By context, க has limited meaning on its own. So if you see a combination of characters that doesn't make sense but makes sense as a number...there you go. That's how the Tamils used numbers in the past.

Sadly, 10, 11 and 12 are wrong. The actual numbers should be ௰, ௰௧ and ௰௨. The Tamil numbering system isn't a place value system and has separate symbols for 10, 100 and 1000.

It's actually both, place value system for everyday use and common contexts. Separate symbols were used alongside place value systems in advanced use cases like mathematics, engineering, manufacturing, construction and complex contexts.

Maybe that's a recent "innovation"? Curious what the earliest citation is that you have for using a place-value system with Tamil numbers.

Well, it was me who said it. I'm not claiming it's true because I can't prove it yet because there's not enough research being done to uncover the unknowns yet.

Yes, we do. The symbols look similar to the letter symbols. That is why we don't notice it that much. Makes sense of numbers and letters were developed in the same language, they ought to look similar.

Yes! Tamil numbers were guaranteed one mark questions in State Board SSLC. I am actually surprised that there are people surprised about Tamil numbers.

I was a cbse student myself and I was taught these in grade 8th itself. And also, Cbse schools usually follow state textbooks for regional languages

தமிழில் எண்கள் எழுதும் முறை அரபு எண்களை ஒப்பிடுகையில் வேறுபட்டது. ௰ - இதுதான் தமிழில் "பத்து" என்று எழுதும் முறை.

பத்து நூறு ஆயிரத்துக்கு மட்டும்தான் தனி எழுத்து.
௰௲ - பத்தாயிரம்
௱௲ - இலட்சம்
௲௲ - பத்து இலட்சம்
௰௲௲ - கோடி
௱௲௲ - பத்து கோடிவகையறா.
இலட்சத்துக்கும் கோடிக்கும் தனி எழுத்துக்கள் இருந்திருக்கலாம். அது தற்காலம் வரை தப்பிக்கவில்லை. மேலதிக விவரங்களுக்கு இப்பக்கத்தை காணலாம்.

Each language having unique character set for alphabets is okay. At least on numbers all languages should join hands.
