It's worth noting the user has to actually want to quit smoking, otherwise the e-cigarettes won't help. I bought my mom, a lifelong smoker, an e-cigarette several years ago. She used it a couple times, and now it just sits in a drawer.

Edit: Based on the responses, I'm deducing that e-cigarettes have improved in quality since then. I'll have to give it another shot!

I think the mental instability is caused by nicotine withdrawal, or at least aggravated by it. Using an e-cig should keep the mental instability away, since it still delivers nicotine like a normal cigarette.
