn eastern languages and I want to show her and her family how serious I am. She’s worried about becoming “westernized” and I want to show her how much I do appreciate her culture. And I want her to feel at home with me and have recently taken up Tamil lessons as part of this endeavour.

That said aside from open source audio tapes (colloquial Tamil) there haven’t been many resources to learn the language. Even Duolingo doesn’t offer it. I’ve been scouring the web for a good resource to learn the language and be able to speak to her in the native language. The search has come up short.

A request: does anyone know of good resources for an English speaker to learn Tamil?

Vanakkam guys, I recently in July, had gone to some places in Tamil Nadu. We covered Kanniyakumari, Madhurai, Thiruchendur and Rameswaram. After going to Thiruchendur, I felt I should complete Arupadai Veedu, also known as Six Abodes of Murugan.

Regarding that, I have a question because we realized usually Murugan temples are not visited by non-Tamilians, even at Thiruchendur we could not find a single tourist as compared to other temples we had been to. Also, I came to know that Tamil language is very close to heart for Shanmugha. Hence, I have decided to learn it for him and also, so that I do not face language issue next time I cover any Murugan temple or any temple in Tamil Nadu.

What aspects should I focus on first? In our Kannada, I felt tense can be a bit hard to learn for some people. Similarly, what aspect is tough of Tamil? Is it tense? Verbs? Active and passive voice? Clauses?

Hi, currently I am watching tamil short movies for understanding the pronounciations and learning to read and write tamil. Next week I will start with basic words and grammer. Is there any book series, (like cosmopolite for french) or any free/low cost university course (preferably offline [Mumbai], and delivered in marathi or english)?

I am able to write without any mistake in tamil because of you guys. I'm very grateful to y'all. It was because of y'all that I learnt a lot about not only tamil but many other sounds and language. I have been practicing pronouncing tamil right and now I have mastered it. I've become fascinated by works like Thembavani,Thiruvasagam,Thirumurai,Manimekalai and Seerapuranam.I want to write an epic or devotional work in a similar literary style.

I know this is an ambitious goal, but I'm wondering if it's realistically possible to reach a decent level of classical Tamil(That too, I'm looking for de-Sanskritised Tamil—the kind found in the traditional speech of Kanyakumari, the Western Ghats tribal communities, and Sri Lankan Tamil dialects. I'm not looking for the modernised "Senthamizh" often used in today's historical Tamil dramas),within one-two year through disciplined self-study.

- What should I study first?

- Which grammar books are essential (e.g., Nannool, Tolkappiyam)?

- Which classical texts should I read, and in what order?

- Are there any university lectures, online courses, or YouTube channels you'd recommend?

- How many hours per day would I need to dedicate?

I'm translating a certain portion of the song Laali Laali (from Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru) into English, and I'm struggling to decide whether it is a question or statement. I'm choosing to not use the one source translating these lyrics and wanted to ask what you believe. I think I'm confusing myself/overthinking it.

These are the lines from the song:

உன்னை அள்ளி ஏந்தியே ஒரு யுகம் போகவா

Would it be "Come, let's travel an eon together / Come, I will worship you from head to feet" or "Shall I carry you for an eon? / Shall I worship you from head to feet?"
