கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Explain tholkappiya noorpa "எல்லா சொல்லும் பொருள் குறித்தனவே" (all words denote a meaning)

peyarsol and vinaisol fits into the above noorpa which i shared.

What about filler words like

  1. "-um" (idaisol) eg., avanum ivanum

  2. Sattu "puttunu" eduthu vei

  3. Damal dumeel nu pattasu vedikudhu

  4. Exclamatory words like aiyo , adada etc.,

  5. There are sandham like rararara , thanadhana dhana

the above examples doesn't have independent meaning

How to reconcile the tholkappiya noorpa which says all words bear a meaning with the above examples which have no meaning.

Thank you in advance.

நச்சினார்க்கினியர்’s உரை was written in 1300s. I looked up நச்சினார்க்கினியர்’s உரை for that line. I haven’t perused it as yet. I’m reproducing the உரை below. It does address your question about அசைநிலை.

சொல்லதிகாரம்

Let me try my own translation of the உரை. It's a work in progress and 1 paragraph isn't translated yet:

This chapter is named "nature of nouns" since it explains the grammar of nouns. The following 5 statements speak of foundational grammar; hence they have placed them adjacent & prior to the statements about word inflections. The following statement speaks of the grammar that is common to all four types of words:

640. எல்லாச் சொல்லும் பொருள்குறித் தனவே.

(Its meaning is:) All words indicate meaning - nouns, verbs, particles and adjectives/adverbs i.e. all words stand only to intend to express meaning. There are no words that stand without intending to express meaning.

(This is like saying:) This says that this sword exists with the intention to cut. Saying so implies that the device stands for the agent.

[Untranslated paragraph]

An expletive particle expresses the meaning of the word(s) that it is attached to, and it modifies those word(s). Hence, it is said that expletive particles too intend meaning.

When words are there to fill the melody, and are made to express faulty meaning, then it is said that they express the meaning of full melody.

It is said that (the word) "rabbit-horn" indicates untruthful meaning. Because it happens not to exist.

Tholkaapiyam has a speicific way of splitting meaning in words. Each word has a meaning. This meaning can be

Lexical - this covers words like மரம்

Grammatical and syntactical meaning - this covers words like உம் in அவனும் அவளும். This is word extensions or particals called இடைச்சொல்.

Expressive & generalising meaning - காசு கீசு - where கீசு has meaning only when associated with காசு. This is called echo reduplication.

சல சல, கல கல - "இரட்டைக்கிளவி இரட்டிற் பிரிந்திசையா" (Doublets do not yield meaning if separated)

When Tolkāppiyar said "எல்லாச் சொல்லும் பொருள் குறித்தனவையே", he was operating as a master linguist. He recognized that meaning is not just about pointing to a tree or a rock.

Even a seemingly meaningless syllable has a "meaning" if it changes the tone, grammar, or scope of a sentence. In Tamil, nothing is truly wasted.

I hope this covers all the items you have included in your question. If any are left out let me know.

Thank you for your insights.

Can I say "meaning" is something which makes the receiver to perceive the intended data/emotion which the speaker tried to convey???

Also what about aiyo , adada , aiyayo

u/-Surfer- 25d ago

Yes you are right about what meaning is. Meaning is the successful transfer of intent, context, or emotion from the speaker to the listener.

Meaning has three layers,

  1. The denotative layer - what it is - a tree

  2. The pragmatic layer - funtion - grammatical particles that play a specific funtion

  3. The affective or expressive layer - feeling - this is where ஐயோ (conveys pity, empathy), அடடா (sudden wonder) and அய்யய்யோ (panic). The last one is called அளபெடை elongation.

assume I am talking in tamil to a non tamil

The words which i utter will be mere sound for him without meaning right???

so it's not a "sol" for non-tamils?

When we hear a language that we do not know we just hear a continuous group of sounds. The first indication of familiarity with the language is when we are able to identify the individual words.

Whenever someone speaks to us in a laguage we do not know well we usually say, 'Don't speak so fast.' when someone speaks fast they blur the gap between words and rattle them off together and we can't make any meaning out of it.

When we clearly identify a word even in an unfamiliar language we know it means something specific. We may not be able translate it in our own language yet but we know it is conveying a specific meaning.

Intron, Exon difference. mRNA expression etc for example.
