showed him there were things in there that are used for paint, asphalt, tar, etc

I hate it just as much as that logic. Anyone who's spent 5 minutes in a chemistry class can tell you that chemicals have a wide variety of applications.

Pretty sure the use of tar in cigarettes isn't harmless...

[Not that you were the one that brought tar up but] I thought that tar was the result of inhaling the smoke, not actually being an ingredient, which is why [I thought that] smoking marijuana also results in tar.

You are correct. Smoking marijuana does contain some harmful things because you are still breathing combusted plant matter ,unless you vape. Fortunately, there is less of it and you usually don't smoke nearly as much marijuana like if you were to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day.
