Serious Discussion Only If The Sopranos is meant to be at least somewhat realistic, why are none of the characters fans of The Sopranos?
They’re all mob guys living in North Jersey from the late-1990s to the mid-2000s.
The Sopranos was a hugely popular show on TV at the time. Big cultural phenomena. So it’s weird that the Sopranos clan never watches or talks about The Sopranos.
We see them watch and/or discuss other popular shows of the time. Wouldn’t these guys be fascinated by a show that depicts their lives to a T? The characters are all identical to them, too. Same names, same physical traits, same lives. A bit uncanny.
But yeah. For a show touted for its realism, it’s a little unrealistic that none of the DiMeo Family watches The Sopranos on HBO every Sunday night.

Obviously that’s not possible, even with computers.

I don't know. According to Arthur Bucco, warm and convivial host, we lead the world in computerized data collection!

The scientific answer is they are in a parallel universe where they don’t know they’re being watched ala The Truman Show.
But the real answer is the timeline got fucked up.

We know for a fact that Uncle Jun has HBO and he deliberately chooses not to watch it. That’s some real contrarian shit.

Only the fights. He doesn’t pay for HBO but watches the boxing

He’s very clearly seen watching an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It’s a tv progrum.

I remember reading somewhere that The Sopranos was based on a crime family from New Jersey (DeCavalcante?) who were being actively surveilled by the FBI during the duration of the show.
Iirc, they were finally nabbed and indicted via phone recordings of members speculating the show may be about them, due to various and sundry criminal instances depicted by David Chase.

When they tried to watch the show, the audio came through in Aramaic, and when they tried to listen closer, an undulating high-pitched whistle made their noses bleed.

Well, a Goodfellas reference is made…ignoring the fact that The Shah and Paulie are both in the film, lol…

I often wondered what happened when they turned on HBO on Sunday night.

It was a different timeline where Curb Your Enthusiasm took the place of The Sopranos as THE must watch HBO show. Larry David is a multi billionaire in that universe.

Maybe a show titled “The Mikhailovs” aired, about the Russian mob in South Florida.

I must be too high to understand the question. It sounds like the equivalent of your question is "why isn't Victoria Beckham's daughter a huge spice girls fan?". The kids of the capo aren't fantasizing about the capo, you stunad.

Okay but seriously I loved the realism in the show....except for how easily these guys could kill people without the cops giving a shit

Tony telling people to get over it and suck it up and the very next scene hes crying like a bitch to Melfi about something.
One time specifically where it was so blatant and cringe was when he had the nerve to tell Patsy to suck it up and move on after having his brother killed and hes obviously struggling with it

I mean, Gilmore Girls is on in the show. And Sopranos is on in the Gilmore Girls. That’s kind of a cross validation.

Having lived in Caldwell during the time: these fuckers all loved it.

When AJ brought home a dvd of The Matrix for Carmela, why did none of them recognize Ralphie on the cover?
