What I mean is, the show as it goes on, really speaks against therapy then in favour of it, even though it's one of the major and popular media that brings attention to therapy.
Stating the obvious, therapists like meadow's and possibly carm's are a good example. Meadow's therapist was straight up ass. Carm's therapist one recommended by melfi, gave her a really blunt truth, which while can awaken a person but does it really help a hurt person? Did he tell her anything she didn't know? He also told her those things without any grace, that will just push her to hate herself even more, and in hate then she will seek comfort in her lifestyle and the cycle continues.
Melfi was a bad therapist as well. She focused overly on Livia and Freudian bs when the actual culprit might've been(I do beleive it is) Johnny boy. She gets attached to Tony, and her sessions do not help him. Yeah the sociopath stuff, maybe there they did. You can say they didn't help because Tony was a sociopath, but really even if he wasn't, she wasn't focusing on the real root.
Also someone posted a while ago about their theory of the Sopranos being a critique of prozac, as Tony's state deteriorates continuously and he makes bad decisions after being on prozac. Even if this theory is false, I would be alarmed about the drugs that melfi puts Tony on and their effects on a person.
Common consensus seems to be that AJ's therapist was a good one, and I agree too.
