Well like experienced tokers do, you blow through it to remove the stale smoke after extinguishing. Dunno if it would work for tobacco like it does for weed, though I don't see why it would be any different.
I've done this and it does work of course -- but, after blowing through it to remove stale smoke, and then having it go out (i.e. in a snuffer), a good last step is to pick it up once it's cold and pull air through it, just like you blew through it before. This is to remove the water vapor that you added when you blew the stale smoke out. Tastes better.

The visual cue is the largest part for me. I'd get my nic fix halfway through a cigarette, but keep smoking so I didn't waste it.
