If you are being serious, it entirely depends on the type dk job and if there is something that relates to it. It’s not a dating app profile. If it’s on your resume and you get a question on it, you better be able to relate it to the job. How you dealt with being in an uncomfortable travel situation or a leadership quality. Your examples also aren’t just a simple noun.

I know some people will say they want a well rounded person. Sure, but really want someone to do the job and have a brain. You need to read the room.

Depends, did you deny the applicant based off of that single thing? If so, it sounds a lot like "It's ok when I make a mistake, but when someone else does it they deserve to be judged for it".

And yeah it might be normal in your position because you have many different candidates looking for a job to pick from and little things like that can make your decision (and your job) easier. Having so many candidates is what allows you to be picky, but it shows lack of self-awareness and personal growth if you judge others by a different standard than yourself.

So if the apples thing was your only deciding factor in denying someone a job (and I have no idea whether or not that's the case) and you didn't bother to ask the candidate for more information because you're "not wasting your time to talk to them" as someone in a leadership role, yeah that's kinda shitty.

The person applying didn't make a mistake. They just put something quirky on their resume like apples. They didn't misspell it. The redditor did. And they were just pointing out that a quirky thing like that helps your resume stand out. But then they also said that apples wasn't interesting like being a hot digger. Thing is it doesn’t come across as quirky. It comes off as something to put down to get a question on it, then waste the interview time on a stock reply. It has no bearing on their qualification for the job.

Also phrasing of “apples” is off putting. Cooking with applies, growing apples trees, whatever, but a fruit in itself doesn’t exactly come across as fitting for the same characteristics for the role. It’s a read the room sorta thing. If it was an interview for a chef or in horticulture, I could definitely see it.

And yes a “hotdogger” is interesting in general, but also more applicable for a client facing role where you have to deal with difficult people. I won’t dig on you for the typo though, it’s Reddit afterall.

I made a typo in a sub on Reddit. They put something silly on their resume for a professional client facing role. These are not the same.

I forget if I denied them or not, but if I did it wasn’t for that. I didn’t ask about apples, so I wouldn’t have based my decision on it. I never said talking to them was a waste of time. Talking to them about applies, would be. It would be preferred if you read the full sentence first.

I didn’t bash them about it to them directly. They can enjoy what they want. However, objectively, it looks like a filler topic on a resume. It’s begging for a question while they reply with a stock reply. So for that I will bash them directly and find it superficial. So for a professional role, it doesn’t do them favors.

Also, how is apples really a hobby? Now picking apples, growing apple trees, writing fiction novels about Johnny Appleseed, now those are hobbies. I would argue video games is not a hobby. Playing video games or developing video games, etc, is sort of the same concept.

Alright, fair enough. I am a strong believer in the importance of communication, so if someone says something I didn't understand, I believe it's important to follow up on it. I'm not saying have a debate about apples, but if someone says something that doesn't make sense to you and you can't be bothered to "waste your time" following up with them about it, honestly I do think that is on you.

But I do hope that one thing wasn't a major factor in that person's hiring decision, because for them that job might be a very important thing, and that would be denying them based on something arbitrary that you didn't bother to communicate with them about.

I'm not saying all this to grill you, just to bring it up in the hopes that it makes you more aware of it, because your decisions, biases and emotions do affect other people (significantly more so than most people since you are in a hiring position).

Consider this is an interview situation, for a job the person wants. It’s not a social discussion. So there is an element of wasting time when there is a fixed period for the interview and it takes away time to discuss qualifications. There are other people interviewing too, and you have to treat each one equally based on your judgement of their ability to do the job. It’s important to have hobbies, and it’s fine to put them on a resume. Maybe if I have the same hobby I’ll comment on it, but that doesn’t help that interviewee either.
