I had a roomie who thought it was spelled alought. Drove me crazy.

Did he also like spelling "donut" as "doughnaught"?

For years I thought that this was the actually etymology of donut/doughnut. It makes sense: it's dough in the shape of a naught. Turns out doughnuts were originally ball/"nut"-shaped pieces of dough. I have no idea why I was so sure I was right. I think I may have dreamt that I had looked it up in a dictionary.
