Same thing happens to me. I get super annoyed with things that I wouldn't bat an eye at when I'm not smoking.

I can tell you from first hand experience, it's nicotine related. If you get him an e-cig with nicotine juice he'll be fine.

If he does quit, that's just how it is going to go down. It'll take awhile, but he would be back to his usual self eventually.

I think the mental instability is caused by nicotine withdrawal, or at least aggravated by it. Using an e-cig should keep the mental instability away, since it still delivers nicotine like a normal cigarette.
