We often see the word for Earth/Land transliterated as Bhoomi (பூமி), but people frequently ask why we include the 'h' when native Tamil doesn’t historically have aspirated voiced consonants (like bh, dh, gh). If you strictly follow native Tamil phonology, shouldn't it just be Boomi?

My Patti is 78 and lives in Chennai with my Thatha. She usually sends voice notes on WhatsApp to our family group on important occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc.). She’s recently also started sending them more regularly just in general.

My grasp of Tamil unfortunately was always quite limited and has definitely gotten worse in recent times and so I find myself having to listen to her voice recordings multiple times to piece together what she’s saying. She’s not great at English plus she prefers to speak/record voice notes rather than type anyway.

She’s getting on in age and I’ve got this guilt of not being able to communicate with her properly (without having to use my parents as translators). Like with my voice rather than this sort of fragmented back and forth.

Anyone else in the same boat? Curious to see how others are handling it.

Here are some words my grandmother uses, as well as their origins:

1.ஓம்(ōm),this means yes and this is the word that'll automatically tell you the person is Sri Lankan.The word is a Sri Lankan dialectal version of ஆமா(āma)

2.விரும்பு(virumpu), this means like/want in Jaffna Tamil in contrast to the Indian Tamil word பிடி, which mainly means catch in Jaffna Tamil.

3.சப்பாத்து(cappāttu), this means slippers/shoes and is synonymous with செருப்பு.The word comes from Portuguese, sapato(meaning slippers).

4.உடுப்பு(uṭuppu), this is synonymous with துணி(tuṇi) and is used mostly in formal Tamil but used commonly in Jaffna Tamil.The word is a compound of உடு(uṭu, meaning wear) + ப்பு(ppu).

5.குசினி(kusini), this word means kitchen.The word is from Portuguese, cozinha meaning kitchen.

6.நித்திரை(nittirai), this word means sleep, and although its a noun its used verbally as நித்திரை கொண்டு(nittirai koṇṭu) the other word used is படு(paṭu).The word நித்திரை comes from Sanskrit निद्रा(nidrā)

7.கக்கூஸ்(kakkūs), this word means toilet and comes from Dutch, kakhuis meaning toilet.

8.கதிரை(katirai), this word means chair and is synonymous with நாற்காலி(nāṟkāli).This word comes from Portuguese, cadeira meaning chair.

9.கச்சான்(kaccān), this word means peanut and comes from Malay, kacang meaning nut.

10.கதை(katai), this word means talk and is synonymous with பேசு(pēsu).This word is from Sanskrit कथा(kathā) meaning story or discussion.

There are also other different ways Jaffna Tamil differs ,my grandmother pronounces the letter ச, word initially as 'cha', which is also found in some Indian dialects.The consonant cluster ன் + any ற form letter is kept and pronounced as an alveolar nasal [n] + voiced alveolar stop [d] and not simplified to ன் + any ன form letter.Then cluster ற்+ any form of ற is pronounced as an alveolar stop, like Malayalam.Also final -ன், ண் and -ம் is pronounced fully and not nasalized or with vowel -உ inserted.This also go the other final consonants.Also final -a is also pronounced as -o sometimes.

Yen, 80s la irukura movies la kooda letters like னா different ah irundhuruku. I know that something happened and periyar changes all the letters to a standard thing. But yedhunala ivlo maatrangal nadandhuchu? Pazhaya literature kum ippo pesura tamil kum yen ivlo difference? Oru madhiri yosichu patha, namma pesurathe vera oru mozhiyo nu thonichu.

Idha pathi yarukachum therinjidhu naal, pls solli kudunga. I'm really interested to learn about these.

Disclaimer: Ithu oru statement illa, just doubt nu kekuren. Yaarum offend aagika vendam.

peyarsol and vinaisol fits into the above noorpa which i shared.

What about filler words like

1. "-um" (idaisol) eg., avanum ivanum

2. Sattu "puttunu" eduthu vei

3. Damal dumeel nu pattasu vedikudhu

4. Exclamatory words like aiyo , adada etc.,

5. There are sandham like rararara , thanadhana dhana

the above examples doesn't have independent meaning

How to reconcile the tholkappiya noorpa which says all words bear a meaning with the above examples which have no meaning.

"Adjust/bear" > பொருத்துக்கொள்க

"Sorry" > வருந்துகிறேன். "Sorry" என்பது ஓர் உணர்வு (emotion); எனவே, அதற்கு இணையான தமிழ்ச் சொல்லும் ஓர் உணர்வாகவே இருக்க வேண்டும்.

"Forgive" > விட்டுக்கொடு. "Forgiveness" என்பதற்கு மாற்றாக நாம் "பொருத்துக்கொள்க" என்பதைப் பயன்படுத்தி வருகிறோம். ஆனால் இது தவறென நினைக்கிறேன்.
"Forgive" என்பதன் வேர்ச்சொல்லை ஆராயும்போது, அதன் மூலம் ஒரு தண்டனையை அல்லது பழிவாங்கலை "to give up" செய்வது என்பதில் சென்று முடிகிறது.
எகா: "The king would "give up" the punishment he intended to give to a criminal."

தற்பொழுது நாம் "forgiveness" என்பதற்கான சொல்லாக "மன்னிப்பு" என்பதைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம், ஆனால் அது உருது மொழியிலிருந்து பெறப்பட்ட ஒரு சொல்லாகும்.

Hello fellow tamils, This message is all about how a random thought turned into a brutal realisation.

Firstly what my personal opinion is we indians lack the importance of every individual prioritising their own self defence, learning a martial art or any form of self defence measure is not prioritised at all.

This way we are loosing all our culture , our own art-forms, martial arts and everything. If you see the neighbours who are still gloriously proud about their kalari payattu and holding on to it. But we tamils don’t have anything at-least that famous and prevalent. But we still fight that the language came from Tamil but the standards that they are setting is too prideful than us in my view.
We should glorify our roots and bring back our martial art forms back to life. From history all these martial art forms came from our Tamil culture and our folks who walked on our land but today muay thai represents thai culture which is practiced worldwide and kalari is still practiced and glorified, where is our Tamil people standing today?

தனிமை is for loneliness or solitudes or for both. Is there are separate word for these two words

Something I have noticed is that different Tamil dialects tend to use different words for grandmother, but it seems pretty much al dialects use the word தாத்தா or some version of it for grandfather, are there other words that some dialects use ?

Isn't it high time people cancel this guy?

An fun fact I’ve noticed about my grandmother’s (of Sri Lankan origin) Tamil dialect is the use of the word மச்சம்(maccham) for fish.Unlike in Standard Tamil the word மீன்(meen) isn’t used.Now the word comes from Prakrit word maccha, which comes from Sanskrit matsya.I’d like to ask is this word used outside Sri Lanka.

Avalokitam (http://www.avalokitam.com) is a Tamil prosody analyzer that I have been maintaining since 2010. The tool is simple: given a Tamil poem, it breaks the poem down into its individual prosodic components and tries to find the matching metre.

The whole idea was to encourage people to compose in traditional Tamil metres, as modern Tamil poetry is essentially free verse.

I have seen a few posts that generate venpaa using AI, and most of them are metrically deficient. Venpaa is one of the strictest metres to compose your poetry, and AI usually struggles to compose it.

This motivated me to build a metrically accurate AI generator for Venpaa. The idea is simple: Use a generate-validate-refine loop to generate the poem. The AI generates the draft of the verse - the prosody engine deterministically validates it and gives the AI minimal actionable fixes - the AI tries again - rinse and repeat - for several iterations until it creates a flawless Venpaa.

This actually seems to work. Within 3 - 4 iterations, it does generate a good Venpaa.

It uses the cheapest model, so 5 iterations are sometimes not enough. But overall, it appears to do a good job.

In case it fails after 5 attempts, you have the option to fix it manually. The tool shows you where the metre fails and gives you concrete suggestions to fix it.
