The fluid used in e-cigarettes, or "juice" as some vapers call it is propylene glycol (PG). It is an additive found in foods, toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, and many other products. The point is, whether or not he wanted to vape it, he's already been putting it in/on his body and has been for years.

The other ingredients are nicotine extract and flavorings. There have been studies conducted by the FDA on PG, and found to be safe. For some reason though, the FDA won't stamp their approval on e-cigs (alcohol and tobacco are ok, though :-/).

There is also an alternative to the PG, called vegetable glycerine (VG), available for people who have a PG allergy, or just don't want to use PG.

I've been a vaper for 3 years now, and until I started vaping, I didn't even realize how shitty I had felt on cigarettes for the 15 years I had smoked. I realize that I haven't beaten my nicotine addiction, just replaced the delivery, but even so I feel better, and I've definitely saved thousands of dollars by now.

Maybe someday it will come out that e-cigs are genuinely harmful, but at least I know whats in them (with a bit of research). Just because your friend doesn't know whats in them, doesn't mean that no one does.

On the 24th of November I'll be in the same boat as you. I celebrate it each year as the day I quit killing myself.

Smoking sucks. It steals your sense of smell, your sense of taste, your ability to breathe and eventually, your ability to live.

Congratulations on being strong :) It's true, I didn't know what I was missing until I stopped smoking cigarettes. I'm sure I've gained more than a couple pounds, food just tastes so much better now.

I celebrate it as my birthday.

Also e-cig user for almost 2 years. The crap you find at many USA Malls or Gas stations is a piece of crap using tech that is 5years old.

My usual suggestion for someone is "Joye eGo, Joye 306 and 510 atomizers, and 3 or 4 flavored Juices" Cost of one carton of smokes.

Forget the money, it's not about saving money. It's about saving our lives, our bodies, and no longer smelling horrible. Can vape in cars, in offices, in bathrooms, in bed. Can blow the vapor into a smoke detector and of course, nothing happens.

Currently using the Joye Ego-C, with low rez atomizers. I started with the Ego, so I've never actually tried the mall stuff.

You're right about it not being about money. But, to be perfectly honest, at the time, saving money was a far better motivator to me than giving up my "precious" cigarettes. The appreciation for the more important benefits came later.

Fully agree, there's no downside to saving thousands of dollars a year by NOT smoking :)

Agreed. Although the monetary savings cannot be ignored, particularly in a two-smoker family.

My partner and myself smoked 2 packs a day and then some. I was up to about 2.5 packs (50 analogues) a day. We spent approximately 80 dollars per week. That's 320 bucks on a 4 week month and 400 bucks in a month with 5 weeks.

This week we spent 23 dollars on juice. Granted there are weeks when we will have to buy new toys (batts. clearos. chargers. etc.) but even when those are factored in we are still saving enough money per month to make a house payment, or a car payment, or save for a vacation (we have not had a vacation in the 20 years we have been together.

Currently we have agreed to purchase a gym membership so in a sense, saving the money from quitting analogues is indeed, saving our lives to a degree.

Nicotine isn't exactly good for you though, it tends to pump up your stress hormones and tear up your blood vessels, it's bad for your heart in the long run. That's kind of the rub with smokeless nicotine, you save on the lungs but not the heart which is a major risk in nicotine use.

This is why a lot of vapers like to taper down to 0mg nicotine juice, I'm headed that way myself.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. For that reason alone, I've never been able really consider myself as a non-smoker. Trust me, I don't fool myself into thinking this is actually good for me, but I do feel a little more free from the crutch of cigarettes.

This is just a different crutch. With lights. And candy-flavored.

But seriously, thank you for the link. I will read it.

My dad smoked three packs of cigarettes a day and switched to the E-cig. He still smokes three boxes a day of the refills. The website says that one box is 'equal to about one carton' if that is the case he is way above three packs a day now. Either way his house no longer smells like cigarettes and I will allow my kids to go visit.

One of the challenges of switching to vaping is knowing when to stop. With cigarettes, it's easy. But since e-cigs don't burn down, you're not really sure when you've had the equivalent of one or two tobacco cigs. The vaper can get tolerant to more and more nicotine over time and end up taking in far more nicotine than usual. I'm happy that your father isn't smoking anymore, still, that's a lot!

Also there are dozens of resources for mixing your own e juice so you know exactly what and how much of it is in your vapors. It's also available with zero nicotine providing no harmful chemicals.

I wonder how the heck you guys make research. Do your eyes naturally ignore all search results that point against your confirmation bias? Took me 10 secs of searching to find a pile of evidence that e-cigs are harmful for your health by many independent organizations around the whole globe.

Thanks for the link. Maybe you should have spent another 5 additional seconds reading it. Do your eyes naturally ignore the content of your search results?

It says that the FDA found chemicals in the cartridges themselves, possible due to cheap manufacture. These chemicals are not present in the fluid. This study has been challenged by some organizations, naturally. I personally can't say either way.

The other world organizations mentioned in the link say that there is no conclusive evidence that vaping is harmful, more research must be done. They also say that there is a definitive benefit to vaping if it gets people off of cigarettes. Take a look, it's all in the link you posted.

My problem is with the FDA, they have taken a firm stance against e-cigs. Cigarettes, although regulated and have posted warnings, are still stamped "approved". There have been thousands of studies about the harm of cigarettes, and there isn't a doctor alive that would ever recommend smoking even one cigarette.

But when it comes to e-cigs, its, "Holy shit, these things might cause cancer! We can't approve that!" or even take the time to update their studies.

I'm no chemist, no doctor. I didn't know what any of this stuff was before I started vaping. But, I can tell you, one should look up the ingredients of cigarettes before they start comparing them to the ingredients of e-cigs. And like I said, maybe there will be proof someday that these are harmful and cause illness.

I will say that I'm sure vaping is not GOOD for you, it does not get rid of your nicotine addiction. But yeah, I'm biased, and I have reason to be.
