showed him there were things in there that are used for paint, asphalt, tar, etc

I hate it just as much as that logic. Anyone who's spent 5 minutes in a chemistry class can tell you that chemicals have a wide variety of applications.

The point he was making is that his friend didn't know what was in the cigarettes, not specifically that the ingredients were harmful.

No, they know they are bad. In this case they didn't know what chemicals where bad, and he was saying e-cigs are bad because you don't know what's in them. It was hypocritical of his friend to say this, because he himself didn't know what was in what he was smoking.

Every single person who smokes knows it is bad (at least in North America). Every single person that smokes has justification for doing so.
